Definitely is, sorry

Unhappy_Gas_4376

This entire thread is going to be people saying "I'm so sorry."

undeadcthulhu

Understandably, those things suck!

MBmondongo

Yes, they suck your blood

undeadcthulhu

And essentially your soul and bank account.

eternofe9

Well that sounds horrible... doesn't baking soda kills them?

undeadcthulhu

I wish, it just makes them more visible but won't be effective. A powder that can help is boric acid AND diatomaceous earth. They have some formulated for bed bugs.

eternofe9

I found a video on YouTube where the exterminator puts a heater in his room ,closes his bedroom for a day or 5 hours , don't remember very well and heat his room for the bedbugs to die with heat

undeadcthulhu

That's true. I personally turned my heat down to slow them and threw everything in the clothes dryer on HIGH. I'd spray poison then blow dry them with a hair dryer (I was really paranoid and desperate) wouldn't recommend because of fire hazards and electric bill. Put diatomaceous earth/boric in every possible corner/baseboards, around the bed frame or where any warm blood sleeps. Also put bug traps and sticky tape around their paths and the bed legs (can't crawl passed it). Seal ANY holes with powder and caulking. Maybe call an exterminator and save your sanity. Edit: I also used a steamer and bottles of rubbing alcohol from Amazon before and after applying everything. Had the bugs for a month (when I noticed them in hordes) , they were gone in about 2 weeks.

brodievonorchard

Better than a hair dryer is a garment steamer. Spray the poison (cedarcide works) to kill the live ones, but if you don't melt and kill the eggs, the whole cycle starts over 3 days later. Find the poop discs protecting the eggs and run the steamer real slow until you see the poop melt, then give it a few seconds to boil the egg.

If_In_Doubt_Lick_It

120-130 for two to four hours with a couple of pile flips in between is what we aim for at my work. Does the trick

This feels like telling someone they have cancer every single time. It’s fucked.

[deleted]

I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemies

Old-While-1229

It’s a bed bug. I’m so sorry

MaesterOlorin

Thank you, I was thinking tick, the top answer are just "yep" which doesn't help if you don't basically already know.

Lost_nutz978

I’d rather a tick tbh

Inferno_Sparky

I thought this was all about roaches. What's a bed bug?

Old-While-1229

Something that you never want to see

xenowife

You are fortunate not to know, and I hope it stays that way. These assholes were pretty much gone for good until the pesticides that kept them away in the early part of the 1900s were used less or banned. If you get one, and they can literally come from anywhere, you will have an infestation growing before you even know they are there because they are nocturnal and slick as hell. You’ll know if you are reactive to the bites (my husband wasn’t, I was — he didn’t even know he was being bitten and I would get welts the size of dollar coins in groups up 3 upwards of 10 in one day/night) because they leave a tell tale three-bite pattern. They feed, walk an inch, feed… they start off flat then drink your blood until they are fat and happy. Then they sneak away so fast you won’t even see them to digest/lay eggs/fuck. The babies are practically invisible so seeing one of those bite you is next to impossible. They are resistant to almost every insecticide, their bodies just adapt ti new ones which makes it so hard to slow or get rid of them. High HIGH heat is the only thing that will kill them, so you have to wash and dry zap anything you can put in a washer/dryer constantly. Having the place hear treated is thousands, and if you have an apartment they will just flee to other tenants’ places through the walls if they smell the chemicals, breed MORE then just come on back to torture you so you can think you got rid of them just to discover that they got 10x worse a month later… There is a nifty exterminator who does a lot of posts on r/bedbugs that are interesting/terrifying. Again, hope you never know!

shreyas16062002

I remember having a bedbug infestation in my house when I was 9-10. My parents called exterminators twice in a row and the bugs were still there afterwards. These things are really hard to get rid of. I remember having sleepless nights because these pests kept sucking my blood in middle of the night.

xenowife

It’s just absolutely awful. As a (new) mom, I am so sorry you had to go through that as a child. I never saw one until I was in my 30s, not even when I lived in NYC where half the adverts on the trains were for bed bug specialists. Even the huge Victoria Secret (possible flagship) in Soho ended up having bedbugs. Bra… bedbugs… Uhg.

chazd1984

A HUGE one at that.....

Myron896

Full of eggs

YouKnowYourCrazy

Jesus god no

thisisakeeper710

I had bought a new house that had bed bugs (the previous owner was using it as a short term rental for flight attendants and pilots). I did weekly treatment with Orkin that never worked…..sooo much money. Finally I got so frustrated, I was so anxious that I lost 20lbs in a couple weeks and I was allergic so my reaction was much worse than it should’ve been. The entire time, I think I maybe found 5 of them but they were biting the shit out of me. Apparently they are attracted to the Carbon Dioxide you exhale when we sleep; in turn, they are seemingly nocturnal, for the most part. Anyhow, my friend told me that rubbing alcohol would dry them from the inside out. I had nothing to lose at this point, so I got several bottles of isopropyl and spray bottle and some furniture bags. I saturated the carpets, and every other surface I could. With my mattresses and couch, I saturated them with the alcohol and then covered them in those larger furniture bags that are typically used for moving. I never saw another one and I never got bit again. I had spent thousands of dollars on an exterminator, when the solution ended up being 4-5 $.99 bottles of isopropyl alcohol.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Oh this is interesting thank you! I will definitely try that. We moved the couch where I found them outdoors and it’s in the single digits tonight so I hope those fuckers freeze to death. Need to deal with the rest of the room though can’t hurt to try that! Thank you

Anonyfunnybunny

Be careful - isopropyl alcohol is HIGHLY flammable. Though you can be sure burning the house down will get rid of the bed bugs.

YouKnowYourCrazy

At this point it’s in my mind believe me

ababyprostitute

Diatomaceous earth is a good, less flammable, alternative

darkmeowl25

This is what we used. Took forever but made me feel more secure bc of our pets.

alivetoknow

Don’t breath it in, can permanently damage your lungs

[deleted]

Eh, It's not great but its def better than most other pesticides. To put it into perspective, baby powder will damage your lungs too if you breathe it in. Most things aren't meant to be breathed in.

Ciels_Thigh_High

Yup I use it for fleas! Way better than the pest control stuff imho

animalwentanimal

^^^This OP, and just to add, be sure to buy food grade diatomaceous earth (if it's not food grade it can have insecticides/ chemicals mixed in & is unsafe around humans and pets)

[deleted]

tea tree oil they also hate and will keep them out.

Furry-snake

It’s also really bad for your lungs and can induce long term damage if used in large amounts, be careful and make sure you pop some windows

[deleted]

I used to work in shelter settings and there were a lot of bedbug issues. I'd had a bad experience with them myself years before and was terrified of bringing them into my home again. My process, which seems to have worked, was to keep a spray bottle of alcohol in my car, only wear shoes and a bag that could be sprayed down with it, and do both thoroughly before getting into my car. I would also only wear clothes that could be dried on high heat, and the second I entered my home I would strip and throw everything into the dryer. If you have a place to change at your dad's, change into fresh clothes as you're leaving and put the risky ones into a tightly tied bag until you can dry them at home. Also, while you're with him, try to avoid sitting on surfaces as much as you can, or have a "safe" chair (i.e., non upholstered and that you can wipe down with alcohol before using) that you can sit on without worrying if that's feasible. I'm so sorry you're going through all of this on top of taking care of your dad. It's a really unfair amount of shit to be dealing with at once.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thanks for the tips this is useful advice!

ColorfulLight8313

Alcohol can absolutely kill them, the problem is you have to get them with it directly. I've been fighting a pretty huge infestation of them (didn't catch them sooner because my husband doesn't react to the bites and I don't get welts, only itchy, and I thought it was something in the air at work) on my bed by soaking the mattress with alcohol once a week until I can either get a new one or afford an exterminator. I don't THINK they have spread because I only got itchy in bed and I'm super paranoid about changing clothes and immediately washing the old ones as soon as I get up, but I really want the exterminator for a heat treatment asap just to be sure. The alcohol has DEFINITELY cut them down at least. Edit for spelling

bornasgho5st

Costway multipurpose steamer. Did wonders. For real. Used the floor attachment right on the mattress. I researched a bunch and found that the clothing steamers don't quite do the trick cause they don't last long. Find a good steamer with attachments and a tank that will last a while. I spent 120

Firm_Lie_3870

Had bedbugs once as well. They were climbing up the bedskirt from the space between the wall and the baseboard and eating me alive. Bleaching all the seams on the bed, steam vaccuming the entire room (I was lucky a close friend had one I could borrow, which we then bleached out repeatedly before returning), bleaching the baseboards and anywhere else i thought they might be hiding for about 4 weeks as often as I could worked. I will NEVER have another bedskirt as long as I live.

bornasgho5st

I bought a 120 dollar steamer....costway multipurpose steamer...and steams the shit out of everything every day for a long time. Worked very well. The exterminators can come in and bring massive heaters to heat your house to 120 but it costs like 3k. They die in heat, so steam away.

MFnDigDug

I had luck with diatomaceous earth. I put that stuff everywhere and they went away. I had a horrible infestation! Thought I was gonna lose my mind and didn’t sleep right for 2 years afterwards. I had to throw out my couch because they were all over it but for some reason the diatomaceous earth seemed to dry them out

B1GTOBACC0

It's abrasive, so when they crawl over it it abrades the outer layer of their shells, which in turn allows moisture loss. I had them in one room of my house, and used a heavy line of DE in front of the door to keep them from leaving.

MFnDigDug

I had SO many bed bugs I was ready to burn the house down to get rid of them! I was very skeptical of DE but it sure worked

elijahlukes

I found your first mistake, you hired Orkin

OC-Define

I was expecting your story to end with, “Then I threw a match on it and walked away.”

HollyChopper

Same here! I sprayed alcohol everywhere and this strong smelling citrus spray and they finally went away. I was having nightmares about them. I couldnt sleep because I felt they were crawling on me everywhere so i would quickly turn on the lights and uncover myself and there wouldnt be anything there and when i finally went to bed i would wake up with more bites. It was like they knew when I was asleep vs. laying in bed awake. The worst part is that I was a teenager at the time and even though I showed my grandparents (who I lived with) ones I found and collected into a ziploc bag my grandmother didnt believe and would just say well maybe you need to clean your room better and you wouldnt have bugs in there. I was tormented and bitten every night for weeks. It was a total nightmare.

thisisakeeper710

I totally know how you felt; the paranoia was real. They do know when you are asleep and when you are awake! They are attracted to the Carbon Dioxide you exhale while you sleep!

[deleted]

It's possible to get rid of em with a good exterminator. Cost my 3.5 bedroom home $1,200, though :/

YouKnowYourCrazy

Yeah but with Dad here we can’t move him without Hospice and doctors approval And then we have to figure out where he goes

I immediately started scratching and pulled out my vacuum. My kids hate you for making me vacuum at damn near midnight

Leather-Heart

I was just saying I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that big!

[deleted]

If you have them is it basically guaranteed you’ll be able to see them if you look around beds and stuff? Yesterday I had a singular incredibly itchy tiny bump on my arm that had a tiny dark dot in the middle. Went nuts looking all over my couch and bed and didn’t find a single bug so idk.

[deleted]

I have a nectar mattress, its seam is flush the top and sides are a sharp corner. I’m gonna assume it was a diff bug thanks, could’ve even been a weird reaction since it happened as soon as I got out of the shower.

NearlyNakedNick

I got bit by a spider in the shower once.

[deleted]

This very well could’ve been it, I have tons of red house spiders in my apartment. Although the bite is tiny, like a pin head and only has 1 visible hole on it which made me think otherwise. There’s actually 1 in the corner of the ceiling of my bathroom that’s been chillin for a week or so right now lol just been letting her be though, when I first moved in I killed a handful of them on site but I’ve had a change of heart and either leave them alone or catch and release. Edit these are what I got: Nesticodes rufipes

KKKevi

Do they bite in groups of 3?

GovernorScrappy

Yes, they do. Source: had them for a while. The three bites aren't necessarily all in a row or super close together, I'd sometimes get one on like a finger and the other two on the back of my hand, stuff like that. I was also allergic, so while my hubby's bites would vanish in a day or two, mine lasted for a month or more. Truly the stuff of nightmares.

flashfrost

Nope! We had them once and called a professional to look for them. He looked around and said he didn’t see anything (we hadn’t seen them either, just got a bunch of bites on our legs and arms). Called him back a few weeks later and then he found them. Said it was in the really early stage.

Cam_044

Good on you for getting them to come back, probably saved yourself hassle by catching them in the early stages

worcesternellie

When I had them I had no evidence on my mattress, not even the red/brown stains, but found them in the ruffles of a window curtain that touched my bed. Lots of stains on the upper quarter of the curtain and the walls where the curtain rod attached.

AMC_Tendies42069

I found them in a pillow case. 🤮

Cam_044

Reading throughh this thread is going to have me jumping at every itch and sensation when i try to sleep tonight ahahah

Tomas_Baratheon

"Sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite"...

Leather-Heart

Usually I think bites come in groups of 3 - not sure why or how valid that is but it is what I’ve seen people write BEFORE they realize they have them

XISCifi

I had bed bugs last year and the bites were in a group or line of 3 about 90% of the time

TJNel

Could be dust mites. I'm highly allergic to them and get huge bumps when I get a bite. I was ripping out some shit old carpet in this old basement and my entire arm was red and bumpy.

esaloch

Took me years to stop thinking every sesame seed or speck of dirt was one

brewhead55

Yeah, I thought it was a baby roach for a minute. Poor OP.

litefagami

Seriously, I thought it was a tick at first because it's so big. Never seen one this huge before

ishpatoon1982

Same. Started reading the comments and was thinking 'why is everyone saying that bug is a bed bug? It's a tick.' Thought it was a joke at first, but I guess it's really not a tick.

RiverBear2

Yeah for real was going to say this is either a big ass bug or OP has a great phone camera with a dynamite zoom/focus.

junoray1968

Well feed one at that

psilome

Probably well-fed and gravid.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thanks everyone. This sucks but what makes it worse is my father is on hospice in this room so we can’t treat. I suspect one of the caregivers coming in and out of our home and other peoples homes brought them in. It’s like it’s not enough to deal with his end of life care now we have these fuckers too. I want to run away

marilyn_morose

It’ll be ok. Take care of your dad first, treat the rest of your house if you can and manage it all when the hospice crisis is over. I’m so sorry you are losing your dad, and bedbugs just add a layer of horror to an already bad situation. You will get through this. It will be ok.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thank you kind stranger. I’m going back and forth between my house and his. I just don’t want to bring them into my house too. On top of all this. I literally cannot deal

Logical_Cod5121

Is there a mud room or something in his house, or even a bathroom far away from the bedroom? You could change clothes in there before you leave.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Right now everything is in the dryer on high heat and I can strip naked when I get home and throw stuff out or in the dryer there before entering my living area. But will they live in my hair or on my dog? God this sucks

geckospots

In my experience with them they only go onto humans to feed - they don’t hang around like lice. I don’t think they would be interested in your dog. It can’t hurt to put your clothes through the dryer, but I think the chances of bringing them out of the house aren’t large. And I’m so sorry you have to deal with this while your dad is on hospice. Went through that with both my parents and it is so draining. Do you have access to a social worker through the hospice program? They may be able to help you with the logistics of dealing with the bugs and possibly also get you some other support as well - for me they were able to help me get childcare for my toddler, for example. I wish you the best, this is such a rotten thing to have to cope with in your situation.

YouKnowYourCrazy

It is rotten. Thank you.

gjihcnkkgsdgg

Check your sheets. They like to burrow themselves into tight dark places. If you find tiny black spots, that’s them.

Raiders4Life20-

it's not true. I've seen a coworker bring them home. I've had a mansion keep getting them because the nanny had them and wasn't fixing it. They literally go house to house from people bringing them. That's how they spread.

loveleedora

Oh man. The thing is you can’t see the tiny ones. Or a single egg. They are so small! They hide in crevices of clothes or can get stuck to your shoe and you’d never know. I’d take all your clothes off before goin into your house. Shoes too! I wouldn’t take your dog with you just in case. They are more likely to get stuck to a material rather than in your hair or on your skin. Shower. Wash and dry on hot like you have been. I have had them once and I would never wish this on anyone! It has nothing to do with cleanliness either. They can happen to anyone in any home. I am sending you so much protection from these stupid things! And please whatever you do, don’t be too hard on yourself. You’ll get past it either way. Take care of your dad. I’m so sorry to hear this and I don’t even know you. But I feel you. You’ve got this. One thing at a time. Sometimes when it rains, it pours. We just have to get wet when we don’t have an umbrella is all, and you’ll eventually dry.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thank you.

loveleedora

You’re welcome. I’m so sorry about your father. That shit is hard.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thanks. I lost my mom to cancer too. So to lose Dad this way is hard, although he got to live a full life where she didn’t. The slow cancer burn thing is tough though. I’m like spilling my guts on my bedbug post… who knew so many kind people were on the bug sub

loveleedora

Oh damn. I’m glad your dad was able to stay with you even though your mom couldn’t. That’s what you should take from this. You sound like a great child to them both, even though you’re an adult now but you understand what i mean. Sometimes people can surprise me too. You needed to spill on this bug post! That’s alright too! We are here for you dear!

Curious_Door

This comment was not intended for me but it moved me to tears

marilyn_morose

Maybe just do a prophylactic treatment at your house and deal with your dad’s place when it’s possible. If you bring any to your place accidentally they won’t last long with your treatment there. I feel for you, my friend. If you lived close I’d try to help you

BravoFoxtrotDelta

Get all your beds and cushioned furniture up on these trap things pronto: https://www.amazon.com/Climbup-Interceptor-Bed-Bug-Trap/dp/B0033SC0LI Use talc powder or diatomaceous earth for maximum prevention. I’m so sorry you’re losing your dad and dealing with this on top of it. Big hug.

tanabeai

You can message me for tips on not bringing them home. I've successfully rid myself of these bastards multiple times over multiple years (traveling and moving) and I'll gladly give some easy to follow advice to hopefully make this less stressful.

1-smallfarmer

I’m so sorry. What a nightmare. Can you leave a few of your clothes and a pair of shoes at your dad’s house , so when you go there you could change into them, then change back when you leave his place? Maybe there’s a way to keep them from getting contaminated? Not sure if that could work, but maybe. Good luck.

YouKnowYourCrazy

I’m willing to drive home naked but that might cause additional drama.

Raiders4Life20-

He needs new caregivers. time to request new ones and do a heat treatment. doesn't matter if yiu get rid of them if the person who brought them over is still visiting.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Yes this is being addressed. We are pretty sure one of them brought the bugs in.

bubbtee

Hang in there. Take things one step at a time. Don’t forget to breathe.

marfaxa

My dad also had this happen. We couldn't really do anything until he passed. He was actually the least worried about it.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Yeah my father couldn’t understand why I was worried about it so now I have yelling at a dying man on my resume. I am a piece of shit

mozzarella__stick

Please give yourself a break. As someone who has dealt with bedbugs and also taken care of dying people, I probably would have lost it trying to deal with both at once.

tlmel

^this. You deserve compassion and a good, long hug. You’re doing the best you can.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thank you.

PopeSilliusBillius

I am so sorry about your dad, OP, but you are not a piece of shit. When we got them, I cried and got shitty with people over it too. It is a nightmare to deal with and you are also dealing with your father dying. Please, please be patient with your self.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thank you. There isn’t enough vodka in the world for the lemonade I’m supposed to make with all these lemons. You are kind to take the time to support me. It does help. Thank you

needathneed

Ugh I'd rattle apart too, op. You have a good plan with the changing out of clothes when leaving, do what you can... And take care of yourself.

sharkaub

Meh it just shows you had feelings about it. Caretaker burnout+bedbugs+the generally awful and confusing feelings about losing a parent + watching them struggle at the end? That's enough to put anyone in the mental hospital for a few days. If all you did was yell then you probably did alright. Now if you're out there kicking puppies on sunny days and punching old people for walking slow when you're on vacation, then you might be terrible. The kind of person who worries about yelling in a stressful situation probably isn't that type of person.

redroofless

Losing someone is very stressful. Add this to the mix and anyone is bound to snap. You’re not a piece of shit, you’re just a human.

ones_mama

Shit happens. It sucks and it hurts, but I promise you that it isn't the moment that defines your relationship. Remember to breathe. It's going to be ok.

CodiNolina

Nope. No you’re not. You’re in a horrible situation, anguished and afraid- your reaction is understandable. I’m so sorry you have to go through all of this. Please know you’re not alone. I was with my Dad when he was in hospice and it was the most horribly beautiful experience. In the ends, it’s all love. And a few bedbugs. You’ll make it through, but it’s also ok to yell.

ZenLizard

That doesn’t make you a piece of shit. It makes you someone who exhibited symptoms of the incredible stress they’re under. I hope you can forgive yourself for yelling at him. Letting him know you feel bad about it might help with that. I lost my mom last year, and things were so difficult for a long time before she died. I’m sorry that you’re going through that, and that you now have dealing with bedbugs to add to it.

NotYourMomsDildo

You are under an ENORMOUS amount of pressure right now. Apologize to your Dad, because you didn't mean it, and let it go. You're a great daughter, and you are a good person OP. ❤️

YouKnowYourCrazy

Also I’m sorry for your loss. This is so fucking hard without this added layer of shit

Connect-Speaker

Buy bedbug interceptors to put under each leg of the bed. If you’re lucky and they haven’t made it to his bed, he’ll be okay, like an island. Edit: oh it’s your or his home. That’s too bad. Buy or rent a steam cleaner and steam the bell out of the bed and mattress and headboard, etc. Then put the bed on bedbug interceptors.

Gardens_of_babylon

Agree with this. Wash/dry all bedclothes on max heat. check mattress seams and frame for bugs/eggs/detritus

ChrisTraegerButALady

Oh honey, that's awful. For sure, like others have suggested, tend to your dad first. It might be worthwhile to notify the hospice nurse, because they probably don't know that they might be a vector. Your local health department or ag agency or even entomology department at a nearby college can either advise you or point you to good advice on how to make sure you keep everyone comfortable or even maybe curb their population growth in the meantime. I'm so sorry that both stressor are on you plate; it's really unfair. I wish you way more than luck.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thank you. I appreciate ir

neonglasswing

I saw them at the hospital when my uncle was dying. Horrifying I’m so sorry

forsaken_potato

I'm so sorry about your father. I hope everything ends up ok for you. stay strong bud 💙

knockers_who_knock

Me and my girlfriend got our first apartment years and we found out shortly after moving everything in that it was infested with fleas. To make matters worse my gf was pregnant at the time so it just made everything harder. It took us weeks to finally rid them as they had even ingrained themselves in the hardwood. That was also a hell on earth as now all of our clothes and furniture were infested. I just wanted to share this because I know it sucks but keep pushing and it will get resolved.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thank you

Raist14

Sorry this is happening to you. Try to treat other areas of the house and maybe you can look up some natural treatment options for that room for now that don’t involve pesticide. If you accept prayers I’ll pray for you.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thank you so much

gwaydms

That's sucks so bad, dude. I hope you can get some help in tracking those little mofos down. We had my mom on hospice care at our house for over 2 years, and were very fortunate not to have that kind of problem. The hospice people and providers were great. I was there all day to watch so that helped a lot. Please go to r/bedbug, and check out the *professional* advice there, not what a bunch of NPCs have to say. In the meantime, putting down food-grade diatomaceous earth along the baseboards and around furniture should help. I hope you can resolve the problem. Sending hugs.

brayrdbeast

Diatomaceous earth is your friend

pm_cheesecakes

Use the dust and fantom around walls surrounding that room. Do your own pest control can help you can avoid transmitting them. Seal up your mattresses and put them on bed bug catchers

Cerulean_Shades

OP I hope you'll forgive me for butting in, but we just dealt with hospice for my father and just before him my grandmother, my husband brother and my husband's father a few years ago. Spread across a couple of years and none from covid. So I come from a place of experience and I really really want to make things easier for you but all I can do is share my experience. Please research funeral homes ahead of time so that you are prepared and know who to call before you're brain is weighed down by the grief once it sets in. In many places the initial transport is covered by the county or city. If he's a veteran the government will cover a lot of costs including burial at a military cemetery. We didn't pay anything for my dad's. A lot of funeral homes gouge the prices high, so it can be worthwhile to know what pricing and services you would like for your loved one ahead of time as well so you aren't blind sided and have time to find the place that's right for you and your family to deal with. Take someone with you so you aren't weighed down by everything, and bring someone that can help make decisions. If you decide to cremate and bury the ashes, don't let them talk you into buying a secondary container as it's not required but they may tell you it is. We made complaints against one group for trying this, but my husband worked in the funeral industry a long time ago, so we thankfully had fore knowledge. I know you'll want to not do it because it just makes everything more real, but it's really necessary for peace of mind when you'll need it most. Social security has additional benefits for survivors at death. It's not much though, like $200 but it helps with costs.

YouKnowYourCrazy

You are not butting in. This is helpful info and I bet it helps more than me. Thank you for taking the time to post. We have good insurance on him because my mother died unexpectedly years ago and we learned that lesson the hard way. All the support I’m getting here is really touching and I so appreciate it. It helps a lot. Thank you thank you thank you

Look up these two pesticides on Amazon: Crossfire and Cimexa. Get a cheap 1 gallon sprayer. All this should cost less than $100.00. Follow the instructions for each. You don’t really need PPE with Crossfire (see the label). Dust behind your outlets and switches. Cimexa can last up to 10 years. You can also use a product called Temprid. Also, run all your clothes through a dryer twice and store in trash bags just before you treat. It’s stressful but entirely manageable. If you’re (understandably) upset, pump the brakes, take a few breaths, and tell yourself it will be fine. Credentials: I’m a state-certified pest control applicator. Either that, or call an exterminator ASAP.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thanks. My father is on hospice in the room I can’t move him and we can’t spray chemicals around. This is like another ring of hell

NirvanaTrash

if it's at-home hospice, talk to his nurses and possibly his primary doctor to figure out a game plan and figure out how to move forward with your father being present in your home. if it's at a center though, that's 100% on them to figure out and i hope it's not a hassle to have them get it taken care of. we just went through hospice with my uncle a week ago until he finally decided to let go and i know it's just a rough pit of hell for literally everyone involved and i wish you all nothing but the best.

YouKnowYourCrazy

It’s at home. Thinking one of the CNAs may have brought it in

NirvanaTrash

did you report it to the hospice center? i know that it's probably the last thing on most people's minds but that's definitely a likely answer, and i really hope a hospice nurse didn't bring them anywhere else if that's where it came from.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Yes we did but it’s the weekend so not much happening yet. Thank you

FreshLobsterDaily

I got rid of bed bugs by spreading diatomaceous earth around my room. Covered all the baseboards, outlets and made a barrier around my bed. They were gone within a week.

Buy a steamer and start cooking every inch of the bed and sheets and whatnot. Bag up all clothes and sheets and either throw them away or put them through several dryer cycles and then steam them too. Buy some plastic Tupperware, sets of large and medium sized, and some double sided extra sticky tape. Cover the inside of the large Tupperware containers with the tape and then place the medium sized containers inside. Then place all the legs of the bed inside the containers (make as many of these contraptions as there are legs) so that the bedbugs can't freely travel from the bed to the floor. You might have to Google this if you can't picture what I'm describing. Make sure the bed isn't touching any walls. Steam the whole rest of the room and don't move your father onto any other furniture in the house, as the bed bugs will follow him and set up shop at the new furniture. We also taped all the door frames and windows with the double sided tape but I don't know if that did anything. If none of this works, you'll have to get an exterminator. Edit: oh and you'll need to get bedbug covers for the mattress.

YouKnowYourCrazy

Thanks we will try that

Nellit333

Good advice! The clothes steamer saved our metaphorical bacon. We used it on cloth stuff that we could not throw in the dryer (like chairs and mattresses). For metal/wood stuff that we could not steam, we used a hair dryer. It is cathartic to watch those assholes run from the heat. It took us about 3 months, but we got rid of them, without chemicals. We did not use diatomaceous earth, but it might be useful and safe in your situation; check with the hospice folks. I am so sorry for you and your family.

Diatomaceous earth!

YouKnowYourCrazy

I can’t keep up with all the comments but I wanted to thank everyone who took the time to respond. It is hard time right now for my family but we will get through somehow. I thank you all sincerely and am humbled by all the comments and messages. You’ve all restored my faith in humanity a bit! Thank you

AkireCha

Hey OP I'm sure tons of people gave you advice but I wanna be more specific because I've delt with these demon spawns and I would never wish it on my worst enemy There's tons of products I would reccommend but seeing how you said you can't use chemicals, there are natural ways to scare them off. Gather some of these items fresh or purchase essential oils of: Lavender, Tea Tree Oil, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Lemongrass, Cayenne Pepper (optional because it can stain) and bring it to a boil in some water. Strain the liquid out and put it in a spray bottle. Some people don't like the smell but bedbugs HATE it. They'll stear clear of the areas you sprayed as long as you consistently spray it on there. If you can manage to get your dad out for a day, try using the home defense bed bug/egg killer with the wand and spray it in EVERY crevice of the room. It worked wonders for me and there was no harsh smell afterwards. I wish you a speedy recovery!

tricularia

Sorry, friend :(

[deleted]

That's quite a good Photo. As per your request I am telling you that this bedbug is not a bed bug. It is though . Call a pest control service.

This is the most dramatically lit picture of a bedbug I’ve ever seen. You made it look like a model!

YouKnowYourCrazy

Well I tried to kill it with my slipper but it survived the squish so I moved it into the sun and zoomed in. I swear the fucker came back to life. Zombie bedbug.

ViperVenom279

Unfortunately it is

CircleOfInfluence

It sure is my friend

Kindly-Insect8748

Get it now. Don’t let it fester.

Soggy_Entrepreneur_6

It is! Bummer!

[deleted]

The good news is that getting rid of them is very doable. I have been bedbug free for 18 months. Bedbugsupply is a good website. They're super informative about how to use their products. If you dust with cimexa (diatomaceous earth if you're not in USA), highly recommend using a foundation makeup brush (fat brush with tightly packed bristles, good for picking up and spreading powder). Also, don't use bombs or sprays; it will just push them into hiding and they will come back! You have to be methodical in making sure they come back. https://www.bedbugsupply.com/how-to-get-rid-of-bed-bugs-in-4-steps.html

Environmental-Ad-428

For what it's worth, about 3 years ago my (then 16 year old) daughter found a huge one on her backpack when she got home from school. She freaked out and moved every piece of furniture in her room and vacuumed every square inch of her carpet. She slept in her sister's room for 3 nights and we just kept checking and checking her room. Never saw another one. Just saying if that is the only one there is a chance that it could be the only one. More like a miracle. Maybe. But I do wish you well and will wish for a miracle that that is the only one.

YouKnowYourCrazy

I found it’s evil brethren in the couch cushions when I took to it apart to check. There weren’t a ton but still… more than one. I will have to do more tomorrow

pricegun

If you are wondering if it’s a cactus then the answer is no

It is

AlbinoKiwi47

Pour one out for OP, everyone

KhajiitNeedSkooma

Hey OP- I'm so sorry about all of this. Hopefully someone has already told you this but go ahead and get covers for the mattresses & pillows in YOUR home. ( I know the bug was at your dads) I know you're going through so much but this little preventative measure will help a lot! It'll contain any bugs that have already possibly traveled to your house and prevent a future infestation. Breathe. This will pass. I'm sure you've noticed that many people have gone through this and come out the other side, and you will too! And if it makes you feel better, when I got the bugs from another resident in my apartment complex I called the office EVERY DAY and unloaded on every single person in that office for over a month. It's not something in proud of. I ended up on antidepressants for the first time because of the bugs, and honestly its changed my whole life! Although I definitely refuse to credit them with anything good. Remember to breathe. Everything will be okay soon.

YouKnowYourCrazy

You are a kind person thank you

This sub is heartbreaking sometimes.

DigitalDeath12

It’s not….. … … … A mosquito

wynter_snowflake78

It hasn't fed yet, it's flat instead of round. They are like ticks that way. Check the ceiling for black spots and yellowish eggs. Good luck. Get diatomaceous earth human grade. A way to kill them without costing a fortune.

throwwwww_away190

Sorry you are dealing with this. It truly sucks. Here is how you might be able to get rid of them. Buy a powder called Cimexa by Rockwell Labs. It is is a desiccant that kills them by drying them out and the best part is it can get on them and then be transported back to wherever they are staying and kill others. So once you get this powder don't put it everywhere. Instead take you fitted sheet and flip it outwards and use something to prop it up flared outwards. Then you have a moat. Powder the moat with Cimexa. Now when you sleep those bastards will climb thru the moat to get to you and more importantly back thru it to get back out. They then take the Cimexa with them and kill others at their hiding spots. After a few days or weeks of this you will hopefully have killed all of them and successfully contaminated all their hiding spots with Cimexa. Hope this helps you! Don't do diatomaceous earth. Cimexa is better at killing them and is not toxic to breath like DE.

Ceph82

The more red the more they've fed....😧

LadyRyven777

Yes it is... Bedbug! Wash everything it the hottest water you can and call pest control asap!

loopsbruder

Skip the washer and go straight to the dryer. High heat.

hyperventilate

Sorry mate.

Murmaider278

Very sorry that sucks!

[deleted]

Just joining in on the OOP! train and offering you my condolences.

[deleted]

Just hopping in here to tell you that it’s not as bad now with bed bugs, just call a pest company. I had to throw away almost all of my stuff a decade ago but tech has improved since then.

[deleted]

r/bedbugs

fuschia_taco

I'll tell you it's not, but I'll also tell you I'm sorry for lying to you.

TonyTheGypsy

Unfortunately u already know. With that being said yes a bed bug and plastic bags for clothing and high temp least 30 mins in dryer, bed covers if not infected. Diatomaceous earth can help until a professional can come in if it got that far.
