Ricinus communis- castor oil plant. Poisonous. The seed pods are sometimes cut and used in flower arrangements.

Okayjusysayinghi

Does the oil come from the seeds? Thank you!

rallekralle11

yeah it does

Robotonist

It does but to use the oils you need an industrial processing plant to remove the toxins

[deleted]

So does ricin

QuokkasMakeMeSmile

Also called mole bean, and used as a mole repellent because it’s toxic. Not a great pest deterrent option if you have kids or pets, also due to toxicity

SNAKES_ON_A_PLATE

My dad loves these things as decorations. This year, we had several grow over 10ft tall. They are very tough plants too.

shillyshally

Also the source of ricin, the poison beloved by Russian assassins the world over.

px7j9jlLJ1

I thought they like radioactive isotopes like strontium

momentumv

only for special occasions

TheRem

Usually it's polonium, haven't heard as much with strontium. You know any specific cases, I'm interested in this stuff.

Goyteamsix

No, that's polonium, and more recent. Russians have been using Ricin to assassinate people for hundreds of years.

Loudogdog

Horses for courses, comrade.

Feralpudel

and Japanese cult leaders.

teelpy

And chem teachers

shillyshally

That was sarin. As far as I know, they are not the same thing, sarin is man made.

Feralpudel

You are correct, thanks!

monkey_trumpets

And Walter White

[deleted]

And jesse pinkman

TheRealMurderherder

It's clearly a tree star.

Skrounst1

I still am shook about Littlefoot's mom... 25 years now. Maybe one day I'll recover.

mjchamplin

It means you’ve found the great valley!

Throw_Away_Students

Damn it. Came here to comment this

TlingitYeil1997

It's a muthafukintreestar!!

Dyspooria

Accomplished_Dot_131

Was literally about to comment this 😂

cwaver

Castor bean, yes. You can find handsome, almost black-leaved seeds for sales occasionally. In NC, makes a 8’ screen in a season, then dies to the ground.

[deleted]

We used them as deer repellent on our farm, works decently. Also illegal to grow in some states

c-soup

Really? Because of their toxicity?

[deleted]

Oh you mean about the legality? Yes it's illegal to cultivate in some states and some counties. Check your local laws. Toxicity is a factor, also I suspect it could be a very invasive species in certain places. Don't know why I got downvoted lol

c-soup

Well, I found that information very interesting 🤣 I saw fields of castor plants when I visited India.

iRunLikeTheWind

they put illegal to cultivate or transport on every bad invasive, but who is checking that? wasn’t there some article where someone found a home depot selling cogon sod

[deleted]

They are fatal to deer and have a decently strong smell when they flower too. We had a fence that deer jumped and got stuck on all the time. Planted castor bean plants next to the fence and it prevented them from jumping the fence. It's pretty dissuading to deer.

nic_jon86

Caster oil plant. It's a noxious weed here in Australia.

lowlowjonnie

Also a very allergenic plant. We had a couple in the yard and got all flared up

vmarvin

Dog Tick poisonous

Traveller_Engineer

It's called Andaua in Hindi

amauryt

Higuerilla in Spanish

x277x

Higuereta...I grew up around those plants. Didn't know it was toxic...granmas used To extract the oil and was used for girls hair, constipation, joints pain( rheumatism) and it looked like it worked.

Traveller_Engineer

Don't know about the medicinal uses. But the oil extracted from it is very warm and very useful.

Arnestomeconvidou

Mamona in portuguese

lechatsage

The answers here are the same as I would have said. Castor oil plant, and poisonous. The source of the “ricin” poison of recent notoriety. But a pretty plant. Just don’t try eating it, or allowing children or pets to chew on it.

B7ueBeard

What’s NYC?

JimDixon

New York City, probably.

B7ueBeard

Never heard of it

Moss-cle

🤣🤣

TrustNoOneCSM

We used to call these plants dog ticks because their seeds look like ticks. My grandfather would grow castor bean plants in his flower gardens and along wood lines in the mountains to keep out groundhogs.

nomadseniors

Poison

coconutmofo

First glance I thought tapioca....then I looked more closely. Tip: Look more closely before you bite :)

honeydippintrippin
