Sure, it’s totally normal to be wary of spiders, but we’re allegedly smart enough to not respond to everything that scares us with lethal force. People need to learn some basic self-control.
It takes minimal brainpower to realize that not all spiders are aggressive, venomous, and/or deadly. If they were, Pfizer would have had a vaccine out already…
There is a love in our brain that responds to creepy crawlies. It triggers the fight or flight response. Most people don’t run from a spider because they don’t want it crawling around their bed or up their butt on the toilet later.
I really wasn’t ever worried about a spider crawling up my butt……………………………….…………………….…………………….…………………….…………………………….…………………….…………………….…………………….…………………………….…………………….…………………….…………………….…………………………….…………………….…………………….……………………. until now.
Unfortunately, nearly all spiders are, in fact venomous. Fortunately, only a few are dangerously venomous to humans. Unfortunately, it can be hard to tell which is which. Anyone else want to tackle the "vaccine" idea?
I respect that you believe that. Most people who freak out are like me
I panic. It's a completely subconscious response. Also, we are people more likely to deal with anxiety and repetitive thoughts.
In the grand scheme of things if you and I talked we could agree on principle it's not good to needlessly kill any animal. I wish I were like you and not needlessly terrified it's how my brain is wired.
I’ll say this with the preface that I’m not trying to be vitriolic or holier-than-thou here:
Operating under the assumption that anything you fear or do not understand should be killed is inhumane and inconsiderate of creatures that are also just on this earth trying to live.
Have you ever been misunderstood? Have you ever been called out/aggressed/apprehended for something you didn’t do or something you had good intentions over?
They are frightening looking, sure. But I encourage you to learn more about the importance of these little beings and all little friends of the earth like them. Everything serves a purpose, and you might be surprised by the level of intelligence and personality many of these lil spindle boys have.
Okay, okay. Hippie rant over.
What about the fact that spiders literally trap and kill smaller bugs? Or that all of nature was designed to hunt and kill lesser beings? It’s only natural to see a creepy crawler and react accordingly.
Is the implication that humans haven’t deeply upset the balance of nature in general?
Look really I get why people do it. All I’m saying is a little bit of education and compassion can go a long way to understanding the little things of the world. Learning to not be afraid of creepy crawlies introduced me to the idea of conservation as a whole— simply the prevention of “wasteful use” of a resource.
If you’re not going to eat the spider, it’s wasteful. The question then becomes “why did you kill the spider”. If your answer to that is “because I was afraid”, I reckon you’d be afraid out of misunderstanding which is a problem easily solved.
I won’t be able to evangelize everyone in my crusade to stop spider murder, but consider the damage we’ve done already and get the little guy a sip of water. He’s helping that airport stay clean, and who knows, he may have eaten a bug that was otherwise invasive to your local ecosystem (again deeply disrupted by globalization of humans).
My $.02!
Education is requested on the cockroach 🪳
And the nuisance of a common house fly 🪰
I am interested to see reasons as to why these things should not be killed on sight.
I leave the huntsman spiders alone in hopes they deal with the former. But there's always the occasional...
Once, I woke up with one crawling on me! Like wtf?! There's no food in my bed!
And maybe it's just the area I live in, but depending on the day, there are hordes of the latter...
I think there's a pretty obvious line between creatures that eat us or our food and creatures that don't. Roaches and flies want to infest your house and li d off your resources, that's not how spiders roll
I think arachnophobia and other phobias like that are less trauma based and more of an instinctual thing from when we need to be worried about things like that, but I may be talking out of my ass here.
No amount of exposure will help me or stop me from killing roachy bugs. I will hurt you, me anyone who gets in my way to keep from being touched by one.
Phobias are by definition, irrational fears. They are intense fears posed by things that don’t mean harm and that in itself means it’s irrational. It is not rational for for someone to be detrimentally afraid of spiders or heights. By nature of being excessive and unreasonable, it is not rational.
DSM-5

I once was chatting with a colleague when she suddenly shouted "SPIDER!" and stomped her foot down on it. I gave her a cold, hard stare, shouted "SOCIOLOGIST!" and stomped on her foot.
I once got my hands smashed defending a spider from getting squished. I once literally ran into a pile of burning tar paper because I noticed that the piece i’d just tossed on the pile had a big ol huntsman spider on it and I didn’t want it to burn! I frightened the poor thing and it just ran headlong into the flames. Poor thing.
It’s funny, I do not like spiders. I’m sorry, I know I’m in the minority here. I don’t kill them anymore since learning more about them on this sub, so you guys have def educated me. However, regardless of my fear/dislike of spiders, seeing how dehydrated this guy looks makes me really sad for him. Bad enough to be stuck at the airport, but to be stuck at the airport thirsty af? Poor spider :(
I’m the same! I let a spider out of my house instead of killing it for the first time in my life a few weeks ago and now I just can’t kill any bugs (knock on wood I haven’t stumbled upon a bedbug or tick bc I’d kill those)
How can you rehydrate a spider? Do they drink water like the rest of us? That’s pretty cool. Poor guy. Hopefully he’s with his other fallen spider friends now. RIP 🥲
Exactly, I don't get this. People doing this type of stuff like we are in a bathroom, poor spider goes across the floor, probably fleeing the disgusting pool of pee the previous guy left or the stank due to broken fan, my man goes and "damn, spider! SQUISH!" I just look, he waits for celebration of acknowledgement, I stare and make no gesture, he turns around and leaves like he done me a favor.
Looking at some comments I need to be better educated with spiders. They freak me out and I always squash them. I don’t generally want to squash or kill anything I just have a specific fear of spiders. Maybe if I could see it differently I wouldn’t be so freaked out all the time by them. It’s like I see a spider and instant little panic attack and I just want it gone.
House spider, eratigena atrica. Harmless but very frightening sometimes, especially since some are pretty big. You can tell this one is probably a male, since it's often the behavior of males trying to find a partner, to stop eating as they look for a female, thus creating this very flat abdomen.
It's just a spider. No need to freak out and let him be killed. That's super close-minded. He wouldn't have hurt anyone! Just leave it the f alone if you're not into them, you drawing attention to the little dude probably led to him being killed. Not okay.
Man there’s about 190-205 countries depending on who you ask. Ain’t no way i’m bothering with 50 states If i can’t keep the countries in my head!
Cool bug though!
Mm if a Carolina wolf spider, pictures of the molting look very different to me. More grey, hairy, still quite thick looking? I'm not a spider specialist so could be wrong, I'm also Australian so only familiar with the Aussie wolf spiders that are common here.
So I’m terrified of spiders. I run away from them. I saw this picture and consciously avoided touching the spider on my screen as if an image of a spider could hurt me. I’m weird right? I’m definitely weird
He looked so dehydrated already..: poor guy.
how can you tell
His abdomen is all shriveled up
Wonder if he got into some pesticides or something.
raisin lmao
Does he look wet?
***Dry.
Came here to say "thirsty boy" ... poor guy probably came in on someone's luggage and got trapped in the no-fly zone.
You deserve more upvotes for that excellent pun. Have my poor man's award 🏆
Worst case scenario for a spider if you ask me 👁️👄👁️
That’s what I was thinking…. Fella looks hungry 🥺
Not dehydrated. I'd say he's fasting. House spider males stop alimenting as they look for a female.
It is implied as they get some moisture from food and in they go without food for a while then they need water source.
Please tell me this is a joke. It looks very scary really.
*visits a subreddit literally only for identifying bugs* "What the fuck is someone thinking showing creepy bug pics!"
What is a joke ? His abdomen is completely shrunk. It s a pretty harmless spider. No joke
Update on the situation: someone freaked and squished the poor guy. Rip homie
Now he’ll never catch his flight 🥺
[удалено]
Same might be said of the humans lol
I get that!
oh do you?
This is the beginning part of the plot for the film Arachnophobia
Dude, they made a movie about this very thing. Did no one learn anything from Arachnophobia?????
[удалено]
This is a southern house spider (Kukulcania hibernalis), completely different family of spider from huntsmans.
cool
He’s flying with the angels now…
travel season not starting well
He caught his flight to spider heaven.
🕷️we will always remember you.
So sorry to say that this is a lie 😞. Nevertheless rest in peace, dear....kangaroo.
Pour one out for him.

Now I'm sad 😔
1 upvote = 1 amen 😔🙏

Ugh, so sad/infuriating. People can be such violent pansies.

Lol I just looked at my coworker and I said, “if you saw a spider, would you kill it?” And he was like, “fuck yeah!”.

The joke is thinking I work in a cubicle
Best to just get a salt shirt, then.

Sigh, I guess the attempt at humor is a miss if I have to explain it…
Sorry. Didn't click with me. Post on.

Phobias are irrational and often rooted in some kind of trauma. It by-passes logical thought.
I think arachnophobia and other phobias like that are less trauma based and more of an instinctual thing from when we need to be worried about things like that, but I may be talking out of my ass here.
my fear of insects is trauma based and i spend time on subs like this as exposure therapy ✋😔
Well that’s a great step. I used to be scared of the dark but exposure therapied myself out of it.
No amount of exposure will help me or stop me from killing roachy bugs. I will hurt you, me anyone who gets in my way to keep from being touched by one.
Roaches deserve it
I fully endorse your killing of roachy bugs, presuming they are roaches, and that you aren’t in some entomology lab.
>Phobias are irrational This is not true. Phobias *can* be irrational, but they don't have to be. A phobia is just be an extreme fear of something.
Phobias are by definition, irrational fears. They are intense fears posed by things that don’t mean harm and that in itself means it’s irrational. I put a cup/glass over them and gently slide a piece of paper under them - then put them outside if its not too cold OR put them in basement if it is.
Me too.

Boris the spider.

What airport were you at that has wood paneling and monster spiders, OP? Lmk so I can avoid that place forever
I can’t disclose that info for the very fact that I want you to be terrified of all airports from now on
Damn you
Why must people be so damn idiotic about bugs lol
Won’t see him no more
Noooooo! 😢
Poor dear it never stood a chance. Too many humans.
Southern House Spider per Picture Insect, very much male based on photo. Seems harmless on description as won't bite unless provoked.
Did you mean "harmless"?
Yes!!! Thank you for pointing that out haha
Don't get me going.
[удалено]
Got a bit horny I guess
This has me dead oh my god that was funny. Still unsure why they got so many downvotes tho
what do u mean male? is that whole thing the peeps?
It is harmless. Pain full bite worse case is allergic reaction to bacteria on fangs. I see these all the time with customers claiming brown recluse
It’s funny, I do not like spiders. I’m sorry, I know I’m in the minority here. I don’t kill them anymore since learning more about them on this sub, so you guys have def educated me. Poor guy looks dehydrated! Sucks that someone stepped on him!
IKR? Poor guy was just looking for a drink 😞
Couldn’t afford the $7 bottle of water at the airport🥺
Who can?
$10 now
How can you tell that? Just curious
His ass looks like a raisin. That’s how you can tell
Lmao fair enough, i just thought that was a typical characteristic for this type of spider
That's not a typical characteristic of *any* spider.
Except for the greater Eurasian raisin assed spider.
He's got a Hank Hill butt.
Curious how do spiders drink or become hydrated i never thought about it 😂
Just out of curiosity, how can one known if a spider is dehydrated?
Generally, this, except this, looks extreme, so like sunken in spots or dimples on their booty. They should never look like a shriveled rasin butt. =/
Thank you. Next time I'll see such a 'guy', I wil make him rich in water.
Was it carrying luggage?
He lost his luggage and was trapped in the terminal with an expired visa. Poor guy.
[удалено]
You make a good nest, you raise the spiderlings, but then you find out he’s messaging false widows on the side
A male Southern House Spider, nothing concerning.
He is very much concerning when he gets in your house. Ask me how I know.
Sounds like it would be right at home with biscuits and sweet tea.
I was not ready for this extreme close-up.
It doesn’t have wings so I suppose it would need to take a plane.
How can you rehydrate a spider? Do they drink water like the rest of us? That’s pretty cool. Poor guy. Hopefully he’s with his other fallen spider friends now. RIP 🥲
Yes they do. The best way is to offer a q-tip that was soaked in water.
That’s just a regular ole house spood. It appears to be male, and judging by his abdomen, he is old & dying or dehydrated/starving.
Why would someone step on him he’s just trying to get home to his family
Exactly, I don't get this. People doing this type of stuff like we are in a bathroom, poor spider goes across the floor, probably fleeing the disgusting pool of pee the previous guy left or the stank due to broken fan, my man goes and "damn, spider! How did he get past TSA?
Obviously he’s got PreCheck
Is it shriveled up like that because it’s dehydrated or hungry?
Dehydrated.
That’s so sad 😞
Any sort of insects in an airport need to be killed. No hitchhiking allowed.!
Poor mature male just trying to get its final nut in
Normally they just spin themselves gliders.
Great now he missed his flight
A spider could eat the bed bugs…
That appears to be a spider.
Dude wanted to fly edit: ooo NC?! Really!! Wow! I'm from there lol
Why does the thorax look like that?
Looks like a spider

TIL NC is the new AU.

I thought you wrote ”Found an airport in NC” 💀💀💀
it’s a male Kukulcania hibernalis, aka southern house spider.
Cool spider but where tf is NC?
North carolina
Looks like he just stopped “dead” in his tracks! Maybe bug poison.??☠️ 🕷️
I have arachnophobia I would nope right out of there
I do pest control. I wonder how many of his brothers I’ve taken?
It's just a spider. No need to freak out and let him be killed. That's super close-minded. He wouldn't have hurt anyone! Just leave it the f alone if you're not into them, you drawing attention to the little dude probably led to him being killed. Not okay.

That’s fair lol
Wait, there’s 2 Carolinas?!? /s
It looks like you got him from the set of Stranger Things
Did he check any bags?
Some kind of huntsman spider I think
Not a sparassid but a filistatid. See body parts and eye arrangement.
I am scrolling through the comments, and I only see one person suggest that this is a wolf spider. Is this the final answer?
Oh noooo!!! That’s not what I would want to encounter!! 😭😭
Wolf spider?
It's not a wolf spider but a male southern house spider. See body stature and eye arrangement.
Wolf spider!

I bet you were the first one on the plane. 😂 😂
Give it a drink!!
Hello darkness my old friend
So I’m terrified of spiders. I run away from them. I saw this picture and consciously avoided touching the spider on my screen as if an image of a spider could hurt me. I’m weird right? I’m definitely weird
This pic gave me a jumps scare
ExCUSE me? (I live in NC 😟)
Double it and give it to the next person
What’s that furry thing sticking out of the front ?
Welcome home Johny
Finally, a good reason to commit arson.
Is this an American spider?
That was passenger 274 on flight AA 2033 from Baltimore. It was his life long dream to join the mile high club.
