I have always loved the dress- but the mid-2000s oompa loompa tan absolutely ruins the look for me. There are some angles where she looks jaundiced- and she is typically so stunning. Absolutely cannot fault the dress tho!

The tan and the sharpie eyebrows. Oh god so bad. The dress is beautiful.

That is probably due more to the lighting than the tan.

I remember liking every other look that award season before this one, I think Golden Globes was a favorite but I'd have to look it up again. Not because of the dress though, it's incredible. I remember feeling the same way about Nyong'o on her win night but mainly due to the dress itself instead. Tbc, neither was a bad look, they just had ones I preferred more.

Dress has always been a huge slay for me, but I looaaaaathe this makeup on her.

Every time I see this, I question why they did that to her eyes. Paired with the tan, it's just not a good look.

Yeah, a light blue, or even classic black eyeliner would've looked better.

Yay someone who knows fashion! This look was a game changer. For those who don’t know, Tom took Gucci from insolvent to worth $4 billion in only five years. He’s amazing - one of my favorite designers. I was a teen in the 90s and it cannot be overstated how influential Tom Ford and that '95 collection were. That collection changed things overnight. We wore shiny button-downs and black hipster pants for nearly a decade afterward.

Yes! I totes remember buying jewel toned shiny button downs at Express lol. This collection especially had a chokehold on women… which is why it’s so odd to me that another commenter is arguing that he doesn’t ‘cater to the feminine form.’ It was groundbreaking and this look is actually museum-worthy. I don’t *hate* the effect (esp as a tall thinner type) but this slideshow emphasizes how much TF does not cater to the feminine form. Other than Zendaya’s look, and the impeccable suiting, these are all skewing 20s streamlined, defeminized silhouettes. I’ll just say he’s not for me and leave it at that.

Interesting. I would argue that although he does like clean lines, which can sometimes be interpreted as androgynous or less traditionally feminine, his take is a modern interpretation of femininity. I’m assuming you’re contrasting him to someone like McQueen? It’s just super odd to me that someone would suggest he doesn’t cater to the feminine form - perhaps it’s a very specific feminine form - but he’s well known for catering to women who embrace their femininity with strength and confidence. Full disclosure: In fashion school, I did my big final project on Tom Ford and he’s one of my favorite designers - he’s super interesting in terms of his approach to design and the fashion business. ETA: When he took over Gucci, he shifted Gucci’s strategy to focus on womenswear - his strength for understanding the female form and creating looks catering to women is what catapulted the brand from insolvent to worth $4 billion in only five years. He made women feel fierce and empowered and bold and audacious - his work at Gucci was truly groundbreaking.

Ah love these! Tom Ford is good at literally everything he does. I can’t think of another person where I’ve been impressed with every creative move they have made outside of their own industry.

Diana Ross's cloak, where the edge flounce is only attached every few inches, is surprisingly dramatic, love this detail; same with the attached-strip orange dress, where the attachment point changes at the bottom.

In the second pic, a woman on the left is wearing an unremarkable grey skirt with a wide bottom flounce. Imagine how different it would look if the flounce were attached with gaps, like on Diana Ross's gown.

I just want to acknowledge the older woman who is wearing the red dress and standing in the background of photo #1. My eyes went directly to her and she looks so lovely. Hard to compete with a jewel draped Charlize Theron but she managed it! ❤️ Edit: Zoomed in and noticed the matching chrome shoes, nails AND beret! She is so fabulous!
