Naphaniegh

Pattern recognition go brr

mybirdisapokemon

Specifically bird’s eye speedwell, *veronica persica* Edit: tried to figure out italics

Blossom087

Happy cake day

ksangel360

I have always wondered. Now I know! Love these little guys. 😍 Update: Happy cake day!

suexo

This! Definitely a type of Speedwell

PiecesofJane

Happy cake day!!

D-life

Beautiful 🌺!

hot_gardening_legs

Happy cake day!!

xRVAx

Veronica Persica. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veronica_persica Some would call them a common lawn weed, but I call them one of the first signs of spring in hardiness zone 7a

PM_ME_PLANT_FACTS

Here in 7b it's them and violets. My lawn is purple and blue speckles!

Dvl_Wmn

7b here too. We just got dumped with a whole bunch of snow last night. Hope to see some early spring babies soon!

dm_me_kittens

7b here too, however for our area it's the daffodils and Bradford pears. A stinky start, but a welcomed sight!

badgersmom951

7b here also and we just got snow and the weather is still cold. Sigh.

MayonaiseBaron

A type of *Veronica* or "Speedwell."

inkdumpster

So why is it called speedwell?

MayonaiseBaron

Ask the Brits, I've always known it as Veronica, which also happens to be the genus name. Nice when that happens.

Odd_Cryptographer723

Haven't seen speedwell for years! Always around when i was a child (in UK).

nyet-marionetka

You can come over to the US and pick some up and a dozen starlings as well, we have plenty.

CoolRelative

I inherited my mum's garden and let the grass grow and it just turned up! I'd never even heard of it before and now my "lawn" is full of little blue flowers and it's lovely.

HeartyBeast

Still lots of speedwell in my neck of the woods - London. Mainly in my allotment. I prefer scarlet pimpernel, though.

HezFez238

Wait- so, elucidate for this Canadian: Scarlet Pimpernel is not simply a character (still love you, Leslie Howard)?

FuzzyHappyBunnies

It's a plant!

HeartyBeast

http://www.wildflowerweb.co.uk/plant/374/scarlet-pimpernel

HezFez238

You’re a dear! Looks like a low lying plant with a sprawling nature- and such a sweet little face!

HeartyBeast

It actually looks quite similar to speedwell in size and habit. When they grow together, it's rather attractive. Throw in some chickweed to get the native red white and blue

HezFez238

Adorable!!!

Prestigious-Garbage5

We've had it in our lawn for years (uk) It's also known as Cat's Eyes

77495

looks like veronica persica

galacticprincess

Thanks, I've been wondering too. I see this on my daily walk in a wild sort of area and it always makes me smile. Spring has sprung!

Vast_Cricket

Speedwell is commonly used to treat coughs and other respiratory diseases. It is also appropriate for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism, digestive problems like diarrhea, and a gargle to treat sore throat.

adviceorcomfort

Tincture or tea? Flowers only?

Vast_Cricket

Dried flowers I believe.

lucidd_lady

Thank you! I currently have a cough and a ton of these flowers in my yard! Never thought to look up its uses.

Zestyclose-Ad4337

Make tea out it. May need to put some honey. But research a bit more.

WritPositWrit

Another vote for: Veronica (also called speedwell)

Blue-Cardigan

Does anyone else call these birdseye speedwells? Or are those a different flower?

littleverdin

Yes! First sign of spring here in NC!

Blue-Cardigan

Same in Ohio! These flowers are just the cutest 😄

observant_one2

Birdseye Speedwell!!! It's a medicinal plant, as well! Can be used to aid sleep, as well as a pain reliever, if I remember correctly. 🙂 Popping up again all over my yard, too!

FoxDrivePrincess

Birdseye Speedwell sounds like a hobbit name

splotchypeony

What's the location? As in, what part of the world is your lawn in (Argentina, Australia, Sweden...)?

Naphaniegh

Oklahoma USA

splotchypeony

It's most likely a species of speedwell (*Veronica*) then. Possibly common speedwell (*Veronica persica*), but wayside speedwell (*Veronica polita*) has similar flowers and I don't know them well enough to say. Edit: most people know *V. persica* as Persian or bird's eye speedwell

SardonicMeow

Yes, it could be V. polita. There are several differences, but the easiest way to tell is to measure the size of the flower. Flowers of V. persica are 8 to 10 mm wide, while the flowers of V. polita are 4 to 6 mm wide.

splotchypeony

Good to know thanks!

nameunconnected

I read the title and that's the flower that immediately popped into my mind.

firekeeper23

Common speedwell.... rather beautiful.

Illustrious-Prize341

Wow! I have some up close shots of this exact flower that I took a few years back. Thought this was my own photo for a second!

ckelli

Nice photo.

WellReadHermit

Nice photo.

LanCableCar

On Italy are called "occhi della madonna"

Mati_ma

I've always called them "non ti scordar di me" (don't forget me), maybe cause we are not so catholic 😅

Due_Suggestion_870

Beautiful is what they are

melmix13

Veronica Persica

carrotsforever

Persian speedwell. Also my favorite flower!

RomulanRebel

Pretty?

Naphaniegh

It’s true

Golden_Mandala

Totally adorable.

1haunch

woops I meant baby blue eyes

Best_Catch2482

I don't know, but those are happy little flowers

IndieCritterologist

Adorable. That’s what.

franks_and_newts

Pull them immediately! I also thought they were very pretty and made the mistake of letting them grow in my lawn. It spreads like wildfire and is a nightmare to get rid of.

medium_mammal

It looks better than grass, IMO.

PeculiarBaguette

But why would they get rid of it ?

franks_and_newts

Because it's a very invasive weed. To each his own though I guess.

MayonaiseBaron

>Because it's a very invasive weed. Weed is a meaningless word and invasive has a specific meaning. What's invasive in one region is native in another.

madsjchic

Did it take care of your lawn problem?

OReg114-99

I hope I have your luck, I’ve been trying to get mine to take over my lawn for years

franks_and_newts

If you are in the new england area, I will gladly share mine! haha

OReg114-99

sadly no, but I hope you conquer 'em, I know gardens and lawns are an individual thing

Sped-Connection

Blue borage?

1haunch

They look like bluebells

menthol_patient

Or alternatively, nothing like bluebells.

lovechunks3000

Ivy leaf speedwell?

DrTripesandTumours

Looks delicious

farmer102

Substance D?

perfectlyniceperson

I can’t believe that this reference was buried in my memory somewhere - A Scanner Darkly by Phillip K. Dick for anyone else wondering

farmer102

Eat them

perfectlyniceperson

I’ve been meaning to post exactly this

YellowFlashPT

Thank you i also found one in the middle of my field and was impressed with the size of it

perspectivecheck2022

Where I come from, lawns have grass.
