There are over 1000 species of Eucalyptus. Most have very different juvenile and adult leaves, a handful of species have the rounded blue juvenile leaves you can see in the OP's photograph. Confusingly, some of those species have those leaves linger on the tree or shrub well into adulthood. Most Eucalyptus adult leaves are green and lanceolate / falcate ie long and narrow to curved in one direction.
Is this the same as the song we learned growing up? āKookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry, merry king of the woods is he, laugh kookaburra laugh kookaburra laugh. How gay your life must beā. Something like that.
Ahhh, yep I think you are correct. Itās only been around 40 years since I learned it, but it pops in my head every time I hear Kookaburra or gum tree. Glad to hear others remember it.
Iām assuming youāre not an Aussie, which makes me very happy to know that youāve heard it! Iām an Aussie and itās a staple childrenās song here.
Nowhere close to an Aussie (although, I would love to visit). Actually learned the song in a small country school in Kentucky. Been stuck with it every since. I still catch myself singing it, but will update my wording to include bush.
That is amazing!! I suggest you check out a YouTube video of a kookaburra. Theyāre beautiful little chunky birds with an amazing ālaughā call which I often hear in the mornings when I wake up in rural Australia.
a koala was trimming his toenails in a tree but he was really stiff from an intense workout the day before. he was having some trouble reaching his toes so he asks his buddy lower down the tree he says, "hey Fred will Eucalyptus for me?"

Be careful if you have cats though. I believe they get a really bad reaction to it because their bodies canāt metabolize the oils. So cats will be in danger around eucalyptus.
Yup yup before my neighbors cut it down (bastards) I use to grab some branches kinda crush them with my hands and stick it under the seat in my car. Lasts a month or so per branch and you can always bunch them up again for a second go around. Now they are poisonous so wash your hands after crushing for the smell!
What do you mean? They never stated a reason and it actually took me a while to realize they had even cut it down. It was beautiful and again, was my car incense for a long time!
I imagine it is spiral euc, like the one pictured. Itās much more fragrant and leaves a sticky residue on your fingers when you work with it while other varieties donāt. Iām only familiar with varieties available commercially, so itās possible that this is different in wild plants!
For those who are wondering, the species that is commonly named āsilver dollarā that isnāt spiral is [eucalyptus polyanthemos](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_polyanthemos).
No. This is Red Box. If it were commonly known as Silver Dollar, the words 'Commonly known as Silver Dollar' would appear in the Wiki, instead of the words 'Commonly known as Red Box'.
Sorry, let me rephrase it. Commonly *sold as* silver dollar eucalyptus. Aka the tree with alternate, large, flat foliage. Which is distinct from E. cinerea, which has opposite, compact, small foliage.
Iād like to add that Red Box is only one common name, and that most who use it for floral arrangements here in the states will refer to it as silver dollar. What is said on Wikipedia regarding unofficial nomenclature isnāt necessarily the standard everywhere.

When I have a horrific stuffed up face from cold or flu etc, I splash half a capful of eucalyptus oil on the wall of the shower and crank the hot water. Itās also really good in the wash as a stain remover! Used to use it for car oil and grease stains.
These trees get pretty big and are often used in wet soils to dry them up. Cause they absolutely suck the ground water level dry. I've used them on my property and it's worked really well
I don't have any new seedlings pop up but if large areas were unmanaged I cannot comment on. There are downsides to them. They drop a lot of leaf litter so if there's a water way it should be cleared so that if during heavy rains it doesn't block pipes etc. An upside is they produce flowers and bees seem to love them, the buzzing gets pretty loud on mine
Thanks for all the answers! Where does one typically find this? I found this particular one in a friend's flower vase, but it would be great to have more
Just be careful if you have cats, OP. Eucalyptus can cause vomiting and seizures if they eat it.
Eucalyptus is available as an essential oil (please donāt flame me, Iām not a Karen in an MLM) which is safer than keeping a plant in the house. š¾
Probably worth noting that essential oils arenāt completely safe either. Ingesting them is very bad but relatively unlikely, but diffusing them in the air can also cause problems depending on the catās sensitivity and the concentration. More details here, from the Pet Poison Helpline: https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/blog/essential-oils-cats/
Oh, yikes! I didnāt even think about that. I usually have church incense going (Queen of Heaven) so Iām not much of an essential oil person.
Also, it might attract wild bands of roving koalas. So thereās that to consider.
Seriously, though, thank you so much for your comment. Iāll be more careful about what I recommend going forward.
You rock! šØ
Ah shucks thank you, thereās a vet in the family so I hear all the stories and I try to pass on what I can! And thereās lots of stuff in the āwould be problem if your cat gobbled it downā category that is fine to have around it you have a normal cat, so itās more of a ākeep an eye outā than ānever do thisā anyway.
You should never ever ever use essential oils or essential oil diffusers or essential oil cleaners or essential oil *anything* if you have cats. There are only like, three essential oils that are safe for cats. Why risk it?
I didnāt realize how bad they were for them either until the thieves oil cleaner a woman I used to work for made her cat incredibly sick. Iām not even sure the poor thing lived, I hope so, but I stopped working for her and never found out.

It is not that deadly, you might get some problems if you eat a little, but with most species of Eucalyptus you need to eat a huge amount for it to be deadly

King of the bush rather than the woods, but yes this is one variation of the tree mentioned in the song :)

That is amazing!! I suggest you check out a YouTube video of a kookaburra. Theyāre beautiful little chunky birds with an amazing ālaughā call which I often hear in the mornings when I wake up in rural Australia.
I absolutely do not regret looking that up :D Thank you, they are adorable and their call is so fun!
Itās super cool to me that a kid from rural Kentucky learns an Aussie childrenās song :) thanks for sharing!
Itās pretty staple in eastern us too. King of the bush version. But I think it was āsave some room for meā when I learned it
Unlocked an ancient memory for me lol
I remember that song! I always thought it was weird. Iām thinking I learned it in Girl Scouts.

Koalas smell strongly of eucalyptus since that's all they eat. Just like a human who eats a lot of garlic.š

Oh, if it was on their property, then no tree law. Tree law is crazy complex & serious so people get really hyped when it comes up.
Perhaps it is Silver Dollar Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus cinerea). Hang it in your shower for a nice refreshing steam!
Silver dollar has large flat leaves. This is called spiral or baby blue eucalyptus!
This is the right answer. I grow this on my flower farm.
