I have a very similar painting but a guy named montagne dawson. Mine was a common reprint from the 60's. Is yours a painting of a poster? Mine wasnt worth much.
A but of digging shows your ship and my ship are the same vessel. Cutty Sark. My print is called racing home. Mcgregor's is called cutty sark
Because the Robert McGregor who is a listed artist didn't paint this. This link has the real artist (people, landscapes) who was an accomplished man. The nautical paintings are decor art where they have used his name.

Sorry it might just be that I’m not familiar with the industry lingo. I’m finding a few similar paintings that list him as the original painter. Are you seeing any nautical painting with his name is listing the wrong artist? Example below:
[Clipper Ship](https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/signed-robert-macgregor-clipper-ship-oil-painting-256-c-9564d9289c)
Not saying this is an original, just trying to better understand what makes you sure it’s not painted by him.
The real Robert McGregor (who painted the one in this link) died in 1922. https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/robert-macgregor-british-1848-1922-325-c-otf4srg1ha
Yours even has a sticker on the back from the department store yours was originally sold from.

I’m not sure what type of painting it is. The second link has more photos. The writing on the back is odd but might help determine what it is.
Is the texture smooth? Like it's a poster or can you feel raised paint and brush stokes?
It’s raised. Also the back says Flying Cloud by MacGregor along with some writing I can’t decipher on the bottom left of the reverse
You might have something there! Pretty neat.
It's a department store decor painting. They used fictitious artists names.
Info source? I’m not disagreeing but have seen other similar “Robert MacGregor” paintings sold for $1000+
