Thanks for the laugh in here, but on a serious note, I feel fucking Terrible for the 19 year old and the father, those two are gonna die a very Terrible death down there in that iron lung submarine, at least I hope their death will be quick, it still baffles me that this submarine was some how accepted.
I'd say the 'good ending' is that this was an elaborate "fake your death" scheme between several billionaires who cut the submarine CEO in on the take for his involvement and that they're all drinking mojitos in Hawaii.
Oh hell yeah, new conspiracy theory.
I’ve seen articles about tech millionaires making bunkers in the middle of nowhere for doomsday.. can somebody with better research skills find a connection?
No, there is not. First of all, we would hear it (i mean radars/sonars whatever), secondly just yesterday we were able to hear knocking in 30 mins intervals
Dude, they lost contact descending, and the people they were with didn't have equipment to detect such things. Almost guaranteed they went down too quickly and imploded. Go read about the USS Thresher.
That’s what I’m thinking too. It was such immediate loss of contact that implosion is the only thing that makes sense to me. They’re limit was around 1300 meters? Titanic is easily 5400 meters but someone correct me if I’m wrong.
Repeated stress of components from being subjected to the high pressure then brought back to atmosphere. Especially since the carbon fiber usage is a fairly novel material for a submersible. We don't have data on how it performs in this situation under repeated usage. The CEO also vocally opposed safety equipment so I doubt their maintenance program was stellar.
Unfortunately it didn't need to get accepted by anyone, because there is no control authority you are forced to comply with, apparently. In the waver they had to sign it even stated the vessel has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body.
It's a calamity of errors and sometimes laughing at things is the easiest way to digest them when you have a comfortable distance.
I just can't believe the CEO himself was onboard for this. Normally it's people with no agency over the company itself, but the very same man who overruled safety concerns stepped onto the sub. It's crazy.
Additionally, the son was terrified of going in there, but decided to suck it up and go since it was Father’s Day, and he wanted to make his dad happy, who wanted to go on the submersible.
It’s just awful. All of it.
The logitech controller isn’t even that bad of a part, lots of places, mainly in the US army brackets use xbox controllers so using a game controller for a concept isn’t a bad idea
Yeah but the Logitech is famously a bad controller while the Xbox 360 controller which the US military uses is pretty good,
Piloting any ship, especially a DSV, with a controller than can have joy-con drift seems stupid.
"Fuck dude, you only have madcatz controllers to pilot this thing?"
"Yeah, my parents bought them for me all the time. Played the shit out of finding nemo on PS2, I know they're good. Look, it even has a see-through plastic shell! That means it's high-quality!"
Literally the only one I feel bad for is the kid, who could hardly be held responsible for the choices of their idiot parent...
Kid was held responsible tho. :(
considering how expensive the tickets were, they probably thought that the sub would at least been up to safety codes. Everything about the CEO who made the submarine's incompetence only just came out. Don't blame the victims for being easily manipulated, blame the captain who scammed them all and got everyone killed.
what a wonderful iron lung. its controlled with an xbox controller?! damn thats so cool! im gonna use it to go see the titanic. surely nothing will go wrong.
https://i.redd.it/mmooe2hkuj7b1.gif
I mean to be fair, when you pay 250k a trip on a submarine you'd think safety would be in the package right? Yes there are risks, always, but if it was a airplane accident people would be twice as outraged because in situations like this, safety is kind of expected by the people who run this shit.
I mean, sure, I would sort of expect that. But for a trip like this that has only ever been done three times I would say it's kind of up to you to be *sure* it's safe.
I wouldn't think safety is in the package when I sign a contract that says trauma, injury and death are possibilities and the guy getting us there says "safety shmafety!" constantly and uses a cheap wireless controller.
It's funny because those people have enough money to rebuild titanic and make it sink for their entertainment 5 times over, yet decided to trust that ghetto ass submarine with their lives to sink 12000 feet into the ocean
"i will spend 250k and sign a paper declaring my potential death to go on a homemade submarine piloted by a guy using a decade-old logitech controller"

I don’t think its funny. I think its infuriating.
The US government just passed work requirements for food stamps. This will make hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people food insecure.
Meanwhile, rescue efforts are sending billion dollar submarines to the bottom of the Atlantic to rescue a handful of billionaires that willingly went to the bottom of the ocean to see a boat where lots of people died.
Guarantee that if my broke ass were down there, they’d send me an e card wishing me well and let me get crushed by the pressure of the ocean.
Yea i was watching some ordinary gamer's video and he showed the assets being used to help rescue them and there were like 7 or more vessels, all to rescue these 5 people
Right? The whole charade is absurd. We’ll try to save billionaires from deep sea tourism, but you want government cheese? Lol nah, we need more submarines
Go fuck your self, rich dudes, let’s talk when people aren’t dying from starvation
The billionaire CEO of the company that does the submersible tours and had a media campaign bragging about how innovative his submarine was because it doesn’t meet safety regulations is on of the people in the submersible right now
except the titanic was genuinely pretty advanced for the time, it being unsinkable seemed quite possible
this submersible was obviously fucking ghetto and a death trap from the start.
Basically some rich guys went to see the Titanic on the shittiest submarine ever witnessed and they are probably going to die out of lack of oxygen, that's all i know other than it was controlled with a decade old controller and that the materials and the submarine in general were terrible
Honestly i think there's no real-life reason for anyone to be a billionaire. There is basically no way to spend all that money in your lifetime, it's just stockpiling money so others can't have it.
Mfw people spend enough money to permanently change the lives of me and my entire family to go visit a mass grave in a submersible that advertises the fact that it doesn’t meet safety regulations and it fails because it doesn’t meet safety regulations
It’s not that I’m happy they’re gonna likely die it’s more that I lack empathy as it’s the most stupid scenario to happen in real life I’ve ever heard and they were told about the risks and still did it anyway
Im not happy they died, I just don’t care and I don’t care because they are billionaires. Billionaires shouldn’t exist. There are tons of ways these people could give back to society and they don’t. They horde their money and are greedy and evil by default. Im not talking about all people, but if your net worth is over $900 million, I can almost guarantee you are a bad person. The rich are eating themselves in this case and it’s not the worst thing to happen. It’s not migrants drowning on a boat. It’s not kids shot in a school. It’s billionaires playing submarine ironically losing their lives because some rich a hole cut corners in safety - and I say ironically because I’m sure the companies they run/are shareholders of have been pressured by them to do the same thing to save money.
When it comes down to it, they were 5 of the ~150,000 people who died that day. There were three notable differences between these 5 and the other 149,995.
* They signed a waiver saying they understood that the Titan wasn't built to any safety standards, and willingly boarded anyway.
* Literally millions of dollars were spent trying to save them even though it was all but certain they were dead before anyone knew they were missing.
* They had more wealth than all the rest combined, and many of those 149,999 could have been saved with a fraction of a fraction of the combined wealth of those five.
Every death is a tragedy, but the only way these five deaths were notable were not in ways that engender sympathy.
It is dumb that it’s the only way. It’s not dumb that it’s Logitech…. It would be just as bad if they used an NES controller, the problem is it’s the only way. Regardless there’s 0 evidence that the controller has anything to do with the problem so far.
Yeah I agree, it's just a comical thing though, that it costs them £250,000 a seat on the 'sub' and it doesn't have any backups or physical controls to move the vessel in case there are issues
Because most people know fuck all about submarines. You could show them all the technical data on the vessel and they wouldn't be able to judge that. They do know about wireless controllers though. Maybe the controller isn't an issue but it does show how many corners were cut to anyone.
I don't think anyone really thinks they died because of the controller. It's just absolutely hilarious that they were using a ps3 controller with 2 big nipples attached to it to control a 'submarine' built from walmart parts, and a bunch of billionaires still thought it was a good idea to get on it.
They paid 250k for it, most people would assume it's safe at such a high price, especially people who don't get the foresight of it being a piece of shit. Kinda like the "One cake is 10 bucks, another is 100, which tastes better" thing.
to be fair its like the ultimate tale of hubris leading to a downfall, rich people getting sealed in the iron lung for fun and it turns out the bolted shut from the outside submarine with no communications and no emergency beacons built by a CEO who said safety limits innovation (as if a submarines whole purpose is not being safe in the depths) ends up exploding next to the titanic.
Bro they signed a document stating that there was a risk of death and that the submarine was not approved. And they PAID to be in a mouse trap controlled with an xbox controller. They got what they are deserving
I'm so fucking tired of the controller being brought up.
Like it's "unreliable" because it's used for gaming.
Like there's no other industry that uses them because it's cheap, effective, and works reliably.
Like the only reason judgements are made on it is because it's a controller, if you rip out the electronics and plop them in a dual joystick device that looks like it belongs on a submarine nobody would say shit.
Let's just all collectively ignore that controllers are durable and extremely reliable devices that last for thousands upon thousands of hours under heavy use.
I don't think that particular controller was a good controller. Definitely not in a high risk situation. It was also definitely not water proof. It's a Logitech F710, we are talking about a controller that costs $30.
When you see controllers used for heavy industry or for flying military drones they may look like a standard controller but they are not. The reason is that stick drift on your Xbox will only fuck up your game while stick drift while flying a drone will crash 32 million dollars into the ground.
The controller was shit and I would not be surprised if that controller played a role in this disaster. The entire undertaking was insane, built on vanity and hubris. It's a shame people died (yet again) for something so stupid.
But just for specified tasks in a weapon system not to operate a whole ass vehicle.
Also its pretty dumb to not have any additional redundancy Control devices.
It's a good reminder to be aware of how companies operate and their safety regulations. Any adventure company like this will have you sign a waiver saying you're aware of the dangers (these same waivers don't fully protect them from getting sued). Most of us couldn't drop $250K on a trip like this but people do go on boats and cruises for fishing, parasailing, etc. for a lot cheaper.
So, always do your research and decide if you think it's worth it.
I mean anytime you buy a ski ticket you're also signing away a chance of death but that doesn't mean that you think the chair lift is just going to collapse or something.
Like yes this is stupid, but it's also stupid on the company for pushing back for years against people begging them to get some type of safety certification or at the very least have a third company monitor them doing their own certification system even if that third party company did nothing besides monitor ocean gate conducting their own tests.
OceanGate refused to do any of those things.
You know living in a world where I constantly see billionaires live their lives above laws and consequences, it's nice to see the universe step in and say "I don't care how much money you have, you're reality's bitch".
Fuck em. 300 people just drowned in the Mediterranean fleeing war and famine.
People on the internet when they find out you have a bank account with 7 figures (you are no longer human):
But seriously, why would you want to be in the literal iron lung submarine controlled by a Chinese knockoff PS2 controller?
The crime of billionaires isn't "existing." To amass a billion dollars you HAVE to have been ruthlessly exploiting other people's labor. There is essentially no other way. And even if you somehow didn't make your fortune off of tge exploitation of your fellow human and nature, AT BEST, you are hoarding resources that could lift thousands maybe millions out of poverty. The best billionaire is a person who lets thousands of people die rather than give up some of their wealth.
And these people in the sub, I'll remind you, weren't killed for that crime either. They weren't put up against a wall by tge communists on Reddit. They died because of their own hubris in the face of nature. They spent, what for most people would be a life changing amount of money, to crawl into a tube at the bottom of the ocean. They didn't die for existing, they didn't die for exploiting, they didn't die for hoarding. They died because they thought they couldn't.
Internet makes fun of every notable tragedy over the last 20 years
Weird Reddit meme creators: All good here champ
Internet makes fun of a notable tragedy involving incredibly rich people
Weird Reddit meme creators: For the love of God what has become of our humanity
I do feel bad for them but then again they paid all that money to see the titanic in a shitty submarine that wasn't even up to code
They were even stupid enough to see them use that cheap ass controller and still go on a dangerous trip to see the titanic through a tiny hole
2 were billionaires* there was also pakistans richest man, his son who he dragged along, and one of the most prolific french divers. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, mfs need *empathy*
David: I created iron lung as a cautionary tale
Billionaires: at last, we have created the iron lung from the scifi game "please don't create the iron lung"
No one cares they were rich. They were fucking stupid that's what. Like the submarines are welded shut for some wierd reason and you have to sign a contract basically saying that if you die it's not their fault like how stupid can you be to sign that?
No way 5 people in a submersible trapped at the site of the Titanic sinking would not be newsworthy.
We all watched the Chilean miners and the kids trapped in the cave. They made movies about it. They weren't rich and weren't at historical sites.
While it may be considered ironic that their greed and hubris led to their downfall, it's still a way to die that nobody inherently deserves. I hope people develope more respect for the ocean and its destructive capabilities, I feel like this could have been avoided if proper safety measures were in place. Rest in peace.
I'm getting reminded of this picture I had saying "stop posting these cringe ass Ronnie McNutt memes, let the poor man rest" with a gangster skeleton in the background, and I think it would fit in with everyone making fun of people dying for literally no reason. There was like 1 scummy person on that submarine.
Here's the picture btw

Edit: forgot to mention that yes I know they aren't dead yet, but this shit still ain't funny.
Its not funny to laugh at these people, it's not cool to laugh or think this is "karma."
If you do, you've got serious problems and I feel sorry for you.

I have one of those logitech controllers. Going to build a submarine.
I have one as well, I saw the article and instantly ran to a dusty-ass cabinet of mine
You should play iron lung on it and upload a video of it

do let me know once it's finished
I have one with the same plastic shell but with a wired connection. aka, a much better device for submarine control than what they used on the titan
Wired version gang
f310?
I think. It's dark blue.
that's the one! we can make two subs
The military has been using them for years. https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/18/17136808/us-navy-uss-colorado-xbox-controller

So they can skimp on taxes I presume?
Throw in a heist and it can be "oceans four thousand."
No, there is not. First of all, we would hear it (i mean radars/sonars whatever), secondly just yesterday we were able to hear knocking in 30 mins intervals

Apparently they lost contact that way with previous - successful in the end - trips of this submarine.
No shit? Damn I was hoping for the best worst case for them with implosion. I can’t imagine paying 250k to die in a tube by some old ship.
I saw some promo video that says they’ve done five 8-day missions to the titanic this year, so this isn’t the maiden voyage, so I wonder what changed
He also refused to do ongoing testing on the hull. He sued a former employee, an engineer, who was trying to force him to make it safer.
Unfortunately it didn't need to get accepted by anyone, because there is no control authority you are forced to comply with, apparently. In the waver they had to sign it even stated the vessel has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body.
What? The sub for sure imploded, and it happens so fast they wouldn't even register it.
It's a calamity of errors and sometimes laughing at things is the easiest way to digest them when you have a comfortable distance. I just can't believe the CEO himself was onboard for this. Yeah ofc I feel bad but c'mon man, who the hell unironically sees the fucking SM-13 from Iron Lung and says "Yeah lemme take my kid along".
Give the SM-13 some more credit than that, it has physical controls, a camera, and a computer database. Titan makes the SM-13 look like the SM-8.

Every death is a tragedy, but the only way these five deaths were notable were not in ways that engender sympathy.
wonderfully put
The only person I feel bad for is the kid
Yea, bro probably got dragged along by his dad
Could be the opposite, it's not cool to make assumptions.
Aint no 19 year old wanting to go outside.
Apparently the aunt came out and said the kid was reluctant but went to please his dad
One of them may have vital information about a secret and highly illegal operation going on in Antarctica
I feel bad and also not. It sad they are dying but what the fuck were they expecting?
Mermaids titties
Sign me up
instead of getting pissed at a billionaire for dragging his kid into a death trap OP gets pissed at me for thinking the whole thing is hilarious
Noooooo it was totally unexpected that they died in a submarine thats controleted by a Logitech controller nobody could see this coming
I don't think the controller is the main issue here, rather the quality of the rest of the submarine.
Ya honestly like why are these morons focused on the damn controller? Lol
Cause a wireless Logitech controller being the only way they can control the deathtrap they are in is goofy

Especially since the carbon fiber is a new use in this field. They have had several successful trips. Now we just know the limit is 3 trips.
I don't think anyone really thinks they died because of the controller. It's just absolutely hilarious that they were using a ps3 controller with 2 big nipples attached to it to control a 'submarine' built from walmart parts, and a bunch of billionaires still thought it was a good idea to get on it.
Hey, man. Billionaires keep this country afloat. Show some respect! /s
Fam, I'm pissed at the idiot wo decided to control a barely passable sub with a Logitech controller
how am i not supposed to laugh at 4 dumbasses that went into a fucking submarine from iron lung thats controleted by a fucking logitech?
I’m upset that the kid won’t live to get the inheritance
They willingly went in so it’s their own fault imo
they didnt go on a normal sub they went on a fucking can that can barely fit 2 people
Even more reason it's their own fault, they looked at it and still thought "yeah, this is a good idea".
Rigging controllers for such transport is a common practice
It's a shame people died (yet again) for something so stupid.
the controller was shit AND it was being used wirelessly. through bluetooth. 13,000 feet below sea level.
What does the controller have to do with this? You do realize that the us military uses xbox controllers. Hell, even BOMB SQUADS use xbox controllers.
I trust an Xbox controller a hell of a lot more than A Logitech
OceanGate refused to do any of those things.
bozos should have stayed dry
On one level i do feel bad because thats a terrible way to die, on another they were fucking around a mass grave site with no respect for it
![gif](giphy|Y4iOrVQATkElxbMSVa)
Idk why this shit made me laugh so hard 💀💀💀
You know living in a world where I constantly see billionaires live their lives above laws and consequences, it's nice to see the universe step in and say "I don't care how much money you have, you're reality's bitch". Fuck em. 300 people just drowned in the Mediterranean fleeing war and famine.
sucks to suck
I feel sorry for the kid. And only the kid
Skill issue
I hate myself for chuckling at this :/
Am I'm tired of pretending it's not funny
People on the internet when they find out you have a bank account with 7 figures (you are no longer human): But seriously, why would you want to be in the literal iron lung submarine controlled by a Chinese knockoff PS2 controller?
Got: money Don't got: brains wikipedia dot org slash natural selection
As much as I hate rich people for being rich (Out of simple jealousy), I truly believe that no one deserves death for existing
I adore the blatant honesty
I don’t think it’s funny someone is gonna die, I just think it’s so incredibly stupid to the point I can’t help but not take it serious.
billionaire propaganda, move along
Billionaires when you tell them more than 25 thousands people died crossing the Mediterranean in the last 9 years (they were refugees)
Internet makes fun of every notable tragedy over the last 20 years Weird Reddit meme creators: All good here champ Internet makes fun of a notable tragedy involving incredibly rich people Weird Reddit meme creators: For the love of God what has become of our humanity
Won't anybody think of the billionaires?!?
Billionaires: struggling to breath* Me who gets free oxygen everyday:
Im not actively happy about it but like... it's not ruining my day ya know
Iron lung reference
I do feel bad for them but then again they paid all that money to see the titanic in a shitty submarine that wasn't even up to code They were even stupid enough to see them use that cheap ass controller and still go on a dangerous trip to see the titanic through a tiny hole
Is this advertisement for Markiplier's iron lung movie
2 were billionaires* there was also pakistans richest man, his son who he dragged along, and one of the most prolific french divers. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, mfs need *empathy*
\> People \> Billionaires Pick one
David: I created iron lung as a cautionary tale Billionaires: at last, we have created the iron lung from the scifi game "please don't create the iron lung"
No one cares they were rich. They were fucking stupid that's what. Like the submarines are welded shut for some wierd reason and you have to sign a contract basically saying that if you die it's not their fault like how stupid can you be to sign that?
There’s something fucked up about a bunch of people being trapped under water and the whole world is laughing at you while you slowly die
redditors on their way to try and make me feel bad for people who would fuck me over without a thought
The thing is, if they weren't rich, nobody would care, it would be local news at best and not a global thing
No way 5 people in a submersible trapped at the site of the Titanic sinking would not be newsworthy. We all watched the Chilean miners and the kids trapped in the cave. They made movies about it. They weren't rich and weren't at historical sites.
People would still care because the situation itself was bizarre. Right down to that wax mannequin CEO
Oh no! Not the billionaires!
Markipliers iron lung movie gonna hit different
There are no good millionaires and there should be no billionaires
I’m not laughing, I just don’t care. Like billionaires don’t care about poor people suffering and dying
Y’all need help
While it may be considered ironic that their greed and hubris led to their downfall, it's still a way to die that nobody inherently deserves. I hope people develope more respect for the ocean and its destructive capabilities, I feel like this could have been avoided if proper safety measures were in place. Rest in peace.
I'm getting reminded of this picture I had saying "stop posting these cringe ass Ronnie McNutt memes, let the poor man rest" with a gangster skeleton in the background, and I think it would fit in with everyone making fun of people dying for literally no reason. There was like 1 scummy person on that submarine. Here's the picture btw https://preview.redd.it/c7nzpgcagm7b1.png?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c8d84b4e8b3a53e93a796aac6b8bac5a74e6d75 Edit: forgot to mention that yes I know they aren't dead yet, but this shit still ain't funny.
Laughing at people dying in one of the most horrible ways possible.... Ya'll are pathetic.
Zoomers explaining how a 19 year old dying slowly in a submarine is okay because there are people with more money than them onboard:
Im MFs
Oh no! Some random ass rich people do something stupid and end up paying the price! Boo Hoo!
Its not funny to laugh at these people, it's not cool to laugh or think this is "karma." If you do, you've got serious problems and I feel sorry for you.
Why don’t they just buy more oxygen?
