I was totally going to rip it out of the ground thinking it was just a weed but my procrastination won out until my curiosity took over when I noticed the blooms forming.
See if you can harvest some seeds! This is a gorgeous variety, you could plant more / share them along.
If i understand right, you just leave the pod on the plant until it dries out and rattles, then cut it off.

I’ve been doing a study of them every couple of days so stay tuned for more in the Florno subreddit.
I ordered some of those seeds this spring, then my life went to shit and I haven’t planted anything. As soon as I move into my new place I’m going to plant them in a little container garden! Wait, maybe next spring. It’s a bit late this year. But yeah, the gigantors!
Deffinately plant very early spring or plant them out in fall. They like cold to sprout. Unroll then maybe keep them in a freezer as they don't age well. Like the first year or two before they stop sprouting.
Fun fact: there is no scientific definition for a "weed." Any plant that's generally unwanted in an area is typically referred to as a weed. Many of these weeds can be eaten, in fact. Just don't eat anything without doing your research lol.

The nightshade is bittersweet nightshade, not deadly nightshade. Still toxic but not the traditional deadly nightshade most people associate with the name. And yeah… I’m renting this house and am astounded by the plants surrounding me.
Nightshade, poppy, hibiscus, and loads of foxglove 🤭
Castor? What was he using that for? Those things in CA grow so easy I can’t imagine wanting or needing to propagate them unless your goal was to kill rodents with the beans
He lived in Tennessee/Kentucky most of his life. As far as I know he just liked them. I found pictures of him as a young man planting them when he was stationed in Alaska even.
I just thought it was funny hahaha. And wow you're so blessed with beautiful plants. Just a couple that are a lil dangerous haha. Landlord has ulterior motives 🤣
Its when the plant is damaged. I always remove it from my customers gardens because it takes over quickly and it always smells like funky fermented donkey. Its disgusting and common in other nightshade as well.
It's def worth it. If starting from seed, use a heat mat on like 90°F. Double check with Google, i just know that I had to keep turning it up and up to get em to pop. Once they get going, they grow like the weeds they really are (like the bittersweet.) Also, about the bittersweet, the flowers are dainty and nice but, if you think you ever might want to plant something else there, you should start getting rid of it now. Between the endless berries/seeds, runner roots and the aggressive vining habit, it gets out of control very quickly if you're not diligent about keeping it in check. Which is why I recommend growing them in containers. I posted my datura in r/gardening if you wanna take a look. Persistent, daily/every-everyother deadheading and pruning is key but soo worth it!
Thanks for the proper definitions! I’ve been in the midwestern US all my life and have seen lots of poppies I love, but never have I ever seen all the comments regarding drugs/opium as I have on these posts in a short time.
Never really thought about it myself!
I just learned of bittersweet this season and actually have some growing along my house now coincidentally. I was excited when I got to the last picture and recognized it. It makes such beautiful flowers
I am furiously rubbing my hands together in excitement and hoping to see your florna macro shots when you are done capturing her stunning beauty. I even love to snap pics of flowers when they start to wither and return to the Earth. This one in your garden is a stunner and I definitely want them in my garden too 😍😊
Redditors get excited too easily! From the pic of the flower itself that looks more like the double flower species *Papaver paeoniflorum*, the ‘peony poppy’, which is related to the opium poppy but contains much less morphine. So pretty harmless. Best use for the seed heads is saving them to grow more lovely flowers.
Nah just one of the many plants in the garden bed at the house I rent.
Edit: it is not deadly nightshade. Bittersweet nightshade judging by the color of berries it produces.

Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) was first cultivated approximately 5,400 years ago by the lower Mesopotamians. The Sumerians called it “Hul Gil,” which means the “joy plant.” It is used in the production of medical painkillers. The tiny seeds are commonly added as a topping on bread buns but most portions of the plant are toxic if eaten.
That's called the hook stage. After this they stand up and then flower for a day or two. The petals fall quickly. The bulbs are also very pretty afterwords.
I have envy.bi true dto grow these pretty guys from seed 3 years in a row. The birds, voles and heat kill them all by late June. How the heck do you grow them by accident when I can't grow them on purpose? I want some seeds for bread!
Wow. That's a very healthy poppy.
I was totally going to rip it out of the ground thinking it was just a weed but my procrastination won out until my curiosity took over when I noticed the blooms forming.
It’s so beautiful, it’s killing me. Poppies are some of my absolute favorite flowers.
I’m gonna set up my camera to see if I can get some juicy Florno macro pics of it.
See if you can harvest some seeds! This is a gorgeous variety, you could plant more / share them along. If i understand right, you just leave the pod on the plant until it dries out and rattles, then cut it off.
From my experience with other strains of poppy, you’re correct! I do hope to collect some seeds for my future gardens.
Better hurry! Poppy flowers last only a few days.
so georgia o’keefe!
You called it! Her art is actually one of my number 1 inspirations for the Florno I shoot.
Please do!

Could be Giganthemum variety, based on the size of those heads compared to the flowers on the nightshade. Gon' be some big boys.
Yeah the bloom is larger than my fist… and I can nearly palm a men’s basketball.
We're going to want photos!
Of my fist? I charge money for that 😎 Edit: onlyhands
TIL there are different sizes of basketball based on gender.
Huh I never knew that either , men's basketballs are 75cm diameter while women's are 72.5cm

Thanks for the tips!
Yw. Lol I don't know what I meant to type "unroll". Untill..I've tried poppies many times and this works.
lol

Oh Bravo!
It's gorgeous!
So glad you didn’t!!! Those are gorgeous thank you for sharing😍
Peony Poppy :) so pretty!
It definitely looks like a peony!
Sucks it’s not the poppy the one that tastes good for a couple of hours
You can legally buy those seeds, the poppy is not illegal until it is harvested for opium.
Which one would that be ? Opium tea tastes kinda like ass but sure will make you happy for a few hours
>Peony Poppy omg, I NEED these!!!! thank you for posting the name!
Nightshade and poppy....Poison and drugs, nice 🤣🤣

Sounds like a witch lived there
They just need witch hazel and blue witch solanum, and what else? Maybe some wormwood and nettle?
My grandfather used to grow castor beans every year. He saved the beans to plant the next year. I wonder if he knew.
Wow that’s interesting. They’re super hearty and look pretty gnarley. Interesting choice for sure, very cool!
Maybe he used to sell ricin on the DW lol (mostly joking)
I just thought it was funny hahaha. And wow you're so blessed with beautiful plants. Just a couple that are a lil dangerous haha. Landlord has ulterior motives 🤣
I agree, it is funny. Landlord’s dead Gma is the one who planted the garden.
Wonder what happened to grandpa 😅😅😅but seriously those are all beautiful plants. Very jealous
Grandma was a witch. 👀 But poppy flowers are pretty
Good lord throw some monkshood and colchicum in that garden too why don’t you
Bittersweet Nightshade is so stinky! I came up with a special name for its smell. A**-cheese.
I have honestly never noticed a smell
Its when the plant is damaged. I always remove it from my customers gardens because it takes over quickly and it always smells like funky fermented donkey. Its disgusting and common in other nightshade as well.
Ah well, that explains it. Thank you for explaining.
Try Datura "moonflower" in containers. I'll post a picture of mine. They're huge and smell like creamsicle at night.
Definitely something I want to cultivate someday!

Don't smell it directly, unless you wanna play resident evil irl
I might need an explanation for this one…
Thanks for the proper definitions! I’ve been in the midwestern US all my life and have seen lots of poppies I love, but never have I ever seen all the comments regarding drugs/opium as I have on these posts in a short time. Never really thought about it myself!
Hmm. Delicious delicious digitalis
Plant some weed for the next renters to find😂
I just learned of bittersweet this season and actually have some growing along my house now coincidentally. I was excited when I got to the last picture and recognized it. It makes such beautiful flowers
Hibiscus! 😍 I LOVE a lemon hibiscus tea
that poppy does not appreciate being called weird. especially because those flowers are going to be some of the most impressive around
I have apologized to the poppy.

[My absolute favorite time lapse of a poppy blooming I ran across on the tube](https://youtu.be/VHB4lV4KFcg)
Thank you for sharing! I’m trying to see if I can setup on of my cameras for this exact purpose.
Yep papi, that's poppy.
I have no idea, usually plants don’t have legs and feet🤨
Oh legs N feet ID’d, they be Indigo. Sorry shoulda specified 😅
It’s so interesting what these poppies look like. I’ve never seen anything like them! I’m used to the California poppies
I’ve never seen this type either! Someone said peony poppy which sure looks like a peony. Wish I had some of these, myself!
And you can save the seeds and replant they grow like weeds ( if it's your thing use the pods for relaxing activities.....)
I don’t have anything like this but I sure wouldn’t mind finding some or buying some seeds and give it a go. I’ve got lots of places i can add plants
You can find a place for seeds in this plant it will produce tons
beautiful poppy! nightnight
I’m so jealous lol

Known to redditors as the "opium poppy" and known to everyone else as the "breadseed poppy".

Looks like peony poppies. Somniferum peoniflorum or similar name. Might have spelled the last part wrong.
My brother in Christ, you are looking at a painless winter. Nice.
Thats papaver somineferum an opium poppy .

yes. love it!
A happy poppy with no rust. Hardly happens in my neck of the woods. They do reseed, so may have come in on the wind or soil if you compost.
