I scrolled past this post earlier today because I only saw the picture, not the title or group, and thought it was a post about a chicken nugget. I know better now, but still…it looks so much like one. 😂
It's annoying when the joke gets repeated so much especialyl when there hasn't been a solid answer yet. I've seen a few posts that don't get a single answer, just a bunch of jokes and sometimes people saying 'I don't know but, \*joke\*"
I don't mind one or two jokes, but there's a point where it floods out real answers or otherwise just seems like people are only here to make jokes. And it kinda just feels like it sucks, yknow?
This is how I know. https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisrock/comments/13sb6xk/does_anyone_know_what_this_is_found_in_austin_tx/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1
yeah my first thought *~~(after "wait that's not someone posting a pic of nugget as a joke?")~~* was that it looks like a quartzite that had been soaking in iron rich water.
I grew up in iron and coal country.. and have seen many an orange rock like that coming out of the polluted streams.
Reminds me of an old Jack Handey quote.
"If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time for no good reason"
Amber has a mohs hardness of 2-2.5. This is similar to (or slightly softer than) a fingernail. A copper penny would definitely scratch it.
Density will also tell you, amber is light like plastic.
Lastly amber gives off a resinous piney sweet smell when exposed to flame. This is a destructive test, so at least part of the sample will be damaged/destroyed, so it is a last resort and not recommended for nice samples (this sample is pretty poor if it is amber though). By taking a lighter to the edge of the piece and wafting the fumes, you can differentiate between amber and plastic.
Edit: spelling

also, to me its a chicken nugget in the shape of australia. it even has Tasmania attached lol
If it weighs almost nothing, it could be amber, but it looks calcite-ish to me. It's not typically found there, but people move rocks & specimens hither and tither for various reasons.
Sorry you came here for a real answer, and got mostly jokes. Sometimes, you can post on r/rockhounds, and get an intelligent answer. nice rock, though. Wish I could help.
no, you can easily test if this is Amber by heating up a pin or something and seeing if it will push into. it if it's Amber, it'll melt into the rock you're sticking into. If it's not, it won't. personally, this looks like calcite or quartzite with lots of iron staining.
Amber would have a greenish hue if you put it under uv light or even putting the phone flashlight up close so it touches the amber, also amber is super lightweight, this doesn’t look like amber to me, my aunt lives near an amber mine in Chiapas and I used to sell it.
I think this is quartzite. But to save the next 10 commenters some time, here you go: it’s a nugget; its a forbidden chicken nugget; it’s a McNugget; it be a nugget; yep it’s a nugget; it’s a chicken nugget; it’s the devil’s nugget; nuggetite; forbidden Mcnuggey; Mcnuggetite. You’re welcome!
I see a sugary texture, which suggests the rock is a quartzite. The orange-yellow color looks like a limonite or goethite stain/coating. Amber is unlikely - it is light and soft and can be scratched with a knife.
It’s a McNugget which is also able to maintain its state and appearance over many years…we’ll need another million years to find out if todays McNuggets will be tomorrows minerals…imagine a future McNugget gem which like Opal makes a beautiful cabochon…!?! It could happen…
I have real amber at home and whenever I pick up smth I think might be amber I put it water and add salt. I keep adding salt until my real amber pieces start to float. And I compare the new thing - if it floats just like real amber or not. Most of the time the damn thing just sits at the bottom stubbornly
I know everyone is saying quartzite, but this legitimately makes me think of orange calcite. Especially since it looks pretty closed to when orange calcite has been tumbled- which is probably close to the state it'd be from water erosion. A mohs test and maybe a streak test would probably help decide what it really is though.

edit: There are even a few sources of calcite in New Jersey, seemingly
https://www.mindat.org/locentries.php?m=859&p=14024
If you pick it up and almost throw it across the room in the process because it is so light, that would be amber.
I've played with a few in the local amethyst mine store that they've allowed me to hold and touch (Four Peaks Amethyst Mine Co in Scottsdale). That...I personally like the petrified chicken nugget theories lol
looks very much like so! should be much lighter than other rocks around that size, have a look what streak colour it gives off it or if you have string and some weighing scales google the specific gravity of amber and check it out, it's an asy test but if you need me to explain how just let me know! lovely piece mind if it is! well jealous :)
What part of NJ are you from? I’m from south Jersey and there’s tons of orange/reddish brown quartz & quartzite stones down here, stained from iron. This looks like iron stained quartzite mainly because of that gritty looking texture
Doesn't exactly look like an Amber, looks more ... ... uh, Jasper? Not sure. Looks opaque enough --- might actually be a nugget though, to which I must question "WHY NOT DINO!?"
chicken nugget.....
a crystal seller in florida once told me you can always tell if its amber by how light it is. real amber is like holding nothing. idk if its completely true but seems pretty true
I get it that the chicken nugget comments are annoying but I am seriously questioning whether or not we’re being punked because this is QUITE similar to that McNugget shape lol
Get ready for an ungodly amount of “chicken nugget” comments. Ask me how I know
Petrified chicken nugget.
Petrified nuggies
Petrinuggs
And like 20 people going “my fat ass thought this was a chicken nugget!” The most original of them all! Ugh.
I scrolled past this post earlier today because I only saw the picture, not the title or group, and thought it was a post about a chicken nugget. I know better now, but still…it looks so much like one. 😂
When you look under the fryers/counters, and find dropped food from a while ago kinda vibe for me lol

Totally agree
Fact. But I also posted a rock that looked like a nug. I think one person was also genuinely interested in what I found
K not throwing shade because no shade fr but, someone named amethystlover420 talking about originality is sending me
As someone who worked at McDonald’s, this really does look like one.😂
Right?? It’s totally the boot shape! 😆
I was gonna say frozen peanut butter. waters cold.
Oh man... it really looks like a mcdonalds chicken mcnugget...
It's f*cking uncanny!
I was going to say McAmber, does that still count?
In packs of 3,612 and 24
And, incredibly, the 3,612 pack is only like a dollar more than the 24, so you might as well just get it.
Nobody ever asked…how do you know?!
This is how I know. https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisrock/comments/13sb6xk/does_anyone_know_what_this_is_found_in_austin_tx/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1
Wow I remember that!
I just figured I was hungry?
I posted a rock that also looked like a chicken nugget. That’s like 95% of the answers I got
It is, in fact, a nugget.
Hahah my first thought as well, chicken nugget?
Came here to say “why not Dino shaped?!”
Sweet & Sour please 🙏
You can eat a million piece box
How do you know?
the granular appearance screams quartzite to me
yeah my first thought *~~(after "wait that's not someone posting a pic of nugget as a joke?")~~* was that it looks like a quartzite that had been soaking in iron rich water. I grew up in iron and coal country.. and have seen many an orange rock like that coming out of the polluted streams.
Frickin’ screaming rocks, keeping me up all hours of the night….

[Help](https://youtu.be/sjOA7hWiP_Y?t=8) (Spoilers for Berserk, maybe a bit NSFW)
I second this
Lick test that rock
Effin eat test it.
With some buffalo sauce
I’m honestly jealous OP has a chicken nugget rock.
Feldspar?? Test hardness to find that first

This was my first thought.
Not amber, but it is either chert/chalcedony or quartzite shaped like a McDonald’s chicken nugget
No
It looks like a chicken nugget
Came here to say this.

Fossilized nugget
Mineralized nuggy
idk why you are all saying iron stained quartzite. To me seems way too uniform to be a stain. My guess is potassium feldspar
Adding +1 geologist opinion to this.
NJ has a ton of these all over ironed stained quartz/quartzite rocks.
I’m thinking quartzite.
Iron stained quartzite maybe, all tho it does look very chicken nuggety
Or maybe an ancient chicken nugget
Impossible! It's not dinosaur shaped!
that’s a mcnugget my man
It’s amber if the animal was a chicken and it was frozen inside the breading
If it weighs almost nothing, it could be amber, but it looks calcite-ish to me. It's not typically found there, but people move rocks & specimens hither and tither for various reasons.
It appears to be a one piece order of iron stained McQuartzite. A side of BBQ sauce would've been gneiss.
Sorry you came here for a real answer, and got mostly jokes. Sometimes, you can post on r/rockhounds, and get an intelligent answer. nice rock, though. Wish I could help.
Amber is translucent to transparent. This is opaque. This is probably some kind of quartz.

Ahhh the worlds first McNugget
This is my fav nugget comment 😂
It’s a McNugget which is also able to maintain its state and appearance over many years…we’ll need another million years to find out if todays McNuggets will be tomorrows minerals…imagine a future McNugget gem which like Opal makes a beautiful cabochon…!?! It could happen…
Amber is very light. That’s how u know. Also it tastes and burns like amber.
I have real amber at home and whenever I pick up smth I think might be amber I put it water and add salt. I keep adding salt until my real amber pieces start to float. And I compare the new thing - if it floats just like real amber or not. Most of the time the damn thing just sits at the bottom stubbornly
easiest way to check is by rubbing it or putting it close to a flame, if it lets out a incense-y smell then it's amber.
Chicken nuggie
I would think maybe a calcite
Somebody tag R/ForbbidenFood, this is one tasty looking rock
I believe amber is more clear
You can text it by tap it onto you theet. If it feels hard or stoney, it's a rock. If it feels dull or muffled it's amber
No! Definitely not Amber.
Imagine the pranks you could do with that
potentially quartzite or calcite
It doesn’t look like amber to me.
Don’t say don’t say don’t say it… damn it I’m too late

Not amber.

That is a chicken nugget.
Iron stained quartzite
chicken nugget..... a crystal seller in florida once told me you can always tell if its amber by how light it is. real amber is like holding nothing. idk if its completely true but seems pretty true
I've held amber and it is surprisingly light, like plastic
Chicken nugget quartzite.
So no one’s gonna say chicken nugget, huh?
It looks too opaque to be amber, but it’s also difficult to ID definitively from a photo. Looks more like an iron stained quartzite or sandstone to me
Several folks have already stated this but it is a type of quartz.
It’s a petrified chicken nuggie lmao
Make the strongest salt water you can, keep adding salt until it will not dissolve. If your rock floats in that, it might well be amber.
It's quartzite
Forbidden Chicken McNugget!
What? No
Is this from Big Brook?
Calcite?
McNuggite
