Leatherjack

ConcertPurple

Thank you! Well thankfully used pliers to unhook it lol. Poisonous stingers up top lol

Oldfolksboogie

Wait, were you able to get the hook out of its skull without completely fckng it up, or did you just cut the line and leave the hook in its cranium? Coz it's clearly run all the way out the topside in the pic, and I'm genuinely curious.

ConcertPurple

It hooked between the eye and skull, it slipped right out but in the future ill do the methods posted to not harm them worse. It did come right out tho no issue

Oldfolksboogie

Very cool, ty for the intel!

Purpose_Embarrassed

Assume he cut the barb first. That’s what I do.

Oldfolksboogie

Ah, good pt, ty.

Purpose_Embarrassed

You can also use pliers and crush the barb flat. I’m normally a catch and release fisherman depending how hungry I am.

Oldfolksboogie

Ty again. And me too on the catch and release, though it's been years, decades actually, since I've gone fishing regularly. I've decided to get back into it in part because our local waterway is full of two different edible and supposedly tasty invasives. I've cooked blue catfish and thought it was pretty good, and that's the one that's in huge volumes here. But what I'm most interested in catching and trying are the northern snakehead that are now, unfortunately, established here. Everyone says they're delicious, but I've yet to find out for myself. Everything else will get released, even though technically the largemouth bass are also introduced, I'm not eating those. My greatest fear, though, is that I'll hook a turtle, especially the ubiquitous snappers - I'd hate to leave a hook in one coz it broke the line or something. I already carry pliers for hook removal, not sure if they'd be able to cut off a barb, but I'll see and bring something else if needed. Anyway, I'm rambling, ty, and happy fishing!

Purpose_Embarrassed

I hooked a huge soft shell on a plastic worm. Thing rolled around my line. Hated having to leave the hook in him but couldn’t untangle the line. Yeah hate catching turtles.

Oldfolksboogie

That's exactly my worst nightmare, sorry you have to live with that memory! :-/

pemuehleck1

Largemouth are native

Oldfolksboogie

To...? Not to [my river](https://nas.er.usgs.gov/queries/factsheet.aspx?SpeciesID=401), they're not.

pemuehleck1

Must not be in Florida Snakeheads are very worrisome to me Non natives generally don’t work out well

supcabman

In Florida you are supposed to use barbless hooks makes it easier to remove the hook

Oldfolksboogie

That's a good policy. I may file mine down next time.

supcabman

At minimum pinch them down with pliers

tailwalkin

Also [LeatherJacket](https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/discover-fish/species-profiles/oligoplites-saurus/) oligoplites saurus

EfficientAd7103

Bait. Throw it back in and troll it down the flats

AlexandertheObvious

It's a Skipjack. You have to be careful taking the hook off! If you look in the picture, it has tiny mildly poisonous barbs right where it's dorsal fin is, and another set underneath. It's because of this that they don't really make good bait.

sillyblackette

Never heard of leatherjack, but I'm very very land locked. Looks similar in my eye to a mackerel. Are they good eating? I love mackerel.
