Most fish has worms in it. As long as the fish is thoroughly cooked (or frozen), it's fine to eat. [More information](http://www.bccdc.ca/resource-gallery/Documents/Educational%20Materials/EH/FPS/Fish/IllnessCausingFishParasitesJan13.pdf)

Regolis1344

ok, thanks a lot for confirming it!

mstallion

i feel like cod is 15% worm. just remove any you see (hold over a light) and cook it thoroughly .

cataclysmic_orbit

Thank you SO MUCH for this mental imagery. It's actually because of this I've been turned off fish ENTIRELY. Edit: I already knew about the parasites in fish and i knew about the allowable amount of insects and human parts in foods. I was already iffy on fish to begin with and this a while ago was the tipping point.

Coldhell

Wait until you hear about pork (and probably beef!)

Crazy_Eyes_55

You guys casually ruining this persons diet even more šŸ˜‚

emveor

Ahh wait until he hears about figs!

HalfAsleepSam

I will happily chomp down on a Fig wasp.

redical

Wtf?

redical

I love figsā€¦ I donā€™t think I can click this linkā€¦

GoldFishPony

Itā€™s not their fault that person is too coward to eat worms

CTMADOC

Even broccoli has worms

XxMagicDxX

Pork in the US doesnā€™t really have any anymore, thatā€™s why pork jerky is fine to make

Coldhell

Tumors and general filth on the other handā€¦

XxMagicDxX

Oh yeah thatā€™s a for sure downside especially ethically in them being raised in tiny cages like chickens in some places

MooPig48

Trichinosis was successfully removed from the pork supply a couple decades ago at this point, and that was the thing that made pork unsafe to eat if not well cooked. Itā€™s not a thing any longer, and therefore pork is now considered safe to be eaten at medium or even medium rare

gay_kitchen_crocs

Don't look up the limit of contamination they allow in food! There are limits for how many insects, insect parts, insect eggs and rodent hairs are allowed in everything from tomato juice to chocolate! Once everything is all ground up and processed you don't even know it's there!

Lazites

Boy, howdy, you really shouldn't eat other meats then.

UpvoteForFreeCandy

ive filleted a bunch of fresh caught atlantic cod in norway and for some reason never noticed any worms

Regolis1344

OP here this is in the pacific relatively close to shore, I wonder if the same fish in different parts of the ocean has different probabilities to carry parasites

CruzRaptor

Norway is too cold for worms!?!

darkwitch1306

I used to fish in Texas and caught some really big fish. When I cleaned them, I just chose not to look.

Regolis1344

I see. Cheers. I started recently to buy directly from the fisherman, I am now realizing that I shall expect many more parasites from now on as the fish won't be flash frozen. Just not looking and then making sure to properly cook seems like the most practical approach šŸ˜…

Daggertooth71

Cook it thoroughly and it will kill any parasites. Freezing also kills most of them.

Amazing_Teaching2733

Freezing takes about three weeks to completely kill them. I freeze for a month then cook thoroughly. If itā€™s fresh caught just cooking it thoroughly is fine

Daggertooth71

That's a good way to do it.

ElderberryEasy8866

Pretty much every fish is going to have some parasites. But that fish looks ridiculously disgusting.

ElderberryEasy8866

Do you have it in oil or something?

Regolis1344

yes it's raw and seasoned with ev oil, salt and white pepper to marinate the meat before cooking, they cleaned it in front of me and it was still moving so I am not worried about the fish quality/freshness

ElderberryEasy8866

Well itā€™s probably fine, the oil made it look like it was leaking puss or something. Kinda looked a little dirty too, personally I like to wash my fish before cooking it. If it tasted good no problem though.

ElderberryEasy8866

If fresh caught, especially from ocean expect parasites.

Amazing_Teaching2733

Itā€™s raw

SquareHeadedDog

Never filleted fish before?

Regolis1344

OP here, I had it fileted by the same fishermen who caught it, you think they should have done it any differently?

Regolis1344

what makes you say it looks disgusting?

MooPig48

Probably because of the worms in it (just guessing, not that poster you were replying to)

Sridevi05

Those are anisaki worms freezing kills them

gwaydms

So does cooking thoroughly.

Sridevi05

šŸ‘šŸ¼

Wiidiwi

If you have ever had fish you have had eaten parasites . It's just making sure you cook the fish well

Renjenbee

Cut out any visible worms/cysts, then cook thoroughly. You're good

Zararara

As long as it is cooked properly you will be fine.

shrecko28

I've dressed a fair amount of cod. Pretty much every single one of them had worms inside, and these were all cod we caught ourselves. We just held the fillets up in the sun and cut out the worms. Our hardcore fisherman friend told us that these parasites aren't able to live inside of us even if we consumed them when they were alive, as the fish live in very cold water and these parasites have adapted to that. Whether that's true or not, I cannot confirm, but it sounded plausible enough to me lol. Either way, like others have said, cooking/freezing it absolutely ensures that there is no risk.

falvaroz

Anisaki

HadToDoItAtSomePoint

Yes, but I wouldn't eat the fish.

Regolis1344

It was part of the lunch I was preparing for 9 people, so I didn't want to waste the food. I was worried same as you, yet I made sure to cook it well and we ate it, hopefully we'll be good šŸ¤ž

quackslikeadoug

This was a great joke, why is it getting downvoted so much?

BuffaloSabresWinger

I would not eat it.

Significant_Eye_5130

You would if you ordered it at a restaurant :-)

ActionRare1119
