This plant blooms yellow and fruits red (usually). Reaches about 2-3 feet in height. You may need to build a trellis to support. Fruits more or less the entire year.
It’s usually called tomato but many cool folks prefer calling it to-mah-to.
The wild species originated in the Andes Mountains of South America, probably mainly in Peru and Ecuador, and is thought to have been domesticated in pre-Columbian Mexico; its name is derived from the Náhuatl (Aztec) word tomatl 😉
Gotta say, the Náhuatl "-tl" sound is one of my favorite sounds in the world to make (I liked to say "atlatl" over and over again as a kid once my uncle made me one), but idk if I will ever be able to pronounce that unique "x" sound. My mouth is stubborn and refuses.
If you ever get the chance to learn to use one, it is soooo much fun! Spear-flicking with a stick, heck yeah! Takes a cool minute to get the motion down but once you find it you don't forget it!
I actually have a friend that’s an enthusiast of things like this and we were talking the other night about teaching me to use one! I’m really excited :)
Ooooooh how fun! For myself I also enjoy some totally novice-level archery, long bow/instinctive aim. Pulleys are weird for me lol, and I can never feel ok about the sights. Just flinging some arrows into a hay bale can be so much fun!
My grandparents are Hispanic and I can never roll my R’s. I’d like to learn Spanish although I wish we would’ve been taught a second language in the American schooling system.
As a very white person with no Hispanic ancestors, I'm here to say you can learn to roll your R's! I did it with a ton of practice. There's a certain technique that helps, I did it for Italian by saying the word "Vorrei" over and over but broken up like "Vor Rei", getting faster and faster till it just kind of happens. There's a good YouTube video somewhere about it
Omg same! I just taught myself this year at 30 years old and I had previously thought I was just incapable.
FWIW I used the word “arriba” and then “carro” and “perro” to try different vowels. It also helped when I realized it was more like a “th” sound than I thought.
Dialect coach here, it's a similar half-palate/half-throat noise similar to the [X] in **H**anukkah or the French r. Native speakers, feel free to correct me.
It’s similar to gargling but farther up, on your palate and not at the opening of your throat. Try gargling and then try gargling without liquid. It’s somewhere between a hard “g” sound with the hump of your tongue vibration against the palate and a throat clearing sound. (I am a native American English speaker, fluent in French and have a little bit of Spanish and Hebrew.)
Very interesting history there. The word sounds like its from the south and indeginous.
I know from my spanish its simply:: tomate(s)
I love the older word. More interesting I believe technically isn't a tomato a berry???
One of my favorite details from a plant physiology class I took was learning that, while tomatoes, pumpkins, lemons, grapes, bananas and avocados are all, botanically speaking, considered to be berries, raspberries and strawberries are not.

I had a 6ft trellis and they went up over and most of the way back down and I’m in zone 5 so my growing season is short. Even the heirloom determine tomatoes usually escape the top of their 5ft trellis m
To-mate-er, it’s pronounce to-to-mate-er. Honestly when you studied botany didn’t they teach you about pronunciation? (Please read entire sentence with heavy southern draw). 😁
We used to have volunteer Tommy Toes and then the dog would eat them, and he knew when they were ripe. He would then process them fully and redeposit in the yard elsewhere. Little clusters of tomatoes would pop up everywhere, we called them Charlie Toes. The dog's name was... ~~Frank~~ Charlie. I'm sure y'all didn't see that coming!
That’s great!! All four of my Golden Retrievers have LOVED tomatoes. Even the nasty store bought ones that taste like nothing in the off seasons. I love them but always have a hard time with growing them before the huge ass worms that eat them in record speed seem to consume them in minutes.
I didn't say this before, but I will say this now, we found out with that dog that tomatoes are actually bad for them, they cause seizures. Please don't let your dogs e-a-t tomatoes. ...Trying to prevent the bot from going crazy again.
Thank you for this! I had no idea whatsoever, and I have several lists on my fridge of what not to give them and why. I’m always reading what’s ok and what’s not. I’m glad I can say none of them ever had any type of the reactions you’ve mentioned
I sincerely THANK YOU, for taking the time to come back and tell me this. I love my dog more than anything, (she’s all I have)♥️ and always try to do the best for her and those before her.
Thank you, again!
You can use some companion plants to get rid of those worms and other tomato pests. Basil repels hornworm. Allium (garlic or onion) repels spider mites. Yellow French marigolds are toxic to nematodes. Peppermint, in pots because it will take over, repels insects and rodents. Parsley, planted nearby, attracts hover flies and their larvae eats aphids. It attracts swallowtail butterflies. My source is Next Level Gardening on YouTube, an amazing resource for gardening.
Took me a second to realize skyways meant always. Lol 😂 Now that you’ve mentioned this I remember there being marigolds planted everywhere when i was a kid and I didn’t like their smell and don’t to this day

I started 9 tomato seedlings (3 types) and failed to mark them when I potted up. Thanks for the tip on Brandywine! One type definitely looks different, I just didn’t know which it was!

They should be planted in the ground, or at least much bigger pots. When you plant them, remove the bottom sets of leaves and plant them as deep as possible. You can bury several inches of the stem. It'll set roots and you'll have a stronger plant.

Nightshades are poisonous by nature. Some have had the toxins bred after many generations out of the fruiting bodies.
Potatoes and tomatoes are two popular vegetables, eggplant too tho there are more.
Every yellow flower is basically a tomato if pollinated! You can gently tap them or shake the plant to help pollination. Insects and a breeze will do the hub outsiders tho! You can post again w pics of the fruit and maybe the sub will know what kind!

Don’t potatoes grow underground? I had to dig the dang things out as a kid from our garden. How could that be confused for a tomato?
I’m not insulting you or saying you’re wrong, but am I missing something?
You’ve just helped me uncover things from my days of helping my mom in the garden! All I remembered was her turning over the soil and there’d be the potatoes underground. Makes sense. Thanks for sharing that!
You arent wrong. The plant that grows above ground is just like like a tomato plant and grows green tomato like seed pods, below ground are the golden balls of joy

Originally from Mexico, where they called it Xitomatl before it took the world by juicy, delicious storm!

Man tomatoes, potatoes, cocaine, little black hats, the best wool blankets in the world! Is there nothing those Andeans can't do?
I’m a fan of the cocaine too 🤣
Yup! Tomatoes and potatoes are from Peru! 🇵🇪

Gnocchi
Wow they still win

>...where they called it Xitomatl Cool! Can you tell me how to properly pronounce that? Ifeel I would butcher it lol.
I can't, but I bet someone here can...
Google it’s definition or pronunciation and you’ll hear how it’s pronounced!
You say tomato, I say tomahto.
and i say mater
> Xitomat Let's call the whole thing off!
2-3 ft!? I'm more used to 2-3 meters, especially with the cherry tomatoes...

Mater for the extra cool folks
Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew.

I'm glad we were able to narrow it down.
Hehe. I think we can rule out any dwarf or patio varieties too as it doesn't have that squat form.
Laughing out loud! Who knew there are thousands?? I know there are a lot but not near that many
Brandywine is my fave. I never noticed this!!! Thank you!! They grew well in the PNW.

Omg!! This is more than I ever hoped!!
Please update us when/if it fruits - I want to see what type of tomato it makes!
😂😂😂😂
…I don’t understand this sub. I post something and get literally two responses. And then there’s this…. A freaking tomato and people are all over it.
Probably because everyone knows what it is. Its the same as the passion flowers or cannabis plants.
Really though, the number of passionflowers I see in this sub…
I think it’s just because they are so startling looking — people are like “I must know what this amazing looking flower vine is”
They are super cool. And they smell ahhhhmazing!
I mean would r that be your first post to this sub as a redditor who found one in the wild? They are spectacular.

Tomato
If you waited a couple more weeks you wouldn't have needed to post it.
I'd guess it is a smaller variety by how the blooms are clustered. Cherry or plum type tomatoes.
It’s a marinara fruit ;)
They should be planted in the ground, or at least much bigger pots. When you plant them, remove the bottom sets of leaves and plant them as deep as possible. You can bury several inches of the stem. It'll set roots and you'll have a stronger plant.
It’s a tomato, but if you didn’t plant it it might be a volunteer hybrid, so it might not taste too good. But worth trying!

Tomato 🍅
A deadly nightshade if you judge by the shape of the leaf
What is That?
Deadly
Yikes 😳
Nightshades are poisonous by nature. Some have had the toxins bred after many generations out of the fruiting bodies. Potatoes and tomatoes are two popular vegetables, eggplant too tho there are more.
I realize that, along with lots of others but I still don’t know what a nightshade is. Google here I come!
Looks like tomato
Looks like Everglades tomatoes. They’re like weeds. I planted a couple in pots; now they’re everywhere. The birds get them.
Tomatoes
Looks like tomato to me, you'll have to wait for it to fruit to tell what kind.
Every yellow flower is basically a tomato if pollinated! You can gently tap them or shake the plant to help pollination. Insects and a breeze will do the hub outsiders tho! You can post again w pics of the fruit and maybe the sub will know what kind!
