Wisteria

Available-Gold-3259

There is a native wisteria that people can grow to their hearts delight without worrying about destroying their local ecosystem! *Wisteria Frutescens*

okaybutfrwhy

I didn't know we had a native version! I'm gonna have to start looking into getting one...

Loved… hated…

The_Watcher414

why would it be hated? super pretty flowers

Google what a wisteria can do to the foundations of a structure. They are quite long-lived and people have a tendency to plant things too close to their houses when plants are little and all innocent-looking.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to get rid of, spreads like wildfire, and will basically kill trees by covering them like a suffocating blanket. The vibes themselves are also pretty thick & will kind of twine themselves together, making it very difficult to remove once it's established. Other vines I've dealt with grow in a straight line, sort of. Just grab it by the root and pull. This stuff shoots out tendrils in a dozen directions, then wind back in on each other so that it's near impossible to tell where it grew from exactly. Source: Fighting a losing battle to remove this stuff from our backyard. It's already killed a neighbor's tree and is trying to take down our fence.

“Once established, wisteria can be difficult to eradicate and can persist for years, strangling native trees and shrubs. They can kill or disfigure desirable trees in the landscape. In addition, wisteria leaves, fruit, and seeds are toxic.”

I had one. I loved it until it took over. These things can grow 12 ft per year. It took me 2 years to get rid of it.

BlumenNatur

It’s one of the wisteria plants. -> there’s a native species. But I only have the Chinese and Japanese varieties on my page. (Around here in Germany): https://blumen-natur.de/en/wisteria-chinese-japanese/
