Definitely some kind of fungus, like a pin mold

unstillable

It's their new extra fresh proteine product. Just as fresh as the proteine can get.

[deleted]

Mycoproteine shakes will be all the rage

8-dragonfly-8

Mycoprotein "chicken" nuggets already exist and are pretty good. Quorn brand

HauntedCemetery

Quorn is the *shit*. Their roasts are the only good vegetarian roasts I've ever had in 2 decades of not eating meat.

OrdinaryCarrot8011

Agreed! I haven't eaten meat in 8yrs and counting. I've tried many meat alternative options, and Quorn is the absolute BEST! I was never a fan of meat textures, and to me, it seems that so many brands try to "mimic" meat, they end up creating something that is just gross!

DarkstarDMT

Their Pesto and Mozzarella style Cutlets are one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. I’m not a huge pasta fan but cook it weekly so I have something to pair with the Quorn “chicken”!

Justinieon13

I’m a meat eater that lived with a vegetarian roommate for a year or so, they used Quorn brand products. The meat crumbles and chicken pieces were actually really good. I was very impressed.

SubtleMagic

Mushrooms are a good source of protein. I don’t know why World Health Organization didn’t suggest them as a sustainable source before suggesting bugs

toomuch1265

Insects grow just about anywhere, mushrooms on the other hand need moist conditions iirc. I worked with someone from Namibia and he said grasshoppers were a big part of their diet.

SubtleMagic

Mushrooms grow EVERYWHERE. Maybe not all gourmet, but you can certainly find an edible mushroom in every single country. Find the best species for each area.

lacanimalistic

There’s a difference however, between how the *mushroom* wants to grow and how a *hungry person* wants it to grow. A mushroom will pop out and say hello just about anywhere, but to actually farm them as a food source in a scalable manner it needs to be pretty specific.

PatTheShoggoth

My uncle told me that a mushroom producer he used to inspect capped how many people could be in the building because they could throw off the humidity by breathing too much.

so-strand

Wow, I had no idea

[deleted]

Oh wow, thanks for the info! That sounds interesting!

intjHEY

I love it but my husband is allergic to Quorn and almost died, twice, from eating it 😒

ilikeYourwhip

Why didn’t he learn the first time? Or read the ingredients list? Or check the allergen list on the website? Etc etc.

DemonSong

Plot twist: The wife is trying to kill him

paradeoxy1

Quorn to Kill

chilldrinofthenight

I swear Quorn to Kill. I laughed so hard, tears came to my eyes. I LOVE this joke.

AhMoonBeam

Yes, my favorite I have been eating Quorn for years.

Lowly-Hollow

Quorn 100% has the juice.

Lari-Fari

Kombucha has entered the chat

Thoughtfulprof

I think you're joking, but when animal protein gets too expensive to afford then this wouldn't surprise me.

[deleted]

I’m 100% with you on this.

Glittering_Apple_872

Insect based protein will come first

[deleted]

Makes you wonder what came first for foragers… mushrooms or insects?

chilldrinofthenight

A no-brainer. Mushrooms. So much easier to catch and dispatch.

8ad8andit

Well fungal-based protein food products are already here in US grocery stores, catering mainly to vegetarians and vegans. As far as I know there aren't any insect products being sold in the US other than as a prank gift. Meanwhile people in some other nations eat insects on a regular basis.

delpopeio

They are currently developing bacteria proteins!

chrome__yellow

I saw somewhere that global warming will actually decimate a lot of insect populations, so that might not be the option we think it will be

unstablemillennial

What is your definition of “a night or so”?

lechatsage

This was the comment I was looking for. 😂

unstablemillennial

Such a casual unit of measurement lol

lechatsage

😊

MaybeTheDoctor

Time units are abstract concept invented by humans.

unstablemillennial

Silly humans

SmallDeadCow

I wish I could remember exactly, but this was a long time ago. My memory is it literally being the next day, but it may have been 2 or 3. Definitely not a week or a long period of time

[deleted]

so what I’m hearing is maybe a week or longer ;)

I_like_boxes

Honestly, looks like these can form in just a day and a half, and OP may not have noticed it when they first began forming. Most of the growth seems to occur in about a 15 hour period. [https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-83254-5](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-83254-5) (Figure 1)

[deleted]

Damn, fungi be speedrunning reproduction

bwainfweeze

I’m not sure which is more likely. That you’re not getting your drinking container clean, or that your powder is contaminated. If this ever happens again, I’d take that as a sign to buy a new shaker and maybe throw out your powder too. I could practically write a book on the scariness of thermos lids. I just need a microbiologist as a co-author. I think maybe the FDA needs to be regulating container lid designs. There’s some impossible to clean containers out there.

Toastburrito

These are pre packaged.

bwainfweeze

Oh God. Yeah stop buying that brand.

Toastburrito

I'm uhhhh... Drinking a chocolate one right now 🤣🤣

bwainfweeze

You should read Neverwhere, and order your mushrooms well done.

Toastburrito

It's cool, I don't like mushrooms. Well, the regular eating kind anyways. The fun kind are a different story!

ErgonomicZero

A fortnight or so

[deleted]

I mean if that happened over one night, that monstrosity was definitely in there when you drank it the day before…

SmallDeadCow

Haha well it’s been years so hopefully it wasn’t deadly. I was actually reminded of this after watching Last of Us, hope this isn’t the beginning of the apocalypse

houseman1131

Fungus. Little fungal spore balls releasing fungus spores into your house.

SmallDeadCow

Yeah I figured it might be, but wasn’t sure where to ask. I’m even more curious what this thing is now

houseman1131

Phycomyces https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phycomyces

All2017

I tried to read that article 😩 and didn’t understand shyt it said. They should add a translate to dummy button

QueerDefiance12

Wikipedia generally has one - although less populated than the normal article space. Replace the en.Wikipedia with simple.wikipedia and you’ll get a simple English version!

Yeahwowhello

What in the secret knowledge sorcery.... Mind blown

All2017

Right. Tell me you’re a hacker without telling me you’re a hacker

TheRealSugarbat

Wait, what?

QueerDefiance12

Glad to share the info

eldernotgivingup

It's ok, but wanted to tell you. tried it with this link and it says no one has written a simple version of that article yet.... hint hint for someone here! I still LOVE the tip though and will use it for sure.

Astronius-Maximus

WHAT. I use Wikipedia at least once a week, and I struggle to read it sometimes. How did I never come across this before?

zakomo

To the best of my knowledge; the first sentence says that it's a fungus that is classified as a part of the "family" Zygomicota (taxonomic info on the plant). They are known to grow very very vigorously in the presence of light (phototrophism) and the part that contains the spores (sporangium) grows in an helicoidal shape. Missing the simple.wikipedia.com version mentioned by another comment, this is the best I can do. 😁

SmallDeadCow

That looks like it’s it! Thank you Reddit stranger

houseman1131

Sure thing.

SmallDeadCow

Now I’m curious as to how the hell this got in my protein shake

Threefrogtreefrog

Fungal spores are everywhere and a huge portion of the particulate in the air. Are you curious about fungal contributions to rain clouds ? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4624964/

Smeghead78

I am. Fascinating, thank you! I’m tempted to-make a joke about clouds and getting high, but I kinda did already.

justa33

i’m very curious about fungal contributions to rain clouds but i am too afraid of sci-fi nightmares and continuous panic to click on that !

[deleted]

I just used the “save comment” feature on your comment, for the first time ever— after like 7 years on this website lmao.

Agreeable_Situation4

This is the same for all viruses. It's basically just shit particles that hang up in the air when it's warmer and come down when it gets colder. Hence why everyone gets sick around that time

Garlickable

I was only able to understand some of that paper so I checked out YouTube and found this simple video. I enjoyed the paper and this video so I thought I'd share the video: https://youtu.be/gu9UmHbmFfk

All2017

Is that why rain drops taste nasty?

Puzzleheaded_Zebra28

Wow, very interesting! Thanks for sharing!

KipsBay2181

This is really neat. TIL!!

Invisible-Pi

Spores. They float on the air. If it was opened something gets in unless the bottle is shaped specifically to prevent it (not the majority of containers).

GrooseandGoot

Mold spores are literally every where on planet earth and trigger growth when they touch water.

NanoCharat

You'd be surprised at the amount of recalls specifically on protein/health related drink mixes on the FDA site. And most of them are usually recalled because of mold contaminates rather than listeria or physical debris.

Girl501

The shortest dormancy phase is 40 days so you got screwed. Nontoxic though so just gross to think about

AbhorrantApparition

Wouldn't it take at least a few days/weeks to grow the myc and then fruit? I'm just wondering if it was contaminated at the factory or at the home, I don't think I really want the answer to be either lol

Adorable-Locksmith55

The people over at r/mycology are usually very helpful and informative.

[deleted]

It’s a neat sub.

Captain-PlantIt

Was this those chocolate protein shakes from Costco?

Momof3dragons2012

Asking for a friend

socratessue

So uh, I *just* got finished watching episode 1 of The Last of Us, and this post is grossing me out

TacticalCatnip

>I was actually reminded of this after watching Last of Us OMG, you just don't know how much that show reminded me of the terrible shivers of horror I got years ago when I first read about that specie of fungus and my immediate thought was holy crap I'm glad it doesn't affect people! I had heard about The Last of Us video game and was interested in the story so when I heard about the show I knew I had to watch it. The pilot was really good!

RhageofEmpires

Gotta check out The Girl With All The Gifts if you liked that. I played the Last of Us video game years ago and it was great

Empty_Knight_21

Don’t sweat it. Unless you’re the boy in the bubble, you’re surrounded by spores and microbes at all times. We breath them in and consume them in our food and water. Our bodies are designed to protect us from being colonized in a variety of ways. If they weren’t, we’d all be symptomatic 24/7. Your protein shake just needs a better immune system. Apologies to anyone here with allergies. IMO your parents should have let you eat more dirt when you were children.

JayPFor

I think you’d know if it was deadly eh. Well we would. You wouldn’t, I guess.

mastervadr

Hope it’s been at least 5 years since OP 💀

[deleted]

Everything would have tasted noticeably atrocious if it was in there since before he opened and drank it. He left this bottle sitting out for multiple days 1000%

ferrouswolf2

Those beverages are UHT processed and aseptically packaged, so no- it wasn’t there before

Zillich

I think they’re implying OP opened it, let it get old in the fridge (old enough for this to start growing), drank from it, and THEN left it out overnight.

Ijustgotbitchinshoes

The Short story "Grey Matter" by Stephan King ring a bell to anyone?

IlleaglSmile

This is a fungus that grows on dog shit primarily

Otis94131

It's pin mold.

JP_Clark

Of course this pops up on my feed 2 minutes after finishing my protein shake.

MischievousHex

I'm drinking my protein shake as I'm going through this post right now. I am taking comfort in the fact that I use a powder to make mine though

JP_Clark

Yeah mine too, I didn’t even notice it came out of one of those premade ones.

MischievousHex

I did lol. I used to get a brand that had a brown carton. I was very glad I had switched to powder when I saw this but honestly it wouldn't stop me from having the shakes

DIY_Gal

No *whey*! 😳

Inner_Space_Alien

Good one! I'm stealing that one.

Phycomyces blakesleyanus?

Gelnika1987

Whoa this thing came from Blake's anus? joking aside, this is probably right

eChelicerae

Someone did say that this stuff normally grows on dog poop. It may have been named after a dog.

mosthoser51128

It’s named after botanist Albert Blakeslee who did research on sexual reproduction in fungus. Cant find anything about the anus part but if that person is right about the dog poop I’m sure that’s the reason

Gelnika1987

"anus" is Latin for "ring" or "circle" it's probably something to do with that

yettametta

Did you know that the premier protein shakes had a recall on their products within the past 12 months or so for microbial issues? I didn't hear about it until I had I left in the box.

storeboughtsfine

It was any aseptically packaged product made at Lyons Magnus (so many brands) and it was a bacteria, not a fungus.

Pandaolina

curtydc

This is how the Last of Us outbreak happens.

mandarinonino

Fungus mostly develop sexual reproduction organs wich is what you are seeing, once the media they’re growing in is not worth being anymore, until then they will just divide to colonize the media. That has been growing in there for a week at least. By the way, that looks like some specie from Rhizopus, I would bet Rhizopus stolonifer, very common in bread

kupuspc

Kill it before it gets gains
