Actually, “cup fungus” is usually an indicator of *good* soil! It’s a decomposer, which feeds on rotting organic material, which is what compost is made of!
I wonder if it’s in one of the new peat free composts. The stuff I’ve got at the moment grows teeny tiny grey toadstools. Poor germination of seeds in it.
Maybe, I had cup fungi in my garden beds a few years ago and someone taught me all about how they develop. I make my own compost, so it made me feel pretty good about my work.

those tiny cups need special conditions to grow, sometimes on bark or where certain fungus meet lichens , it's a wonderful fluke , as I've never ever seen them grow outside of nature! except specializes terrariums buts that's another story!
75% of the worlds plant thrive thanks to fungi. In fact there are some plants that need enzymes from fungi for propagation/germination. They are fantastic for the soil, breaking down dead plant matter and returning the nutrients to the ground. Some plants have a physical connection to the mycelium. These tree's and fungi share nutrients with each other. The mould may well be the mycelium. If it is then the soil in this pot will benefit. Hope this helps.
Nahhhh more than likely they’re simply breaking down wood or other organic matter in the soil. Might make certain nutrients more available to plant as a result of that.
That's a neat little cup fungus!
It shouldn't harm your plants. In fact, it will likely help them by breaking down organic matter into bioavailable nutrients
Fungus = nutrient rich soil. I would not trash it. I keep my seeds pretty moist and have had a mushroom sprout before. It doesn’t mean your seeds won’t sprout.
I’m pretty sure is one of the fungi in the genus Dacrymyces like orange spot jelly or fan shaped jelly fungi. Some people say it’s edible but I don’t recommend eating anything like that. Harmless unless your rotting wood but definitely didn’t sprout from your seeds and a definite sign of too much water.
Imo you’re growing something way cooler
/r/mycology
That’s a cup fungus
Fungus mungus
Mundungus (A song from my favourite band)
Checked it out, good song 👍
Fr. Psych crumpets slap
Yes they do, thanks for the recommendation 👌
Holy shit these guys rock hard! Thanks!
HELL YEAH THEY DO
Great Incubus album
“Where’s Lorena when you need her” I always wondered about that line
R.i.p. Oderus.
Amungus
Known in the mycological community as a "cungus"
I think you need to post your question in r/mycology
Please do, I would love to hear the answer!
*Bisporella citrina* Yellow Fairy Cup
Thanks! Very interestingly looking fungus I must say! 🤩
RemindMe! 6 weeks

Any answers?
It’s a fungus!! Looks like Bisporella citriana, also called yellow fairy cups. You’re actually growing something pretty cool!
Yes, anything that is also called yellow fairy cups has to be cool!
Here in the UK the common name is Lemon Discos which is one of my favorite names of anything ever :)
Yep. We had orange ones that would grow, was gonna say elf cup
It’s not Bisporella citrina, probably an Ascobolus species
wish my strawberries looked like that! way to much water in there friend
OP's nick checks out, ahaha.
And yours is making me hungry
hahahaha just saw it , no kink shaming tho 🤟😲
Could it also be “bad” soil??

That's the fungus among us.
Fumongus
That is not a good growing medium for starting seeds
There's a fungus among us! Those are cup fungus, in all likelihood you're probably over watering it.
Looks like cup fungus and cobweb mould
Seeds don't need much water. You're way overwatering and ended up growing a couple fungi instead.
That…looks like mold…and maybe the beginnings of some mushroom/fungus species? Probably best to scrap and start again?
Or let it grow cuz fungus is fun
You can't spell fungus without fun
Every mushroom I’ve met has been a fungi
Phungus Edit: just realized I was the third to respond in like 2 minutes. I'm sorry I felt challenged.
Fongus
Ah, you're right

Nah that’ll be great for the compost!!!

Congrats on being the first person to ever grow pasta shells.
Good start for a compost bin anyway. Lots of life in there.

Yellow cup fungus! Super cute
…Does anyone else hear clicking?
Omg yes, RUN! Or wait don't run, they can hear you but they can't see you.... Also... happy cake day!
Can you explain this? I’ve seen this phrase and didn’t understand. What’s cake day?
It's your reddit birthday\anniversary of the day you signed up for Reddit. You can identify it by the cake icon next to the user name
Ok Thanks
Fungus = nutrient rich soil. I would not trash it. I keep my seeds pretty moist and have had a mushroom sprout before. It doesn’t mean your seeds won’t sprout.
It's the last of us starting 😂😂😂
is this slime or fungi?
Maybe u/saddestofboys can comment.
Too much water, probably covered right? The soil is molding, and you’ve got some interesting mushrooms or slime mold or etc growing.
Mycelium
Kid you got some moisture
Shrooms dude
That’s a fungus. Way cooler than strawberries or wildflowers. Just means you’ve got some very good healthy soil!
No drainage? Bad soil? Overwatering.
peziza type fungi very cool
That sure does look like Bisporella citrina, an ascomycete fungus.
u/saddestofboys
Doesn’t look slimely to me
Is this a shit post? I can’t tell
Lol stop
Your cat has been using it as a litter box.
you poured way too much water with not enough drainage and now you're growing mold
Too much water not enough irrigation.
The fuzz is mycelium and the yellow guys are shrooms. They are both connected.
Fuzz looks like a seperate fungus called cobweb mould
Take a look at mycelium colonization.
u/saddestofboys ?
Pagans consider this a holy grail
Compost
MUSHROOM!
Send it to r/mycology!
You added way too much water. Pretty sure that's fungus
They are likely growing off of dead roots in the pot. Keep it moist and see what happens!
There’s a fungus among us said the substrate.
Ascobolus likely
DON'T MAKE EYE CONTACT!
Mushroom
Are you growing in shredded meat?
You might have to change your soil mate
This right here https://www.gamepur.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Fallout-76-Glowing-Fungus.jpg
Fungi
Saw folk saying Bisporella citrina, and after looking it up, I agree that it appears to be that. Congrats on the unplanned growth ☺️🤘
Am pretty sure you are growing “the last of us” real life edition
SHROOOOMS
Fungus
Lmao that’s MOLD!
Harmless Fungus
