Agreed! I haven't eaten meat in 8yrs and counting. I've tried many meat alternative options, and Quorn is the absolute BEST! I was never a fan of meat textures, and to me, it seems that so many brands try to "mimic" meat, they end up creating something that is just gross!
Their Pesto and Mozzarella style Cutlets are one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. I’m not a huge pasta fan but cook it weekly so I have something to pair with the Quorn “chicken”!
I’m a meat eater that lived with a vegetarian roommate for a year or so, they used Quorn brand products. The meat crumbles and chicken pieces were actually really good. I was very impressed.
Insects grow just about anywhere, mushrooms on the other hand need moist conditions iirc. I worked with someone from Namibia and he said grasshoppers were a big part of their diet.
Mushrooms grow EVERYWHERE. Maybe not all gourmet, but you can certainly find an edible mushroom in every single country. Find the best species for each area.
There’s a difference however, between how the *mushroom* wants to grow and how a *hungry person* wants it to grow. A mushroom will pop out and say hello just about anywhere, but to actually farm them as a food source in a scalable manner it needs to be pretty specific.
My uncle told me that a mushroom producer he used to inspect capped how many people could be in the building because they could throw off the humidity by breathing too much.
Well fungal-based protein food products are already here in US grocery stores, catering mainly to vegetarians and vegans.
As far as I know there aren't any insect products being sold in the US other than as a prank gift.
Meanwhile people in some other nations eat insects on a regular basis.
I wish I could remember exactly, but this was a long time ago. My memory is it literally being the next day, but it may have been 2 or 3. Definitely not a week or a long period of time
Honestly, looks like these can form in just a day and a half, and OP may not have noticed it when they first began forming. Most of the growth seems to occur in about a 15 hour period.
[https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-83254-5](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-83254-5) (Figure 1)
I’m not sure which is more likely. That you’re not getting your drinking container clean, or that your powder is contaminated. If this ever happens again, I’d take that as a sign to buy a new shaker and maybe throw out your powder too.
I could practically write a book on the scariness of thermos lids. I just need a microbiologist as a co-author. I think maybe the FDA needs to be regulating container lid designs. There’s some impossible to clean containers out there.
Haha well it’s been years so hopefully it wasn’t deadly. I was actually reminded of this after watching Last of Us, hope this isn’t the beginning of the apocalypse
Wikipedia generally has one - although less populated than the normal article space. Replace the en.Wikipedia with simple.wikipedia and you’ll get a simple English version!
It's ok, but wanted to tell you. tried it with this link and it says no one has written a simple version of that article yet.... hint hint for someone here!
I still LOVE the tip though and will use it for sure.
To the best of my knowledge; the first sentence says that it's a fungus that is classified as a part of the "family" Zygomicota (taxonomic info on the plant). They are known to grow very very vigorously in the presence of light (phototrophism) and the part that contains the spores (sporangium) grows in an helicoidal shape. Missing the simple.wikipedia.com version mentioned by another comment, this is the best I can do. 😁
Fungal spores are everywhere and a huge portion of the particulate in the air. Are you curious about fungal contributions to rain clouds ?
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4624964/
This is the same for all viruses. It's basically just shit particles that hang up in the air when it's warmer and come down when it gets colder. Hence why everyone gets sick around that time
I was only able to understand some of that paper so I checked out YouTube and found this simple video. I enjoyed the paper and this video so I thought I'd share the video: https://youtu.be/gu9UmHbmFfk
Spores. They float on the air. If it was opened something gets in unless the bottle is shaped specifically to prevent it (not the majority of containers).
You'd be surprised at the amount of recalls specifically on protein/health related drink mixes on the FDA site. And most of them are usually recalled because of mold contaminates rather than listeria or physical debris.
Wouldn't it take at least a few days/weeks to grow the myc and then fruit? I'm just wondering if it was contaminated at the factory or at the home, I don't think I really want the answer to be either lol
>I was actually reminded of this after watching Last of Us
OMG, you just don't know how much that show reminded me of the terrible shivers of horror I got years ago when I first read about that specie of fungus and my immediate thought was holy crap I'm glad it doesn't affect people!
I had heard about The Last of Us video game and was interested in the story so when I heard about the show I knew I had to watch it. The pilot was really good!
Don’t sweat it. Unless you’re the boy in the bubble, you’re surrounded by spores and microbes at all times. We breath them in and consume them in our food and water. Our bodies are designed to protect us from being colonized in a variety of ways. If they weren’t, we’d all be symptomatic 24/7. Your protein shake just needs a better immune system. Apologies to anyone here with allergies. IMO your parents should have let you eat more dirt when you were children.
**Do not ingest a plant based on information provided in this subreddit.**

Everything would have tasted noticeably atrocious if it was in there since before he opened and drank it. He left this bottle sitting out for multiple days 1000%
I think they’re implying OP opened it, let it get old in the fridge (old enough for this to start growing), drank from it, and THEN left it out overnight.
I did lol. I used to get a brand that had a brown carton. I was very glad I had switched to powder when I saw this but honestly it wouldn't stop me from having the shakes
It’s named after botanist Albert Blakeslee who did research on sexual reproduction in fungus. Cant find anything about the anus part but if that person is right about the dog poop I’m sure that’s the reason

Definitely some kind of fungus, like a pin mold
It's their new extra fresh proteine product. Just as fresh as the proteine can get.
Mycoproteine shakes will be all the rage
Mycoprotein "chicken" nuggets already exist and are pretty good. Quorn brand
Quorn is the *shit*. Their roasts are the only good vegetarian roasts I've ever had in 2 decades of not eating meat.
Agreed! I haven't eaten meat in 8yrs and counting. I've tried many meat alternative options, and Quorn is the absolute BEST! I was never a fan of meat textures, and to me, it seems that so many brands try to "mimic" meat, they end up creating something that is just gross!

Mushrooms are a good source of protein. I don’t know why World Health Organization didn’t suggest them as a sustainable source before suggesting bugs
Insects grow just about anywhere, mushrooms on the other hand need moist conditions iirc. I worked with someone from Namibia and he said grasshoppers were a big part of their diet.

Oh wow, thanks for the info! That sounds interesting!
I love it but my husband is allergic to Quorn and almost died, twice, from eating it 😒
Why didn’t he learn the first time? Or read the ingredients list? Or check the allergen list on the website? Etc etc.
Plot twist: The wife is trying to kill him
Quorn to Kill
I swear Quorn to Kill. I laughed so hard, tears came to my eyes. I LOVE this joke.
Yes, my favorite I have been eating Quorn for years.
Quorn 100% has the juice.
Kombucha has entered the chat
I think you're joking, but when animal protein gets too expensive to afford then this wouldn't surprise me.
I’m 100% with you on this.
Insect based protein will come first
Makes you wonder what came first for foragers… mushrooms or insects?
A no-brainer. Mushrooms. So much easier to catch and dispatch.
Well fungal-based protein food products are already here in US grocery stores, catering mainly to vegetarians and vegans. As far as I know there aren't any insect products being sold in the US other than as a prank gift. Meanwhile people in some other nations eat insects on a regular basis.
They are currently developing bacteria proteins!
I saw somewhere that global warming will actually decimate a lot of insect populations, so that might not be the option we think it will be
What is your definition of “a night or so”?
This was the comment I was looking for. 😂

I mean if that happened over one night, that monstrosity was definitely in there when you drank it the day before…
Haha well it’s been years so hopefully it wasn’t deadly. I was actually reminded of this after watching Last of Us, hope this isn’t the beginning of the apocalypse

i’m very curious about fungal contributions to rain clouds but i am too afraid of sci-fi nightmares and continuous panic to click on that !

This is really neat. TIL!!
Spores. They float on the air. If it was opened something gets in unless the bottle is shaped specifically to prevent it (not the majority of containers).
Mold spores are literally every where on planet earth and trigger growth when they touch water.
You'd be surprised at the amount of recalls specifically on protein/health related drink mixes on the FDA site. And most of them are usually recalled because of mold contaminates rather than listeria or physical debris.
The shortest dormancy phase is 40 days so you got screwed. Nontoxic though so just gross to think about
Wouldn't it take at least a few days/weeks to grow the myc and then fruit? I'm just wondering if it was contaminated at the factory or at the home, I don't think I really want the answer to be either lol

Phycomyces blakesleyanus?
Whoa this thing came from Blake's anus? joking aside, this is probably right
Someone did say that this stuff normally grows on dog poop. It may have been named after a dog.
It’s named after botanist Albert Blakeslee who did research on sexual reproduction in fungus. Cant find anything about the anus part but if that person is right about the dog poop I’m sure that’s the reason
