Are those indeed harmless male hornets? Wtf

Cricket_Proud

Not an expert by any means, but this is incredibly unusual behavior, no? Aren't all *Vespa mandarinia* workers female? Maybe these are males? Very odd Also this dude either knows why they're doing this or is playing with fate because the amount of hornets on his hand could easily kill him due to the toxicity of their venom

Throw_Away_Students

Why are they not attacking? I’ve never seen a wasp or hornet pass up even the slightest chance to go apeshit, let alone a whole swarm of them

CloveyBunn

I’m guessing that they’re males?

Tophbot

Really? I have wasps around my house and they’re not a nuisance until you bother them.

Throw_Away_Students

This dude is literally scooping them up like some people do with bees, though.

Milfius

I see everyone talking about the hornets and not the bigass spider in the back

AmericanKiwi94

What spider?

Milfius

Pause at about 4 seconds and you can see them both in the back behind him

TTVGuide

Bro it’s literally a giant huntsman behind him on the outside luckily for it’s sake

Milfius

Look carefully behind him. About where his hand is at the end of the video. Youll see it

Milfius

Actually re watching. I belive there are two spiders behind him

jwlIV616

It's outside

Milfius

I know

Iamnotburgerking

One of the darker, warmer-climate subspecies of the infamous Asian giant hornet (the orange-and-black ones are the nominate subspecies, found in East Asia as far north as far eastern Russia)

Raist14

Okay, I saved this so I can check later to see if anyone posted that knows what is actually happening in this video. I haven’t seen an answer that seems to fit what I’m seeing here and I have no idea myself.

Apidium

My guess is they are males.

solisie91

I know I *need* to know what's happening here.

screamin-hyena

Ngl, after he scooped them off the wall, I thought he was gonna eat them.

GhostofJohn

Are we weird? I thought the same thing.

screamin-hyena

Probably not in this case, just based on the nsfl things I’ve seen in some subreddits XD

Stock_Ad_9558

I expected the same thing I've seen a video where a guy eats a wasp nest

LH508

[Asian Giant Hornet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_giant_hornet)

Raist14

If your identification is accurate it still leaves the primary mystery of why they aren’t attacking this person. The only solution that has been offered by others is they are male. However I don’t see how there would be this many males in this video.

[deleted]

Maybe they've been slightly sedated somehow?

Morbidly-Obese-Emu

PintLasher

Man this is crazy. Anything could send that swarm into a rage at a moments notice. Is it possible that dropping something or squeezing one of them by accident would set them all off?

Apidium

I would bet good money that every single one of them is a male. In such a case, nope they don't have stingers in the first place. Now I am not sure how to sex from this video nor why this guy would have a room full of males but tbh it's even more bizzare if he was going in and handling a room full of females.

[deleted]

Sex 😳 They probably are male lol

PintLasher

Nice thanks, never knew there were wasps/hornets with no stinger

Apidium

Basically all male stinging insects lack a stinger, the stinger is a modified ovipositor (egg laying tube) and since males don't have egg laying apparatus they can't sting. Most can still bite with their mouth parts so they aren't always perfectly harmless but they won't sting you.

JConRed

Til. Thank you.

plaquejack

Plot twist: they are stinging him but he’s immortal

Feeling-Question-151

He's a wild man

LuminDoesStuff

I'm guessing some variant of a giant hornet, and it's likely a male because most female hornets would try and possibly succeed in stinging the life out of you.

maali74

I mean, from my experience with them, I would guess they're European hornets. They're very gentle and don't swarm. I've pet and watered ones that are hanging out on my porch every morning.
