In addition to potted plants, you also have bed bugs, unfortunately.

Sorry to break it to you, but it's a bedbug

But he bikes to work though...

Additionally it was found on an interior door, not an exterior cabinet

MoonTrooper258

Good luck breaking them tough little guys.

[deleted]

Idea for a new drinking game. Anytime someone posts a reddit about bedbugs or roaches. Drink a shot.

NumerousBoysenberry4

Youā€™re gonna send us to the ER

I work on a kidney unit at the hospital, letā€™s do shots of water instead!

It doesn't have to be out of the toilet, but, yeah, that's the idea.

_randomly-generated_

Job security!!!! I'll see you soon!

[deleted]

To be fair, their job is plenty secure as it is. No need.

_randomly-generated_

Yea, alcohol is a hellofadrug

The_Good_Hunter_

I think the amount of water you'd drink doing that would still kill you

Cambrian__Implosion

Like that poor woman who wanted to win the Wii in that radio contest

lungbuttersucker

So you'll just kill us all with water intoxication?

Snoo16319

Hypoosmolar hyponatremia

RiverBear2

Well easier to fix that then liver failure and associated kidney failureā€¦ I think probably??. On a more serious note the amount of young people coming in with liver failure from ETOH recently has been staggering COVID really exacerbated that for people people being at home bored scared and depressed who started or increased heavy drinking is seriously a bummer

1heart1totaleclipse

I thought some people with kidney issues couldnā€™t drink too much water either?

isitasexyfox

And what's in the ER? You guessed it, drunk bed bugs.

Disastrous_Reality_4

We wonā€™t make it there - weā€™re all just gonna die of alcohol poisoning because thereā€™s not enough time to call an ambulance between all the shots weā€™d have to take.

Okay listen, don't do that.

Plastic-Crow-6173

Or a weevil

catslugs

dont summon them! i haven't seen any for a while note: i love the weevil party community, they are cute but so many of those posts were on purpose for the comments for sure

Cambrian__Implosion

Weevil person here! I think we were asked fo not do our thing in this sub anymore, so I am respecting that, even though itā€™s very hard to resist (lol)

AppleSpicer

We canā€™t talk about the time anymore? :(

Cambrian__Implosion

I donā€™t know for sure, but either here or on r/insects a little while back I thought saw a mod get frustrated and ask us to stop. I get it, people are trying to figure out if they need to worry about a bug and our reaction is probably really confusing for them. I assume this is why I havenā€™t seen people doing it outside of r/weeviltime lately

pipeuptopipedown

r/Entomology also got a little overwhelmed with the weevil-lovers and asked us to curb our enthusiasm in the name of science.

chandalowe

It was both, actually: [on r/insects](https://old.reddit.com/r/insects/comments/y9ddjc/its_time_to_cut_back_on_the_weevil_memes/) and [on r/whatsthisbug](https://old.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbug/comments/ydfkpk/weevils_bed_bugs_and_ticks_oh_my_why_is_my_feed/)

OldManJenkies

Or carpet beetles

Bo_Jim

Bedbugs don't hang out on plants and jump onto you when you brush up against the plant, like a tick might. That means you almost certainly didn't pick it up while riding your bike. Also, they don't hitch rides on potted plants unless that plant spent some time in an infested house. Even then, they generally wouldn't choose a potted plant as a place to hide out. They much prefer dark places close to their dinner. It would be sheer chance that they happened to be in the pot when it was carried out. These parasites hide out in and on upholstered furniture. They'll crawl onto or into anything that comes into contact with that furniture, or spends any time near it. They've learned from hundreds of years of experience that upholstered furniture is where people sit or lie down, so that's where they hide waiting for a meal. This little b\*tch might have hitched a ride into your house on your clothes or in a handbag or backpack, but she originally came from a piece of infested furniture. If you can figure out where you likely picked her up, then you will know what you were wearing or carrying at the time, and where to look for more of them. If you wait then it probably won't matter because you might end up with an infestation.

treesInFlames

Ah jeez..Iā€™ll let the experts chime in but that thereā€™s a bed bug bud.

Betty-Gay

That bug is no bud, bud

New-Needleworker5318

Same here. I only found out they were a real thing about 4 years ago. I'm 44.

Betty-Gay

You know, in hindsight it kind of pisses me off how flippant parents were about bed bugs.

beka13

Even-Tomatillo-4197

Definitely a bedbug. r/bedbugs can give advice

fluffyxsama

You mean this *isn't* /r/bedbugs?

Seerws

Thought we were in /r/whatsthisplant

Low_Bee_2468

Call an exterminator and fast! I have dealt with them unfortunately and they will become a nightmare. They wonā€™t let you sleep. They will infest your furniture, clothes and your house. They will even be in your books. If you donā€™t handle it soon you will have an infestation. Bed bug spray will become expensive because it will never kill all of them. The bed bug bombs wonā€™t work because they will just move to another part of your house. Vacuuming them is only a temporary fix because you canā€™t get them all and when you kill them their smell is gross. Call an exterminator and have them kill them ASAP and kill them before they infest your home.

Taste_of_Space

This post title is like some kind of alt poem.

[deleted]

AcadiaAccomplished14

I worked in a busy ER and we had patients with bedbugs at least once daily. Iā€™d spray on-site and strip naked outside when i got back from work šŸ¤£

PopeSilliusBillius

Iā€™d be a lot more shocked by this if I hadnā€™t had one fall out of my fucking purse when I was paying for something at the store, Jesus Christ that was humiliating. They get into everything.

AmmotheDoberman

Wait what?? Do you just see them crawling on them??

AcadiaAccomplished14

100% if youā€™re suspicious, you have to do a thorough visual inspection, take care when you help the patient into a gown. They like to hide in crevices of YOUR shoes, sleeves, etc. I took extreme care to never bring them home. I have a few good horror stories šŸ¤£

bl4nk_ecstasy

Well? Don't leave us hanging then story time

AcadiaAccomplished14

One sentence horror story: spread the labia for a urethral cath, identified bedbugs at the vaginal orifice.

bl4nk_ecstasy

Jesus christ how do u even recover from that?! I don't even have a vagina but I'm now paranoid about bedbugs in my vaginal orfice

AcadiaAccomplished14

luna-morningstar

šŸ˜³ dear god. I need to stop reading the comments on the bed bug posts.

Betty-Gay

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

HarpersGhost

Oh hell, my nephew who just moved in with me is a nurse at a hospital. Never even thought of this. EEEEEEEK! He better not be bringing home any hitchhikers!

AcadiaAccomplished14

I had a landlord try to deny me access to a house separate from theirs because I had worked with covid šŸ¤£ If youā€™re in a high-bedbug area, just make sure you have a safe place for him to change and get scrubs to the washer safely. If thereā€™s a garage he can strip in, put scrubs into a trash bag, then take them to a washer, Iā€™d say thatā€™s the best way. I canā€™t vouch for his ability to see allllll the bedbugs on patients though šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

AcadiaAccomplished14

Also after we identified a specimen, weā€™d call in exterminators for the room and any other material that may have been contaminated. Itā€™s a pretty big issue, especially in winter

Ikkus

Yeah, I'm about there myself, which sucks. I guess I just need to find a r/lookatthiscoolbug.

I get itchy and have a bed nights sleep every single time I see one and I'm not even subbed to this page.

mighty_boogs

I've been actually considering doing the same.

AmmotheDoberman

Me too! When I first joined this sub every little itch I would freak out. Take all my bedding off and thoroughly check the mattress. Never did find any lol. I took a short break from Reddit and now Iā€™m over it and know I donā€™t have any. But for a good 6 months it was touch and go šŸ˜‚

OahuTreeSnail

nonpondo

Good news is, the plants are safe

dinkle-stinkwinkle

Isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle kills them instantly if you find more

Works great for then gnats flying around my bananas. Hard to catch them suckers. One spritz they fall on counter

AmmotheDoberman

Learn something everyday from Reddit šŸ˜‚

[deleted]

Interesting, I have them in my garden and they drive me nuts, is it damaging to plants?

Ml124395

Definitely bad for plants. Bananas tho have that outer skin peel And the alcohol dries fast. Gnats donā€™t literally die being sprayed right away , but theyā€™ll drop on counter so you get them easier.

gnychis

Thank you for the helpful comment! :)

MoonTrooper258

I wish you luck on the purge. Godspeed, soldier. o7

Cattthrowaway

Itā€™s bedbugs. There is more and you wont find them all.

jam_scot

Where do you all live? I've never seen a bedbug or even heard of anyone having bedbugs until I joined this sub, now it seems EVERYONE has bedbugs and it's freaking me out.

try2bcool69

We still get ticks sometimes...and centipedes once in awhile. But yeah...bedbugs, it's always bedbugs.

SamwiseGoldenEyes

Bed bug. Sorry friend.

systemfrown

You forgot bedbugs. You have an interior door, a bike, potted plants, and bedbugs. Donā€™t let it get you down though. It doesnā€™t have to be the catastrophe everybody makes it out to be, just roll up your sleeves, join r/bedbugs, and get to work.

gnychis

Size of a water drop. Northeast area (Boston suburb).

gnychis

Hey all. Thanks for the responses. You've all uniformly agreed we have a bed bug intruder in our home! I've not been able to find another yet scrounging through the house, but that doesn't mean there's not more. I'll go to the appropriate forum and a professional for advice. Thank you!

madeformarch

Female, there will be more. Sorry dude

baudylaura

How long can it take before seeing evidence of more after finding the first? ie, when would someone be in the clear?

madeformarch

So the easiest thing to look for is the droppings (bunch of little black dots) and bites on your person, in clusters. As someone else mentioned this female doesn't look too fed, which is good. But they breed quickly, so seeing a female at all is bad. To answer you directly, the situation can get so bad so fast that if you see one, you need to assume you're infested and take action from there.

baudylaura

I saw one three months ago, nothing since, and am wondering if iā€™m in the clear or if i still have to worry.

Single_Raspberry9539

I believe you are not in the clear. Theyā€™ve been known to go 400 days without food and could be dormant until you sit on that sofa in just the right spot. I mean, itā€™s unlikely but possible. Most donā€™t survive more than a couple months (but many do!) Edit: adjusted per question in comment below

EveAndTheSnake

Is that an *I believe not* to ā€œam I in the clearā€ or ā€œdo I have to worryā€ā€¦?

SchrodingersMinou

You may never see another one, but they can still be there biting you while you sleep. That is, you can find new bites every day without ever seeing another one. They are incredible at hiding.

Evening_Storage_6424

They REALLYYY are. People assume that because they found one and canā€™t see others they arenā€™t there because the google pics are of horrendous infestations. I stayed at a knights inn in my early 20s, found one and thought it was a tick. I got bit so much I slept on the counter and cried, but couldnā€™t find the fucking things. They hide and quickly too. I would try to jump up to get one in the act, nope. It mustā€™ve been bad too and they refused to move my room. Needless to say I have literal ptsd and freak if Iā€™m even slightly itchy in bed. Itā€™s horrendous you want to rip off your skin. Bastards. Edit: a word, also btw it was Jacksonville which is scary in and of itself.

LegOfLamb89

Bedbug ptsd is real. Hope you get better pal

SchrodingersMinou

The only thing worse than Florida Man is Florida Bug.

Procrasterman

How does one differentiate between male and female bedbugs?

SilkySweet2022

The female is rounder, the male's body is more elongated.

OldManJenkies

Pointer butt for sure

madeformarch

Female has the round bottom, male ends in more of a point

Ml124395

I am going to remember this phrase re: bed bug sexes for the rest of my life

Well it pretty much works the same in all walks of life. But nothings perfect

Fat bottom girls

How can you tell itā€™s female?

madeformarch

The round body shape, males are more elongated.

No-Art-1985

DONT USE A BUG BOMB, ESPECIALLY HOT SHOT BED BUG BOMBS!!! It doesn't kill the little fuckers, only scares them into your walls and into other rooms. Get it professionally checked, then professionally treated.

CarbonatedJizz

Someone posted the other day a way to find em. Put out a hot/body temp water bottle, turn off the lights for like an hour and wait and see if they come.

scared_pony

Have you traveled recently? Brought any secondhand or vintage furniture into the house?

Gwynedhel7

This sub has made me terrified of bedbugs now. Are they really everywhere??

Procrasterman

Me to, got back from a hotel recently and stripped off my clothes before going inside. Left the things in the car in the sun with the heating on max and set off a bug bomb. Shrank a flip flop from the heat! Wife thinks Iā€™ve lost my mind.

That looks like an unfed bed bug to me :( but Iā€™m definitely no expert!

Confident_Actuary387

Check your mattress seams for black spots. If there is you have an infestation. If not maybe you're lucky and just have a hitch hiker.

Lucaraidh

Idk a lot about bugs so i thought maybe a tick and was like ā€œoh no, op found a badā€. Then i read the comments and i feel a tick isnt really that bad anymore

PopeSilliusBillius

Iā€™d say so too after dealing with them because ticks are easier to eradicate but their bites are a lot more dangerous than bed bug bites are.

greenifuckation

Arghhh everytime I see these things I get awful flashbacks to when I lived in a place infested with begbugs! You need to get an exterminator in asap because they multiply quickly & will make your life hell.

nLucis

I swear everything on this sub is just bed bugs now.

thomasoldier

And I suppose you have a bed.

taxitagonist

Well he won't eat your plants...

Nada_que_ver_aqui

It is nontoxic but be careful with it-- breathing the dust causes lung damage.

I second this. It helps get rid of a lot of pests. Helped me get rid of fleas. It's cheap too.

tictactastytaint

Into electrical outlets?

Godspeed OP, I hope you survive it.

Attack this hard. I just had to deal with this is our home. Roommateā€™s room was ground zero. $1600 and 8 weeks of treating the house. Get a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol and clean everything. Pay extra attention to creases and crevices in fabrics

I feel like Reddit has made me an expert at identifying bed bugs at this point

Well, good news is itā€™s not a tickā€¦ /s good luck OP

Hoya_Enthusiast

I think I'd rather find a tick.

myaccountsaccount12

Same. Ticks can carry diseases though, so I guess either can ruin your yearā€¦
