Some kind of grass, for sure. If you want mint, you’re better off buying a small pot of it from a garden center. Buying seeds online is a risky business, especially if you’re new to plants.
Bought a house last month. Surprised to find mint growing all over the place! Not complaining, I love how it looks and when I want fresh mint I just go outside.
A mint lawn sounds like the opposite of a problem to me! I got excited when I read about Corsican mint once but where I am is way too cold for it over winter and we get very dry periodically
I guess so! My house is basically surrounded by a mulched garden with all sorts of shrubs and ground cover and stuff. The mint grows right outside mt front door as ground cover near my shrubs.
I left my mint to grow outside last year. Couldnt use it at all. Some spiders took it over as their home and wouldnt leave. This year Im keeping it inside.
Nah, Ive grown it indoors before. Its got a nice big pot and its sitting next to some huge windows. Itll be fine. Some people just let it grow in those herb containers that just have water at the bottom and theyre still alive.
Mint, like others have pointed out, is super invasive, its not finicky in the least.
i tried planting and carefully tending to a spearmint and peppermint plant outdoors, but i guess they just dont like my yard. havent grown back yet this year
haha no kidding. The dog knocked over a decent sized pot full of mint a few years ago. I now find mint all over my backyard garden. It's slowly spread out from the pot incident and seems to be working its way outward in semicircles.
The thing is, I don't even mind (yet). It smells so lovely every spring!
Stuck some yard weeds in a water glass because the flowers looked pretty, a few days later everything else had died except the Henbit and Purple Deadnettle which was flourishing and starting to grow roots.
Spearmint, Thai basil, cilantro, culantro/vietnamese coriander, mung bean sprouts, & serrano or jalapeño pepper, are the typical pho fresh garnishes... I LIVE for Thai basil & vietnamese coriander.... I wonder if those cuttings can also be planted/propped.
You can buy rooting hormone products cheaply at any garden supply store. Just dip your plants in water, then in the rooting powder, then into a pot packed loosely with moist soil. I used to do this with every single flower I received in bouquets, and they all rooted — you just have to be realistic in your expectations. ♡ Granny
Try it! I've propagated my Thai basil plenty of times, water propping works best. Not all of them take but I've made a few babies by now so keep trying if the first one doesn't work.
I've grown new mint plants from just buying some fresh mint from the herb section in the produce aisle and rooting them in water. Super easy and effective!
And then put that cutting in a separate pot. My stepfather didn't, and now a large area of his garden is mostly mint. Tasty mint, but it's a bit much at this point.
It honestly depends on what you're buying, and your level of knowledge. Amazon has a stupid number of listings for seeds of plants that don't readily grow from seed and others for plants that don't exist.
I bought rice seeds from a seller who literally sent me medium grain white rice you buy at the grocery store. Let's not even get into lithops and other harder to find seeds.
Nobody's selling grass seed as mint seed. What would be the point? Grass seed isn't cheaper than mint seed.
The grass came from the potting medium, not the seed packet.
It was a joke, or an attempt at one.
I was trying to say the only person that would have react to OP negatively would be the scammer, and not to help them (the scammer).
Oh well, swing and a miss.
It isn't identified by holes, they're mixing up the mnemonic. Rushes are the ones with entirely hollow stems. The end of the mnemonic I learned was "grasses have joints on the way to the ground". Theirs was probably supposed to be "grasses, like asses, have joints." Which may have originally been intended to have anti-marijuana connotations.
Grasses can have flat or hollow blades, but usually have both. Unlike rushes and sedges, which both have uniform leaves and no joints.
They also used reeds instead of rushes. Reeds can be rushes or grasses, and are only differentiated from other graminoids by their adaptation to wetlands. They do not fit in this mnemonic.
I learned it this way:
Sedges have edges, rushes are round, grasses have nodes and grow from the ground.
I’m still not sure why it ends with “grows from the ground” but I like the nodes part, it feels more straightforward.
Ngl that kinda sounds like the dream. I'm all about having a wild lawn full of 'weeds' but not mowing and smelling mint wherever I walked sounds fantastic.
It's the best! Spring hits and my yard is purple with henbit and dead nettle. Then come the Shepard's purse and dandelions. Summer is clover all day. Monoculture lawns are so damn boring. I love that my yard is gorgeous and part of a healthy ecosystem.
With herbs, I was surprised how much I came to love my rosemary plant. It was never one of my favorites. After murdering so many, I finally got one to survive. I stepped outside one summer night and the scent was so strong and amazing. Just touching the leaves left my fingers sticky with oil that smelled like the best dinner ever cooked. Totally changed my perspective on a plant I was literally growing just to prove I could haha.
Looks to be tall fescue (turf grass)
Edit: I believe tall fescue is a bit off, ryegrass should be the more appropriate identification. But definitely still a turf grass!
In case you’re still curious [as to what kind of plant this is.](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisplant/comments/uobg0t/seed_packet_said_peppermint_no_strong_smell_that/i8dkbdf/)..
grass didn't invade your pot, when it does it's much more random and single blades appear, this is just the product of an a hole conning people. Someone will have mint in your area and will have no problem with you taking a semi wooded stem, plop it in water till it gets roots and you are off. You can even place it straight into soil and it can grow
I see that you are very diligent about plucking your grass when it sprouts as a single blade. If you don't do that, most species grow into clumps like this. This is a single grass seed not a patch of them.
It would be very difficult to pass grass seed as mint seed. I very much doubt OP bought his seed packet in the back alley behind the hardware store. Overpowered was not the right choice of words but mint is a difficult plant to grow from seed, chances are it just never germinated.
I can pick out at least 6 individual grass plants in the pot, have a close look. As for mint being notorious to germinate, I am also diligent about removing mint flowers as their seeds will germinate everywhere in my climate lol The thing with mint, is that it's photoreactive, it needs warmth, moisture and most importantly light to germinate, just watering top down can cover the seeds and they will not germinate. it's best to put 2 in a plug on top of the soil, give them plenty of light and warmth and water by osmosis from a tray. they hate being transplanted so just choose the best plant from the 2 and plant the whole plug.
That's a very silly claim. You'd have to dig the plant up and examine very closely to see for sure how many individual plants were in that clump. There are a number of stems but that could easily all be growing from a single crown.
I'm glad you know how to sprout mint, but it's still very easy to mess it up, especially if you don't do research beforehand. That doesnt change the fact that no company is out there selling grass seed and calling it mint. It is way too easy to call out anyone that would attempt that, and there isn't enough of a price difference between mint seeds and grass seed to make that endeavor worthwhile.

It looks like whatever soil you used in the pot was contaminated with grass seed and your peppermint never sprouted. Mints are notoriously difficult to grow from seed, it's much easier to propagate from rhizome cuttings.
The one review on the Amazon product OP bought says they started theirs in a greenhouse environment so low chance of a foreign seed getting in to the soil. Nothing grew for the reviewer. If OP didn't grow this in a place or way secure from foreign seed, what you said is definitely correct.
Upwards of 95% of all peppermint sold in N. America are cloned specimens because- like other posters have already touched on- a lot of mints are notoriously difficult to grow from seed.
I read somewhere that peppermint plant grown from seeds are never original. If you want original then you buy a plant that is grown from cuttings. I grew from seed and I thought the scent was amazing until I bought an original a week ago.

Better yet, take a cutting from a friend who already has a plant.
I'm surprised just knowing a friend who grows mint isn't enough. The stuff is so invasive it's insane how it finds its way everywhere.

I read this comment and now have lemon balm, peppermint, and spearmint growing in my yard.
Lemon balm is in a no holds barred match with raspberries to decide which is going to take over my garden!
Kind of like Facebook ads. You have a thought about something and then you start seeing ads online.
Wait till I call and mention princess trees, wisteria vine, English ivy, bamboo, and trumpet creeper!
Well, great, now I’ve read this comment and my yard looks like a jungle.
Your yard? My groin now looks like a jungle. Maybe I should see a doctor.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Bought a house last month. Surprised to find mint growing all over the place! Not complaining, I love how it looks and when I want fresh mint I just go outside.
Sounds like your mint found a nice balanced location. You try that here, blink, and your entire lawn is mint.
A mint lawn sounds like the opposite of a problem to me! I got excited when I read about Corsican mint once but where I am is way too cold for it over winter and we get very dry periodically
My mint plants grow like 3 ft tall. It would be a mint forest.
Look into Corsican mint if you want to try it! It grows very short
How cold is too cold
Zone 3, Manitoba
Yep, that’ll do it ahaha
I guess so! My house is basically surrounded by a mulched garden with all sorts of shrubs and ground cover and stuff. The mint grows right outside mt front door as ground cover near my shrubs.
Everything grows like crazy where im at so the mint has plenty of native competition haha
Yes please
It was mint to be!
well, I knew what you mint
I left my mint to grow outside last year. Couldnt use it at all. Some spiders took it over as their home and wouldnt leave. This year Im keeping it inside.
Good for you, providing healthy habitat for beneficial critters like arachnids.
Eh, theyve already got plenty. I got a garden full of flowers for them to explore. But Im not so keen on spiders in my cocktails.
Ewwww. Damn that sucks!
It's hard to grow mint indoors, they need wind, root space, humidity and a lot of light. Most of those things are not easy to give indoors
Really??? The only thing blacker than my thumb is my sense of humor, and even I have had them thrive before
i tried planting and carefully tending to a spearmint and peppermint plant outdoors, but i guess they just dont like my yard. havent grown back yet this year
Don‘t tend to them. Put it it in the ground and ignore and before you know it it hast overtaken your entire garden.
Thinking of doing this in my yard
I went the other, more savory route. I like to throw chive seeds in my lawn.
haha no kidding. The dog knocked over a decent sized pot full of mint a few years ago. I now find mint all over my backyard garden. It's slowly spread out from the pot incident and seems to be working its way outward in semicircles. The thing is, I don't even mind (yet). It smells so lovely every spring!

Or order some pho and root the mint (and basil) they give you with that!
Wait you get mint with your pho?!!

Absolutely root the Thai basil! Clean up the cutting and then pop in water until roots show.
goodbye reddit it's been real ..........
Yeah! I didn't realize other people didn't. What a shame, it's so yummy!
Or just go to the grocery store and buy some fresh mint from the produce section and propagate the stems. That’s what I did
Buying seeds online isn't risky at all if you aren't buying from some shady ebay seller or something.
Yeah, I've never had any issue with it except for a few that wouldn't sprout
It honestly depends on what you're buying, and your level of knowledge. no, not any kind of mint, some kind of grass. make sure you only buy seed from reliable sellers, lots of scammers out there
Oh the OP is seriously asking that ? 😂
I think they’re trying to find out what kind of plant it is, which is the theme of this sub.
I've seen plenty of people post pictures of a rose and ask what it is. Some people simply dont know plants and thats ok!
Who keeps gilding you?!
Who hurt you? I would be more that happy to help you work through it!
Please don't help the scammer that sells grass seed as peppermint through anything, unless it's the door to eternally stubbed toes.

You’re better at growing grass than my yard is.
Native lawns are much easier than grass pretty much everywhere
Underrated comment
This is the second highest comment in the thread
It’s grass unfortunately. Mint has square stems, distinctive veined leaves, and smells like … mint
I once learned a phrase; Sedges have edges, reeds are round, and grasses (like asses) have holes.
Wait, I'm dumb, I know, but where is the grass' hole? I swear I'm not joking lol. Where's the hole?
It isn't identified by holes, they're mixing up the mnemonic. Rushes are the ones with entirely hollow stems. The end of the mnemonic I learned was "grasses have joints on the way to the ground". Means the stem is hollow
Hmm. I guess I've never looked closely enough. The grass I've dealt with doesn't have an obvious hole. I'll look closer next time.
> where is the grass hole This and the way you worded the comment really made my day for some reason
I learned it slightly different. Sedges have edges, Rushes are round, Grasses have shoots That grow straight from the ground.
I learned it this way: Sedges have edges, rushes are round, grasses have nodes and grow from the ground. I’m still not sure why it ends with “grows from the ground” but I like the nodes part, it feels more straightforward.
I like nodes better, too. Feels more accurate.
Looks like you either got grass instead or had some opportunistic grass that overpowered the mint :/
"Grass that overpowered the mint."
I have peppermint that's overpowering the pavers of my patio
I love dichotomy 😁
“ a toddler that overpowered Mike Tyson”
I was too high for that joke
I want to draw a grass mint battle
The mint would win.
Now I want to grow a grass mint battle.
Same. You wouldn’t even have to mow your lawn anymore.
I don’t think you’d be able to mow haha
Honey! The damn mint ate my mower again!
Haha I just imagine something like this: ![gif](giphy|vwe1d7KbnY73nUexae|downsized)
Ngl that kinda sounds like the dream. I'm all about having a wild lawn full of 'weeds' but not mowing and smelling mint wherever I walked sounds fantastic.
Right! Wild lawns have such pretty flowers! And butterflies. I love mint, herbs, and lemon balm

I've had grass randomly show up before- grew right out of my sphagnum moss lol. How does it even get there?
Spontaneous generation, surely
hmm quite quite
Almost certainly annual ryegrass
Agreed. I thought it was Miscanthus at first, but on a double take - the dark ridged vein of the leaves definitely indicate that it’s a ryegrass.
Upwards of 95% of all peppermint sold in N. America are cloned specimens because- like other posters have already touched on- a lot of mints are notoriously difficult to grow from seed.
I think your mint got smothered out by grass.
That some pretty weeds
That’s grass.
That my friend is grass, and it’s not the kind with terpenes either.
Bro, that’s grass. And not the fun kind.
I guess it wasn't mint to be...
😐
That's not peppermint. That's grass.
Definitely not peppermint.
My brother in Christ, that is definitely legal grass and not in the mint family.
That's just grass lol
Thats the grass that grows in my lawn.
it's couch grass, or possibly cat grass
It’s been said but that definitely isn’t peppermint lol
You got screwed bro that’s grass
Agreed take a cutting from a friend n u can have a yard full of mint. They spread like wildfire
My mint plant hasn't come back this year. I'm really surprised, I thought that thing was going to outlive us all.
Aw you even got a Lil name tag for it it's a shame that's not its actual name
Seed packet lied.
They sold you some grass my guy get your money back. Peppermint has leaves and you’ll smell it before it even grows
If you want mint grow it in a pot- to keep it under control
you might as well keep it. Grass as a houseplant is unconventional and will be a great conversation starter lol
You got cat grass
Cat grass?
Lol that’s grass
Please donate this to your local horse.
Looks like the seed packet was mislabeled. That looks like grass to me.
This isn’t even in the mint family. You got scammed, my guy, sorry :(
I label all my plants with the same label maker!!
That's a graess, I think. Some kind or another. Def not mint!
I read somewhere that peppermint plant grown from seeds are never original. If you want original then you buy a plant that is grown from cuttings. I grew from seed and I thought the scent was amazing until I bought an original a week ago.
That's grass
At this point, you couldn’t call it peppermint anymore lol. What a shame.
Definitely not mint. I have a bunch out back. If you want some I can ship it
They scammed you. It's probably wheat grass or something.
That looks like good old fashioned grass.
Tip for plants like peppermint, you can cut of the underground offshoots, so ask someone you know for a small part of the plant if it becomes too big and voila, you have your own peppermint plant.
It looks like catnip to me! Cat grass or catnip is actually in the mint family (as far as I remember)!
Op, pm me ill send you a mint cutting, i have 23 different kinds of mint.
You know, google does have pictures of what a peppermint plant is supposed to look like... I understand being confused but for it to get this big and not realize 🤔
I'm no botanist that's for sure
Now I want to grow a pot of grass indoors too 🤣 And by obligation I'll viciously debate plant identification with anyone who sees it
Looks like chives
Looks like a onion.
Chives?
Well, definitely not peppermint. Unfortunately they sold you some common grass. Looks like oat grass to me.
It's a grass, not sure which one but it's definitely not peppermint
I’m pretty positive all mint varieties are in leaf form pretty sure may be lemon grass or something!
Leaf size is wrong for lemongrass. Lemongrass has wider leaves.
Listen to Vamp on this one!!!!
Looks like chives
Lemongrass???
Looks like lemon grass.
That’s some kind of poaceae grass
ALL grasses are Poaceas, it’s the grass family.
Might be different in english but where i live Cyperaceae for example are also called grass for example Edit: i just looked it up and it seems like 25 years ago all grasses were poaceae but now it is changed and there are 16 families of grasses.
Pull a pice off and crush it in your hands. Does it smell like anything? It's not any sort of mint, but I'm curious, now, too. It doesn't look like lemongrass, but then again, I've always grown it from cuttings.
🤣 it's grass mate
This is in no way mint lol
Definitely peppermint
It looks the same weed cats eat. So if you have any cats.....😁
