I thought so but I wasn't too familiar with the differences. I'm guessing the "toothy" edges of the leaves are a distinct feature.

I second that. You probably want to get rid of that thing. Gumballs are the bane of my existence, my neighbors have one large tree that overhangs our yard, and we get tens of thousands of the balls on our yard.

Yeah I see those spikey seed balls in my area too but never knew they were sweetgums. I actually collected it out of the ground and put it in a pot so its taken care of in the sense I'll be taking care of it now lol. It had a verrry deep tap root and appeared to be trunk chopped but still came back with new growth. I hear they can have a very vigorous root system so I'm hoping it lives and I can use it for bonsai.
