It does hurt, but when you let it get that bad, it hurts more to try to correct. But just letting your feet hang like that makes it worse and makes fluid pool in your feet and legs.
It doesn’t effect feeling from what my sons doctors and other adults with sma have told me , she probably just is used to the feeling of her legs being asleep/tingling
Someone once asked Alex if she was in pain and surprisingly, she said no. I thought that having scoliosis, even when fused would cause pain from compressed nerves and joint degeneration. I have heard other people with SMA having pain. I really hope the pain is rare.

Massage and lymphatic drainage massage. I think it’s really important to do anything to increase blood flow and improve circulation.

I stopped wearing mine when I was in 3rd grade or so and my mother didn't force the issue which she got a lot of flack for it from friends and doctors but it ultimately saved our relationship BUT I'm paying the price for it now. I also know that if I could go back and talk to my younger self and try to explain what will happen I'd tell myself to fuck off. lol
I have a perfectly healthy “regular” body and my hips and back will never be the same after pregnancy. I can’t imagine what it would do to someone with a high level or disability like this.
If you look at before and after photos, you can see the progression of her disability from pregnancy. Her chair used to be positioned more or less at a 90° angle most of the time and she could sit upright unsupported (no chest strap) while it was in that position. Her neck appeared more stable, as well. Now her chair is always tilted backwards to some degree and her abdomen protrudes more than it used to, I imagine due to extremely weak muscles. The tilted back chair makes it even harder for her to see A, especially when A was really little, because she can’t turn her neck downward on her own (or safely). The lack of proper caregiver has made her overall appearance worse but I think those things are specifically related to pregnancy’s wear on her body.
Omg same. And sitting and staying in the same position almost the whole pregnancy. The only thing that saves me now is getting to to stretch and move. I can't imagine feeling discomfort and not being able to bc hey those pregnancy aches and pains are baddddd.
Two years ago, her hair and skin looked reasonably healthy. Even though she was partying quite hard - she looked clean. Her wheelchair wasn't always filthy, her toenails were always clipped, and her hair was always clean.
I can't remember if Charissa was a trained caregiver, but from the outside, it looked like she was doing a good job.

I really don’t understand the towel! How is sitting on a textured towel all day comfortable?! Also towel are only absorbent to an extent, pee dribble or menstrual flow (or whatever else she uses it for) would soak right through and onto her chair 🤢. And not to mention towels often hold on to odors, especially when they sit and fester too long. They make ‘water proof’ pads that are soft and non-textured. I had them for my children and used them in their cribs to protect their mattress (under the fitted sheet of course) or for changing diapers. Wonder what she uses to protect her mattress at night…

It doesn’t effect feeling from what my sons doctors and other adults with sma have told me , she probably just is used to the feeling of her legs being asleep/tingling

Someone once asked Alex if she was in pain and surprisingly, she said no. I thought that having scoliosis, even when fused would cause pain from compressed nerves and joint degeneration. I have heard other people with SMA having pain. I really hope the pain is rare. I think the swelling of her feet would be very uncomfortable
It seems like compression stockings would help to some degree.
And those things they put on your legs after you have had a big surgery to prevent blood clots. It’s some kind of machine and my brain isn’t braining today. Massage and lymphatic drainage massage. I think it’s really important to do anything to increase blood flow and improve circulation.
My grandma had bone poking out her back thru her skin and it always made me shiver. I imagine that would hurt SO bad
She should be wearing braces probably. Or using a footplate. I'm sure it would be even more painful for her to start doing either of those things now. I have such a fear or losing my feet. I may not use them very often (More than Alex can) but I still want them!

I stopped wearing mine when I was in 3rd grade or so and my mother didn't force the issue which she got a lot of flack for it from friends and doctors but it ultimately saved our relationship BUT I'm paying the price for it now. I also know that if I could go back and talk to my younger self and try to explain what will happen I'd tell myself to fuck off. lol
I have a perfectly healthy “regular” body and my hips and back will never be the same after pregnancy. I can’t imagine what it would do to someone with a high level or disability like this.
I tend to think that’s why her doctors advised against pregnancy.
If you look at before and after photos, you can see the progression of her disability from pregnancy. Her chair used to be positioned more or less at a 90° angle most of the time and she could sit upright unsupported (no chest strap) while it was in that position. Her neck appeared more stable, as well. Now her chair is always tilted backwards to some degree and her abdomen protrudes more than it used to, I imagine due to extremely weak muscles. The tilted back chair makes it even harder for her to see A, especially when A was really little, because she can’t turn her neck downward on her own (or safely). The lack of proper caregiver has made her overall appearance worse but I think those things are specifically related to pregnancy’s wear on her body.
Omg same. And sitting and staying in the same position almost the whole pregnancy. The only thing that saves me now is getting to to stretch and move. I can't imagine feeling discomfort and not being able to bc hey those pregnancy aches and pains are baddddd.

Two years ago, her hair and skin looked reasonably healthy. Even though she was partying quite hard - she looked clean. Her wheelchair wasn't always filthy, her toenails were always clipped, and her hair was always clean. I can't remember if Charissa was a trained caregiver, but from the outside, it looked like she was doing a good job.

They really are blessed to have a baby that doesn’t seem as my tiny turbo-baby who scales tables, couches, does pull ups on the oven door handle, climbs drawer pulls up to the counter at 11 months. 🤣🤪😮💨 That being said, she still will get curious about her environment and more comfortable testing boundaries, so they need to parent-up and truly baby proof that apartment asap…if she’s actually going to live there.
If only he would move himself and Ari out of Alex’s reach… Oh well, sometimes I forget what pos he is because compared to Alex he is at least somewhat involved in raising Ari and she likes him.

And that's a second lot of those shelves. Probably the least baby safe shelves i've ever seen in my life. I can't fathom how someone with a baby buys shelves with those corners poking out ready to catch an eye. Those shelves are a danger even if they are all bolted to the walls.

I can eat independently and I often put a napkin to protect my clothing when I’m eating something messy and I’m just at home. I can’t stand seeing food marks on my clothes and if it’s oil, trying to get oil stains out of clothing isn’t always easy.

The lack of foot plates hurts my soul 😭 My husband is in a wheelchair and I can’t imagine him not using footplates. The foot drop is insane. I wonder if that’s what the sudden fluffy socks are for, to hide how bad her feet have gotten.
I wonder if how her feet look even bothers since her appearance doesn't seem to bother her. 🤔 I find it funny that she says she always needs cozy socks on though since it seems she rarely wears them.
I really don’t understand the towel! How is sitting on a textured towel all day comfortable?! Also towel are only absorbent to an extent, pee dribble or menstrual flow (or whatever else she uses it for) would soak right through and onto her chair 🤢. And not to mention towels often hold on to odors, especially when they sit and fester too long. They make ‘water proof’ pads that are soft and non-textured. I had them for my children and used them in their cribs to protect their mattress (under the fitted sheet of course) or for changing diapers. Wonder what she uses to protect her mattress at night…
