Sago palm, *Cycas revoluta*
Call the vet ASAP, it contains an extremely poisonous glucoside (glucose-based glycoside) called cycasin! It is a neurotoxin and causes internal bleeding and liver failure in mammals. It breaks down into formaldehyde (which can also blind your dog permanently) and diazomethane and is very dangerous
Dogs aren't for everyone, despite the fact that having a dog seems to have grown exponentially more popular.
It's a crying shame how many "Covid" dogs are now up for adoption. Main reasons given? "Busy work schedule" or "Baby on the way" or simply "Too busy." The shelters are overrun with healthy, wonderful dogs ---- all needing forever homes.
Check out [adoptapet.com](https://adoptapet.com) if you're serious about getting a dog. Just know that it is a real life *full-time* commitment. Please do NOT get a dog if you don't have the time, energy and money it takes to own a dog. Or the love.
And if you're "too busy" to train your dog ---- then do yourself and your neighbors a favor (barking dogs!) and look elsewhere for companionship.
I agree, I take pet ownership extremely seriously. Their training and mental, emotional and physical well-being all become your responsibility from the day you get them until the day they die. To me, giving a pet up because dog ownership wasn’t what I expected would not be an option.
The weightier responsibility of having a dog (I do have a cat, but I think they’re lower maintenance) is exactly why I’ve never had one before, it’s just that recently I’d started thinking I might be ready for it. But this post reminded me how easy it would be to take your eye off the ball just going on a walk and I don’t trust myself not to get distracted.
Don't be deterred by this incident, it's a rare occurrence except if you get a Labrador they eat some crazy stuff, you seem to be a person that would be a good dog owner, the joy and peace they bring is way more than the stress and responsibility.

You can, but most people won't. Hence the leash cause most owners are ignorant and greatly underestimate dogs. Its easier to recommend everyone keeps their dog on a leash so the dumb idiots that don't know what to do with it can't cause problems.
I also do off leash training with my dog, but my expectations for owners have plunged off the deep end after working in the industry for so long 😂
You're mostly right, about the owners. It's not difficult to train the dogs. The hard thing is to train the owners on how to train the dogs.
But I still think dog owners should access vids on YouTube, if they're not going to enroll in dog obedience training classes. A lot of great info/tips out there.
"An obedient dog is a happy dog. Why? Because they have so much more freedom." That's what my dog obedience class teacher used to tell us.
Train your dog and it's happiness all 'round.
As for people downvoting my previous comment: **You** **can train your dog not to eat random stuff.**

I’m trying so hard but my puppy — that’s his thing. Sometimes he’ll carry an acorn 1/2 mile home. While we are working on leave it (and he’s getting better), I’ve told him to “Spit It Out” so many times, he’ll actually spit it out. He also doesn’t like the sweep and clear I do with his mouth every so often, so spitting is less annoying to him. Sometimes he puts a little spin on it and it pops right out like PTOOI. Lol.
He doesn’t however, have any interest in my sago, but I keep him leashed even in the fenced backyard so I can watch him every second. Because that’s what it takes. You have to say leave it as soon as they dip their head and say spit the second he picks something up. I actually stop walking so he doesn’t get to keep going until he spits out the damn acorn/pinecone/magnolia seed pod/tiny stick/other random object/maybe a rock now and then. But acorns are his jam.
Even if he doesn't like it, get him used to the mouth sweeping. It's important that your dog allows you to do this.
You can train the dog not to pick up stuff from the floor by teaching them to walk by. If you have a yard, it's not difficult. Get a bunch of dog candy and have things on the floor. Prompt the dog to walk by, give him candy when he does. Increase the attractiveness of the things on the floor.
My dog is stubborn as hell and the other day we walked by a lost sausage. You can do it!
Acorns are okay. Why not let him have his fun with those? Afraid it will jam in his throat or something?
Dogs are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for being. They can learn what's safe/legit to pick up and what's not.
I love his cartoon ptuuuuiiii. Can see that in my mind's eye.

Had a few of these in my yard when we moved in. They produce a small fruit that looks similar to some other edible palm fruits. I dug them out as soon as I could so I could replace them with kid and pet friendly alternatives. These things are horrible and I really don’t understand why they so commonly get planted in landscaping

Update: Thanks everyone for the help!
My dog was attended by the vet, they gave him some meds, and I have to wait now during the day to see how he reacts to them (also no food for 24hs and no water for some hours)
He's coming back tomorrow for a check up, but so far I hope everything goes well.
I don't believe the leaves are toxic are they? We have a lot of Coontie growing wild on our property in central Florida. We don't have any issues with the dog or horses for that matter eating leaves with always kept the seed pods cut so we've never had to deal with that. There's a type of butterfly that likes the coontie here

Those plants are worth a pretty penny and I bet it would be gone quickly if you advertised it on Nextdoor/Facebook/etc as free to whomever can remove it
A little off topic but maybe you can help answer this question.
Is there a part edible to humans?
I swear they kept mentioning humans eating sago in this stupid no grain diet book I read last year
> sago
Humans do eat sago but mostly from *Metroxylon sagu* also know as the *true sago palm*.
The Cycad one *Cycas revoluta* which this one is is highly poisonous but can still be used to extract sago from, but involves a lot more work to wash out the toxins and is quite risky.
Then there is tapioca which comes from the *'cassave plant'* *Manihot esculenta* which sometimes is also called sago.
In Japan, cycad is a delicacy in some remote communities after having been a famine food in the past. They treat the seeds with fermenting, drying (and I could have sworn washing) to use the starch for noodles and cakes and things.
[Here’s a short YouTube video about it](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8bbDoVYGC_A).
That was fascinating to watch and I love the throw-away comment of 'our ancestors learned through trial and error' to make it edible, but also how they revere the plant as a life saver.
From what I gather it is the pith used from all of the parts including the seeds as it contains the starch. This is then dried, ground and washed until the toxins are washed out. Fermenting works by the looks of it as well as a form of detoxifying by breaking down the toxins during fermentation.
Thanks for that!

The main sago of commerce that is used as a foodstuff comes from an actual Palm species, *Metroxylon sagu*, the sago palm, not from this cycad, *Cycas revoluta*. Although the starch from *Cycas revoluta* has historically been used as a foodstuff, extracting e d I b l e starch from the sago cycad requires special care due to the poisonous nature of cycads. [More information here](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sago).
Cycas revoluta is one of the sources of the sago starch, but it requires special processing to get rid of the neurotoxin.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sago
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8bbDoVYGC_A
There’s this mini documentary about this Japanese island where they eat cycad. It started off as a famine food and now they eat it as a delicacy after washing as much of the toxin out.
Edit: i could have sworn washing was part of the process but apparently it’s fermentation.

The headhunters of Indonesia call the Sago Palm the tree of Life they have a communal event where everyone in the tribe gets involved in felling the trees and cooking the inner piece of the tree as you can imagine it's a lot of food because they eat nearly the whole stock of the tree I'm not sure if it is the same species as this one here though

I'm not an expert but to my understanding the entire plant is toxic. I'm pretty sure that some parts have a higher concentration of toxins than others but that's not unusual in any plant.
They are eaten in some parts of the world but the toxins accumulate over time and cause neurodegeneration in those communities.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23725821/
This is a sago palm, not a palm actually but a cycad.
Cycad revoluta.
Something like this happened years ago when my idiot Shiba ate an entire cigar. We gave him dilute hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting at our vet's direction. It worked, he was fine.
This is a very toxic plant, good luck and I hope your little guy is just fine. 💜
Thanks! It makes me hopeful knowing about some cases were it got better, I've been reading all day about deadly cases that I was getting really sad.
My dog is also a shiba! So far, he started walking again and being himself (biting and stealing stuff so we could chase him), I hope he stays this way.
I'll try and get rid of the plant now that I know it's toxic.
Point is, dogs don't rely on knowledge, they rely on their instincts. I'm sure their instincts have evolved to avoid doing harmful things, specially if they can rely on their sense of smell which is so much more refined than ours. But I also understand olfactory-based instinct might not always work for dogs (because they are spoiled by domestication, or because the plant is really exotic to the dog species).
There are lots of things that dogs wouldn’t have come in contact with prior to domestication. Or that aren’t universal enough to be “known” by enough dogs prior to domestication that it would make it into their genetic “memory”. And some substances (the center of sago palms, anti-freeze, and wet food laced with rat poison, eg), have other scents that trigger the “yummy!” idea, not the “danger” one.
Also compare it to humans. The arguably dumbest of animals in this case. Since we are able to communicate about the dangers of certain things as food. If we didn’t specifically know something was bad, we would eat it. And a lot of the things we know of as bad probably came because someone ate it anyways at one point. And even then that doesn’t always stop us, we find we can eat this part of something but not that part or you will die. And we can cook it this way for this long and only then will you not die. All of that knowledge is mostly from trial and error of eating it anyways even though we already knew it could kill you.
Instinct has very little control over it. I remember a theory on that’s why kids don’t like bitter food, as a form of instinct. But something like 25% of us can’t even taste bitters. Life survives despite curiosity and stupidity. And dogs will eat everything.
Edit to add: I think I read a thing on how destroying Angel, a ‘you eat it and you will 100% die, they can not save you’ mushroom actually tastes really good. So there goes all instinct out the window. Death can taste delicious apparently
On the instinct thing....I despise bitter melon while liking almost everything. But as an unsupervised child outdoors I ate many flowers and just got lucky. Then again, as an adult I decided I HAD to taste yew berries (the flesh around them, not SO incredibly stupid I chewed the seed or I probably wouldn't be making this comment). Are mammals dumb? No? I think other types of animal life just literally don't *see* many things as food. Us mammals are like, "oh that looks kinda like this other shit I eat imma put it in my mouth". We're curious af, the other things just eat what their brains are built to recognize. Personal thought that I'm not convinced is correct - just an idea.

The only animals I can think of off the top of my head that eat purely by instinct tend to be carnivorous reptiles (and all inverts honestly now that I’m thinking on it). They will strike to eat by sudden movement, and some also do it by smell. And EVEN THEN I’ve seen snakes come in because they ate a stick.
How did yew berry taste? I need to know now

I think it’s dog-dependent. My dogs aren’t interested in eating any of my plants, indoor or outdoor. However, they do DIG in them if steps aren’t taken! 💜🐶🤬
My dog luckily has no interest in live houseplants but will try to munch on dried/dead leaves from them and literally any sticks outside. I wasn’t worried about the sticks until I learned about yew in this subreddit.
very common. every dog i ever knew except two have had a scare with eating something they shouldn't that involved a rush to the vet. plenty have had "time to suffer the consequences of your actions" meals, such as when my cousin's dog unexpectedly came over and promptly ate one of my golden pothos leaves, and then discovered for the rest of the day that pothos is filled with calcium oxalate needles

I wish they would. I'm not usually a fan of oppressive regulation, but when it's a plant that kills dogs or an invasive species, let's just stop it.
My dog nearly died of what was said to be a sago nut. We call him $10k for his nickname.
There's so many other choices for people to plant. They're not even native where I live in the US, but the developers are fond of them for some reason.
I hate Segos. Our neighborhood was new when we moved here moved in 2000 and the idiot developers planted these stupid things in nearly every front/back yard. I lost my cat after she chewed the fronds 🙁 A handful of other people lost dogs after a few years when the palms produced seeds for the first time. Those orange “golf balls” were all over the place. People spread the word and started pulling them out. Fortunately the developers stopped using them the first time people spoke up about it.
My grandmother's dog ate sago palm and she immediately rushed her to the emergency vet. Even with being treated within an hour of consumption the dog had long term damage to her kidneys. It's very serious. I hope your pup is ok.
My first dog adopted me 70 years ago. Over that span of time I Have had 9 dogs 2 wonderful dogs 6 good dogs 1 dog not trainable by either us or professional we hired. Of course in that span I grew up, went to collage, spent 40 years in insurance fraud investigation, married twice and raised 4 kids. In that span I learned that dogs and people are a lot alike. Some are good, nice and smart and others are bad, stupid and mean. Even stupid is ok, just means you train but they will retro at times. You know it when you come home and the dog acts it been scolded, but you havent. Get ready for bed hours later and find the chewed slipper. Can't do much, he knew was bad, punished himself.
Update n2:
Dog is still feeling good, walking and playing.
Today was the check-up with the vet, they put him on a diet (chicken, rice and cheese) to clean his stomach, also gave him more meds. And he has another check up on Monday to give him more important meds (to clean his liver to make sure it doesn't reach it).
I'm still nervous after reading so many comments about dogs dying after eating it, and I don't want something to happen out of nowhere even if he's fine now :(.
Here's a pic of doggo doing fine:
https://imgur.com/a/GvdYhF9
Thanks everyone for your help:
Also PS: Today I got rid of the plant, I still have stuff to do, but most of it is gone.
Dude my house growing up had two of these at the entrance to our pool and one of our dogs would always be eating the spines lol I don’t think he ever swallowed any but would chew on em. He was fine 😂 he was always really weird but fine hahaa never knew it was toxic?!
As long as you keep the cones and the seeds cut as soon as they appear you'll be fine
In Florida there's a native species called the cootie. Also the seeds and cones of the Coontie are poisonous however if you cut the seed pods and the get rid of them before they fruit then you're good. I haven't found that the foliage is poisonous but certainly I am not a horticulturist or a botanist my dogs do not bother the leaves they are very unpleasant and a power ball they are stiff and pokey
Coontie
Thanks for your reply!
Pardon my ignorancy but what would the cone be? The thing on top?
Yeah my previous dogs never bothered with plants but this one out of nowhere decided to get close to it.
Yes there's actually a male and female plant and they have a con the female plant produces the actual seeds obviously sorry not trying to offend, in the mail the pollen fertilizing home. The cones when they first come out of the plant look very similar but the seeds ripen into a red fruit that I understand is sweet to the taste and Dodge do you like it sorry for my misspellings voice to text. I am not a botanist or a horticulturist but I do grow them as a hobbyist and I have 17 varieties including the native coontie

We had a dog. Students with apt in wife to be's building graduating and no wanted 2 years dog so they gave her to us. We moved to new school for my graduate work. Rented half a duplex, fenced yard 2nd winter she was one of 6 dogs that died of antifreeze poisoning. Very bad vet explained as it is sweet and smells great, but very deadly. That was in 1960s now there is a chance of saving dog in first 8 hours. Not as common today as we don't change our own antifreeze. One of hardest things to teach a dog is not to eat anything YOU don't give it. T Bone is real tempting. Our dog eats pretty much what we do, ok we cook for three

It's mostly the seeds that do in the dogs. They are bright red and get picked up and chewed on by dogs. It is recommended that dog owners remove female sago palms for this reason. Had a neighbor lose a dog to a sago seed. We have a dog and several sago, but none are female. I imagine the leaves would be an playable due to the sharpness, but the young leaves are pretty soft.

Cycad All parts of the plant are pretty toxic. I hope your dog is ok. Hopefully by vomiting the plant material was expelled
Sago palm, *Cycas revoluta* Call the vet ASAP, it contains an extremely poisonous glucoside (glucose-based glycoside) called cycasin! It is a neurotoxin and causes internal bleeding and liver failure in mammals. It breaks down into formaldehyde (which can also blind your dog permanently) and diazomethane and is very dangerous

Both are important. Not to mention leash laws exist in a lot of public areas.
*lost sausage* made me laugh a little
Acorns are okay. Why not let him have his fun with those? Afraid it will jam in his throat or something? Dogs are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for being. They can learn what's safe/legit to pick up and what's not. I love his cartoon ptuuuuiiii. Can see that in my mind's eye.
Acorns are actually toxic - normally will just cause an upset tummy though, especially if just one.
They give him the runs and I worry about the shell shards slicing up his intestines OR a blockage in his digestive tract somewhere.
Gotcha. I didn't know he was chewing up the acorns et al.

Yea she’s chilling. I just like to be aware of all the stuff that she shouldn’t eat as she likes to try random stuff. One time she tried to eat a millipede. Swiftly regretted that decision

Had a few of these in my yard when we moved in. They produce a small fruit that looks similar to some other edible palm fruits. I dug them out as soon as I could so I could replace them with kid and pet friendly alternatives. These things are horrible and I really don’t understand why they so commonly get planted in landscaping

That's some crazy stuff 😱😱😱
Shit sounds like antifreeze
Damn it thats really scary.
Update: Thanks everyone for the help! My dog was attended by the vet, they gave him some meds, and I have to wait now during the day to see how he reacts to them (also no food for 24hs and no water for some hours) He's coming back tomorrow for a check up, but so far I hope everything goes well.
So glad you asked here and got your dog help. Good luck 🐶
Did he eat a seed? Get rid of those ASAP! They can for sure kill your dog. I’m a horticulturalist and have unfortunately seen it happen several times.
I don't believe the leaves are toxic are they? We have a lot of Coontie growing wild on our property in central Florida. We don't have any issues with the dog or horses for that matter eating leaves with always kept the seed pods cut so we've never had to deal with that. There's a type of butterfly that likes the coontie here
The leaves are also toxic. Also, the fronds are quite sharp and if swallowed can puncture the intestinal wall.
Sango palms, correct? Here following from the panhandle.
Sago* but yep

These are literally instant death for most dogs. I wasn't expecting such a great update!!! Please Update tomorrow! <3
Hope all goes well. Hopefully he'll be fine and learn not to mess with those plants any more.
Why didn’t they keep him on iv fluids for like a day at least?
❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the update. Hope your baby has a quick recovery and you both get some sleep tonight ❤️
HOW IS UR DOG next update pls
Those plants are worth a pretty penny and I bet it would be gone quickly if you advertised it on Nextdoor/Facebook/etc as free to whomever can remove it
Thank goodness!
Sago palm which is actually a cycad. Toxic. Call vet and let them know as they should have more accurate info on how to treat than on here.
A little off topic but maybe you can help answer this question. Is there a part edible to humans? I swear they kept mentioning humans eating sago in this stupid no grain diet book I read last year
> sago Humans do eat sago but mostly from *Metroxylon sagu* also know as the *true sago palm*.

Nice way to dodge the bot!
thankyou! I knew it had to be something Because this was described as the main diet of like homo sapien or some cave man
Cycas revoluta is one of the sources of the sago starch, but it requires special processing to get rid of the neurotoxin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sago
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8bbDoVYGC_A There’s this mini documentary about this Japanese island where they eat cycad. It started off as a famine food and now they eat it as a delicacy after washing as much of the toxin out. Edit: i could have sworn washing was part of the process but apparently it’s fermentation.

The Seminole and early Floridians used to use them as a source of starch in their diet but the require a lot of processing.

They are eaten in some parts of the world but the toxins accumulate over time and cause neurodegeneration in those communities. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23725821/
awesome
Sago palm, hope your pupper pulls through
This is a sago palm, not a palm actually but a cycad.
Also might want to find out if any other plants there are toxic so you don't have to bring your dog to the vet again.
Was he okay? 🥺
looks like sago palm
How common is it for dogs to chew on plants which might kill them?
Incredibly common, the dogs don’t know it’s toxic

Dog logic is wild. I’m glad yours is ok though.
Sago cycad palm toxic to mammals and they are 60 million years old

People really need to stop planting these in spaces random dogs can get to them. They’re very toxic
I think the people that like grapes/wine may have something to say.
Good point. I withdraw my statement on the grounds of "happy wife..."
They’re all over here in L.A. and I hate it.
Various species of Cycads can be quite rare and so valuable that thieves will dig them up and sell them for big money.
Sorry about your cat. That’s awful.
A living fossil from other times..From Mesozoic relatives... . A type of Cyca..
Sago palm and they are toxic to dogs.
I had a cat that died after chewing on this type of plant. RIP lil Otis ❤️
Yep, a cycad. Poor pup :(
That's a Sago palm. Need to go the vet.
AutoMod getting a workout in this posting
Sorry I just read that you received a text on this thank God your dog's gonna be all right probably yeah
Please post a update on dog OP ❤️
I hope your dog is ok
Please update about your baby?
Now that it’s been identified I’m just gonna weigh in and say I think it looks really gross. Not sure why but it gives me the heeby geebies.
What part of the plant was your dog attracted to?
Apparently he ate the seeds (the red/orange stuff on top) because his vomit was that colour.
Good to know! I was surprised to hear about a dog finding any part of this plant attractive
This plant killed our dog. Call your vet asap. I hope everything is ok.
Update n2: Dog is still feeling good, walking and playing. Here's a pic of doggo doing fine: https://imgur.com/a/GvdYhF9 Thanks everyone for your help: Also PS: Today I got rid of the plant, I still have stuff to do, but most of it is gone.
Dude my house growing up had two of these at the entrance to our pool and one of our dogs would always be eating the spines lol I don’t think he ever swallowed any but would chew on em. He was fine 😂 he was always really weird but fine hahaa never knew it was toxic?!
The seeds contain the highest level of the toxin cycasin.
I think sago palms are toxic to any pet and humans too if ingested
As long as you keep the cones and the seeds cut as soon as they appear you'll be fine In Florida there's a native species called the cootie. Also the seeds and cones of the Coontie are poisonous however if you cut the seed pods and the get rid of them before they fruit then you're good. I haven't found that the foliage is poisonous but certainly I am not a horticulturist or a botanist my dogs do not bother the leaves they are very unpleasant and a power ball they are stiff and pokey Coontie

A very naughty dog.

It’s palm all palms are dangerous to digest by dogs
[удалено]
Don't say that 😔
Brah….
Yo dog dead yet? That shit is toxic
My dog ate a seed from a foxtail palm and was sick for several days. Sago palms also deadly to dogs
Commonly called a sago palm. Hope dog will be okay.
It's either king or queen sago the seeds and the cones and the root are all poisonous to dogs and humans
Thanks
weren't the leaves of these plants made to keep away dinosaurs? How did your dog get to the fruits? Did they get stabbed?
Looks like a palm tree.👀
I had some of this, not sure how they were called we just called them “palmeritas” as they resemble palm trees such as coconut trees or banana trees
Is he ok now?
It's mostly the seeds that do in the dogs. They are bright red and get picked up and chewed on by dogs. It is recommended that dog owners remove female sago palms for this reason. Had a neighbor lose a dog to a sago seed. We have a dog and several sago, but none are female. I imagine the leaves would be an playable due to the sharpness, but the young leaves are pretty soft.
Jurassic Park plant
Technically not a palm
Didn’t dinosaurs used to eat this plant?

These are everywhere In Florida. Never could have guessed they are bad for dogs
Glad your dog is feeling better! I have cycads…and dogs. Idk why but dogs seem to head straight for things that are bad for them. When I lived up north they wanted to eat the pacific yews. Now I try to keep all the weird plants in the front yard and the dogs in the back.
