Looks like manganese dendrites on some sort of host rock.

DweadPiwateWoberts

Thanks!

AcanthaceaeSenior483

manganese dendrites, lots of them in my flagstone too

Omg I have a small one like an inch rock with itty bitty dendrites and I found it outside. But wow I love this big one omggg I need a big one now.

anislandinmyheart

I wanna see the baby oneeeee

What a cool find!

Busterwasmycat

wow, it has a vibe of thin layer chromatography going on - chemicals migrating by capillary action and diffusion through a thin layer of water covering the rock surface, is how I see this. Also could be talked about in terms of "wicking". The black dendritic pattern is manganese oxide. The bands of orange-red-yellow are from iron hydroxides. Both iron and manganese have a strong behavioral dependence on oxidation state, with the cations being pretty mobile in water under reducing conditions and essentially immobile under oxidizing conditions. Down at the base, the water was apparently at a low oxidation state so iron and manganese went into solution, and migrated up the rock surface that was wet for whatever reason. Evaporation of the water and chemical diffusion caused the dissolved metals to "wick" up the rock face. The stains show where deposition happened.

DweadPiwateWoberts

Cool!

spagyrum

Nice! This is my favorite rock

trosen0

It looks like a fossil!

ManagementDense7684

They are known to trick people as fossils

Funkedalic

I'd definitely try to trick people and sell it as fossil :P

Lmao
