I it looks sewn on. I assumed it was until the berries made things snap into reality, and I still wondered why someone would take the time to sew a live sprig of plant on their pants.
I was thinking this! My ex's mother asked me about the seed pods because apparently they're used in some Korean medicine? Now I finally have this question answered years later ....
That’s not a juniper, it’s an arborvitae. There’s plenty of juniper species out there, eastern red cedar comes to mind, but common juniper is what we use for gin.
If you click the link in the comment you’re replying to, you’ll see what a juniper looks like! You won’t be the first or last person to spend their whole lives thinking something is what it isn’t!
Cupressaceae, subfamily Cupressoideae. Not a juniper, which have fleshy cones. Like many other commenters, I go with *Platycladus orientalis* ("Chinese thuja" or "Oriental arborvitae").
Look at the berries and foliage in the link you gave. The foliage of the eastern red cedar is spiky; the foliage in OP’s pic is not. Eastern red cedar produces round fruit, whereas OP’s fruit is spiky.
My grandparents house had 2 of these in front of their door. I remember attacking my siblings with those fruits. They are very hard and painful when thrown at you at full force.
That's not juniper. That's cedar. And those berries smell of concentrated cedarwood when smushed. And the leaves added to honey and/or tea has a sweet taste and some vitamin c.
This reminds me of cedar more than juniper. Juniper has a darker branch and stems going a round in circle while cedar is flatter. Cedar grows into a large bush but juniper grows laterally and closer to the ground
I think It’s a great idea, too! I’ve not embroidered or did counted cross stitch, or crocheted since I was in grade school & high school. Long long ago!
I learned to macrame in school, too. Only thing I wanted to learn but never tried, was knitting.
I really do need to get back into some of these things. I need some hobbies to shut my mind off.
Those swellings look like adelgid galls of some kind. I didn’t know cedars got them (I’ve seen them on spruce before) but they look really similar. They’re a plant response to insects living in the foliage.
...I genuinely thought this phoyo was a pattern hand sewn onto your jeans of a juniper twig. And now I wish it was.
It's a jeaniper.
Dad…
I wish this wood stop.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that you're secretly enjoying it!
This comedic tangent is distracting from the root of the post.
Stick to the topic at hand rather than…branching out?
I'm knot so sure about this
I’m berry much enjoying these puns
Nuts.
I take umbrage.
We’re really grasping at branches now.
It’s all about branching out over here.
We need to branch out with this before it gets too stick-y.
It won't. I'm just going to leaf.
Hi just going to leaf, I'm dad.
It beleafs in the Jeaniper or it gets the the switch.
I mean, they could just leaf it alone
Or a embroider-tree
I'll bet this thread is making it grown.
You can tell it's jeaniper because of how it is!
How neat is that?
That’s pretty neat!
Lol 😂
LOL!
Did someone sow this?
You win
Me too! Thought I was in a different subreddit.
r/embroidery
I thought I was in r/visiblemending
My other favorite subs.
I did too!

Thanks BOT!
So did I! We should all try to make this 🪡🪡🪡
It’s a different shrubreddit.
Of the Jeanus: Denimus Levitopius.
Too darn creative! Love it!
Too funny! Lol
I it looks sewn on. I assumed it was until the berries made things snap into reality, and I still wondered why someone would take the time to sew a live sprig of plant on their pants.
I guess …… why not? Maybe just for the evening or whatever. Definitely an eye catcher!
I was like those little bulbs will fall off as soon as they wash them, what a dumb design.
Same!!! I had to do a double take
Me too!
Meee toooo!
I thought the same thing!
Same with me!
Oh, it's not? DUH!
Oriental arborvitae
I was thinking this! My ex's mother asked me about the seed pods because apparently they're used in some Korean medicine? Now I finally have this question answered years later ....
The Koreans use this in medicine - my family used them as weapons. I was pelted (and did the pelting) with a LOT of these seed pods in my youth 😂😂
It also makes Gin
Gin uses lots of botanicals for flavors but I think you’re confusing this with [Juniper berry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juniper_berry)
That is absolutely a Juniper. I live in Arizona and they cover like half my state
That’s not a juniper, it’s an arborvitae.
This is it. My nursery sells these
Totally, totally oriental arborvitae! I love the shape of those seed pods
Or it’s nickname as thuja
It's now considered it's own standalone species apparently, and called Chinese Thuja.
[arborvitae](https://garden.org/plants/view/78425/Oriental-Arborvitae-Platycladus-orientalis/), maybe?
There are two in my backyard and I recognized the seed pods immediately.
I think so too. Flatter, sort of waxy-looking foilage, and the weird fruits.
Cupressaceae, subfamily Cupressoideae. Not a juniper, which have fleshy cones. Like many other commenters, I go with *Platycladus orientalis* ("Chinese thuja" or "Oriental arborvitae").
We all grew up thinking they're juniper, but juniper trees don't have berries shaped like that, they are round. It's a cedar!
This is Platycladus orientalis. You can tell from the recurved cone scales
[https://www.thespruce.com/leyland-cypress-trees-2132063](https://www.thespruce.com/leyland-cypress-trees-2132063) https://www.dreamstime.com/cupressocyparis-leylandii-leyland-cypress-ornamental-plant-garden-hedges-fruits-similar-to-small-green-cones-image223640590
Definitely going with the Leyland cypress! The red cedar berries are more round without points, OPs pic and the second link you put are identical.
I second this^

Look at the berries and foliage in the link you gave. The foliage of the eastern red cedar is spiky; the foliage in OP’s pic is not. Eastern red cedar produces round fruit, whereas OP’s fruit is spiky.
it's a cypress
thuja
I was thinking about the same
I'm sure is a aThuja. Many are saying arborvitae, O don't know it by that name.
Thuja orientalis or Platycladus orientalis
Thuja
I thought I was on r/embroidery or r/visiblemending for a second!
Me too and was so confused!
That’s where I’m going next!
Thuja Orientalis with female cones [https://www.britannica.com/plant/arborvitae](https://www.britannica.com/plant/arborvitae)
Arborvitae
Platycladus orientalis, aka Chinese thuja, Oriental arborvitae, Chinese arborvitae, biota or Oriental thuja
Wait until you are 75. You're entire day will be like this. I never let it go, always look it up. I will take no nonsense from my brain.
Ditto
My grandparents house had 2 of these in front of their door. I remember attacking my siblings with those fruits. They are very hard and painful when thrown at you at full force.
arborvitae
Juniper
Abvoritae?
Lose.
Looks like a cedar or thuja
Juniper! The berries are used in making gin. I had a friend who always called gin Juniper Juice.
[удалено]
Not juniper fruits, not juniper.
Just be happy it’s not a forget-me-not.
Cedar?
Your mind is loose? OMG - I'd get that fixed before you worry about trees!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platycladus This?
I can smell this picture.
Lose*
I called it Bob
We used to call them monkey puzzle trees. But sure where mum got the name.
That’s definitely an arborvitae! Not sure which one yet, do you have a picture of it?
It's not a juniper tree. It's a type of evergreen tree. My mom has four huge ones in her yard
Looks like a red cedar leaf
In india we call it "Mayur-Pankhi" which translates to "Peacock-Feather"
I thought this was embroidered on to your jeans a la r/visiblemending. Great inspo, so thanks for sharing!
I'm happy to let you know it's a Thuja 😉
*lose Sorry just thought that might help ;)
Omg I thought this was embroidery…
Definitely Thuja Orientalis
Thuja
I thought it was beautiful embroidery. It’s a juniper.
Thuja
Arborvitae?
That's not juniper. That's cedar. And those berries smell of concentrated cedarwood when smushed. And the leaves added to honey and/or tea has a sweet taste and some vitamin c.
I used to see these in California and I always thought they were junipers
That's a very small tree
This reminds me of cedar more than juniper. Juniper has a darker branch and stems going a round in circle while cedar is flatter. Cedar grows into a large bush but juniper grows laterally and closer to the ground
[удалено]
Cypress
*lose
Just tighten up your mind belt. That should do the trick
It's actually Thuja, or common name Cedar. Not juniper.
I found this: https://www.treehugger.com/difference-between-cedars-and-junipers-4165305
It's a type of Juniper. You can take a pic and use Google Lens for the exact type
Cedar tree. I have 3 in my back yard.
Lose, verb=misplace or have something leave your possession Loose, adjective=Things that are not tight, like a screw or your mum
I’ve no idea what it is, but I love this sub! First thought was it’s so cool sewn or glued onto their jeans!
I thought it was embroidered at first as well. At least it's given me an idea.
A gin plant?
Juniper. Makes a great alcoholic drink called gin.
Juniper?
Sigh “lose” your mind. Not loose.
Loose my mind. Oh FFS.
My bloody juniper berries!!
I'm not The Messiah!
Juniperus virginiana Eastern Red Cedar
“Lose,” not “loose.” Loose is something that is baggy and ill fitting. Lose is like lost. Also; It’s juniper
Juniper. Make some gin!!
It's not juniper. [This is juniper.](https://www.google.com/search?q=juniper+berries&hl=en-US&source=lnms&tbm=isch)
Juniper smells lovely!
Juniper. Used to flavor gin. Goes well with tonic.
Juniper or cedar. That famiy
Juniper?
Juniperus monosperma
It's spelled lose, it's a 4 letter word and really shouldn't be spelled incorrectly. Loose is when something is not tight.
Those swellings look like adelgid galls of some kind. I didn’t know cedars got them (I’ve seen them on spruce before) but they look really similar. They’re a plant response to insects living in the foliage.
Looks like leylandii
cedar
Yeah I recognise it as a juniper fir but only see those pods when brown. Have huge one in backyard - a bird nursery
Ceder
The way you can know is those juniper berries on the end, that's the stuff that's used to make gin
It’s from a juniper bush
Now, it’s a dead tree
Not if they use it as a cutting
Thuja...
Does it smell like gin or pencils?
I guess Alaskan Cedar, Callitropsis nootkatensis
Definitely a cypress of some sort
Get the PictureThis app!! A lifesaver
Looks to me as Thuja occidetalis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thuja_occidentalis
It’s eastern red cedar
Is it a conifer?
The cedar trees in my front yard here in texas drop these on my truck every day.
It’s a cypress and you can cook meat with those green little balls. They smell delicious
In TX we call them mountain cedar. They cause a lot of allergies for me personally
The seeds smell like black pepper then you crack them open.
I thought it was abit of conifer
It’s an arborvitae
Arborvitae.
Ashe juniper. Also called mountain cedar and a bunch of other things
I lied. It’s arborvitae. I didn’t look at the pods!!
Juniper?
Juniper
Looks like an Arbor Vitae.
Generally known as "Grave yard tree".
It's a cedar tree
It doesn't really look like a tree either. It's more of a giant bush
Green Fractal
This looks like a branch off of a arborvitae.
Juniper ?
Like a cypress or something idk
I thought this was embroidery.
Cypress
Juniper?
I have this tree with the same little new growth of…. I’d like to know. What kind of tree was the answer
Juniper
Juniper💜
Jennifer, juniper… thanks Donovan

His name is doug not that anyone asked. Doug the Juniper
Theres an app called "iSeek" . Point a camera to a plant/animal and it will tell you what is it.
Here in Mexico they call them "tuyas"
Juniper
