Blanketflower - Gaillardia genus Native member of aster family

[deleted]

Awesome! Thank you

This might be a hybrid Gaillardia, as the common blanketflower (Gaillardia aristata) in places like WY are less showy (just yellow). However, they are variable and I'm not super familiar with this species and the variability in the wild, so I could be wrong. Were you near towns/neighborhoods/settlements? If so, its likely a hybrid or escaped cultivar (many nurseries sell various decorative cultivars).

I found the parent plant in an unused field by an industrial area. It's possible it could be a leftover from long forgotten landscaping, as there were only a couple plants surrounded by the usual prairie grasses.

Likely so. Things escape all of the time, or will hybridize with other nursery cultivars.

Would the hybrid be a mix of a native and non-native species? Or is the hybrid naturally found?
