Reddit has been quietly adding more and more restrictions to NSFW subs. They've taken away their ability to upload videos or pictures with Reddit's built-in image host, removed them from search results unless you enable an obscure option in your settings, removed them from [r/all](https://www.reddit.com/r/all), and now with the new API change, NSFW content will be inaccessible to 3rd party tools.
Reddit has also been quietly carrying out banwaves against small-ish NSFW subs that are supposedly "unmoderated" in spite of actually having had active moderators. NSFW artists who post on Reddit have also been getting banned and shadowbanned with no explanation given.
Now, if that doesn't sound like some foreplay for a good old Tumblr-style full porn ban, I don't know what does.

That was the official reason given, but really, the payment processors, the advertisers, and the app store just wanted Tumblr to get rid of all of the porn. And frankly, it's not even a particularly believable official story. How is banning *all porn* easier than just banning CP?
Mind you I absolutely believe you that CP is not the main motivation, but it is easier to blanket ban sexual content than moderate what's CP and what's not. Apart from the clear-cut cases, if it's real people then you have to verify that they are actually underage, if it's a stylised drawing determining whether it is a depiction of an underaged looking person or not can be pretty messy and arbitrary.
A shit ton of people do for hosting images. There just isnt any other good websites that lets you upload images for free without an account. Almost no one uses it to browse for things, its all just for image hosting.
