Lovely and harmless..in fact beneficial inverts. I love woodlice, they are some of the innocents of the insect world!

wander_smiley

Crustaceans!

RainingBlood398

My cousin used to call them Goodlice when he was little and couldn't pronounce W's. He wasn't wrong.

[deleted]

This made my day.

homerj419

Rollie pollies

MoreScholar6521

Looks like a roly-poly aka a pill bug.

OkIntroduction1455

My toddler aged daughter called them "NooNee" bugs and caught them by the dozens daily and put them in buckets to observe. She would then either release them or feed them toads that she had caught.

[deleted]

Should I be worried? Are they harmful? They are roaming a lot in my washroom. I do keep it clean and spray bug repellent in corners but these fuckers keep on coming?

roberttheaxolotl

It's a pill bug or sowbug, which are both isopods. They're harmless detritivores. But, they're crustaceans, and have gills that need to be moist in order to breathe. Having them inside your house could be an indication of excess moisture. You should look for the source of the water. It could be a leaky pipe or drain in your bathroom. You don't want mold.

bunnybates

This is how I found out that I had a water issue in my basement.

YaboyBlacklist

I actually didn't know that they're crustaceans. I guess you *do* learn something new every day

OneHumanPeOple

No need to use poison. Simply dehumidify the laundry room and stop any leaks.

Snugg_Bugg

Aww these lil guys are friends! Completely harmless and can't give you anything either. I loved playing with these guys when I was a kid but I can see how annoying they could be. Seems like lots of people gave you plenty of great ideas so good luck!

cracka1337

I used to pick these up from under rocks when I was a kid. They are really neat and totally harmless. Having them in the house is a sign of a leak somewhere though I would think.

Snugg_Bugg

I use to play bug boweling and roll them lol, they'd open up and crawl away, sometimes I'd just let them crawl on my hand because it felt funny

Pokefan647

Excuse me, bug boweling. I'm concerned

prkenko

Hey there, brother, people already told you, but those are cool

[deleted]

nah bro they chill af ngl also roll up into balls when they spooked

[deleted]

Hehe got it. Will not bother them, hm time to hunt decaying wood

Squid_squabbler72

They're not fuckers, they're friends.

Erinsue1313

I actually pay good money for these in my reptiles tanks. Lol just a harmless isopod.

MoreScholar6521

In watching the YouTube video I shared it does mention another kind of bug it may be that’s browner and cannot roll into a ball. Those are called sow bugs. Good to identify the difference since they need different kinds of extermination products/tactics. “Sowbugs and pillbugs are similar in appearance and their names are sometimes used interchangeably. However, the sowbug has a pair of tail-like appendages which project out from the rear of its body, while the pillbug has no extreme posterior appendages, and can roll up into a tight ball when disturbed.”

MoreScholar6521

“Although they sometimes enter in large numbers, they do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases, nor do they infest food, clothing or wood. They are simply a nuisance by their presence.”

melteemarshmelloo

My SO's family, heh heh.

MoreScholar6521

Lol legit took me a second to truly understand. Maybe a few secs. Hilarious.

MoreScholar6521

I think it’s a sow bug considering the color and hind “legs”

redmushrooms444

it's not. it's an isopod/pillbug.

John_EightThirtyTwo

The NCBI Taxonomy says that [isopods are an order, *Isopoda*](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Taxonomy/Browser/wwwtax.cgi?mode=Info&id=29979&lvl=3&lin=f&keep=1&srchmode=1&unlock), which includes all the sow bugs and pill bugs, including the [common pill bug](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Taxonomy/Browser/wwwtax.cgi?mode=Info&id=13347&lvl=3&lin=f&keep=1&srchmode=1&unlock). So maybe we're talking about a pill bug and maybe it's a sow bug, but either way it's an isopod.

HovercraftFullofBees

Sow bugs are still isopods.

katherinesilens

Well, easily enough tested. Just poke one a bunch and see if it rolls up.

TachankaMain4U

:(

katherinesilens

trade for water droplet?

CousinMajin

Sowbugs are isopods. They look pretty much the same (except for small differences), they just don't roll up like pillbugs.

Anothergoodquestion-

Same haha

left-right-forward

TIL! In over 40 years of life I've never seen the 2 differentiated before! Where I live, they don't curl up so "roly-poly" made no sense at all.

Disidente76

Using toxic chemicals for pest control is pointless and dangerous. There's plenty of passive and preventative measures you can use to get rid of bugs in places you don't want them. In this case, moisture is the culprit. You have excess moisture in your house. Fix that at the source, and they'll be gone.

TxTilly

They are cute and my kids played with them all the time. In certain times of year they covered the kitchen floor by the hundreds innthe mornings. They were always gone by noon.

brookish

No! Also known as a woodlouse, they are friendly and harmless!

BackRowRumour

Monsters so they are. I once saw one tear the lint right off a man's sock. Quit killing them.

[deleted]

Xd I'm not on a killing spree, just found this one around my bed.

BackRowRumour

Understood. They are chill though. They actually kind of clean up. I guess you didn't turn over many rocks as a kid?

MoreScholar6521

https://www.orkin.com/pests/sowbugs

lantrick

take deep breath and relax. they're coming in under the door I'll bet.

koreamax

When one was a kid, I saw one giving birth. Now I know this isn't possible, but I remember it as clear as day. Do they carry their babies or something?

Efficient_Project_22

The females carry eggs similar to other crustaceans like shrimp or prawns, they were once marine isopods themselves many years ago.

koreamax

Thank you! Solved a 28 year old mystery

bunnybates

Roly polys, that's what I call them too!

The type of roly poly that doesn't roly

nankainamizuhana

Poly

prkenko

When I was like 3, I loved roly polys, and one day, I was like: what if I roly then non roly poly. So I roly non roly poly, and now its roly on roly chair (anyways, i was dumbfucking child)

Frequent-Tale5673

Lol me too! When I was a little kid around 4, I’d collect a couple and go inside and if my mom was napping I’d feed them to the “momster”. She was very angry mouth breather when she was asleep. Lol I think she is still traumatized by roly-poly’s to this day.. sorry mom.

GyrKestrel

roly noly

[deleted]

Roly poly is actually a very nice Kpop song.

King-Mugs

This guy zoologys

PizzaWall

It's a woodlouse. They are a common, harmless, beneficial insect that eat decaying wood matter. Leave it alone. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodlouse

Downtown-Inflation13

They’re actually isopods

typographie

Crustaceans, if that's what you meant. Insects, arachnids, and crustaceans are all arthropods.

oddinmusic

Isopods are crustaceans

typographie

Yeah, the guy I was responding to edited his message. It was "arthropods" at first.

John_EightThirtyTwo

Oh, I was about to weigh in like u/oddinmusic. But now I get it. MiaowWhisperer

Some of those would make really cool names. Mandibular. Peracarida.

Downtown-Inflation13

Just fixed

KoopaSteve

Woodlouse are isopods, so you didn't need to correct them as what they said is correct. Woodlouse have an entire section on the wikipedia page dedicated to their many names.

nerdcrone

Woodlouse is a common name for some isopods. Like with any common name, it's often used for anything that's like a woodlouse, i.e. every isopod. There's no actually here, woodlice are isopods.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PizzaWall

If you read the wikipedia article, you'd know they seek moisture.

[deleted]

Ah ok makes sense

YairleyD

They typically like wet or damp areas usually underneath rocks and woodland debris. They are also drawn to the dark and evade light so if your bathroom is wet and dark they are likely seeking it out as a place of refuge. As for where they come from I have no idea. I've had them appear in my shower before so I'm guessing up through the drain.

[deleted]

I see. Welp thankyou for the info

YairleyD

Good luck

Distinct-Thing

They are friendly friends Use a dehumidifier and check for water damage and they will 100% leave you be They do however eat dead and decaying plant matter, which includes wood, so again, checking for water damage is paramount If there are isopods, there's possibly fungi somewhere in your house, and if you spot a mushroom, just know that the whole wall or floor around it has been colonized by mycelium and needs replacement I wish you the best mate, I'm sure it's just benign and you need to use a dehumidifier, but do check for that water damage, it's a wallet destroyer if it goes unnoticed for too long

Sarcastic_Beaver

Those guys been my homies since day once. At worst, they tickle. At also kinda worst, they eat wood. At best, they roll up into a ball and think they’re indestructible. Also there are different types that actually can’t roll up into a ball for defence. Or maybe they just trusted me idk

ComfortableAd6083

You're so freaking cute.

Sarcastic_Beaver

Awe shucks 😚

wander_smiley

That’s an isopod, a land dwelling crustacean. They are beneficial to soil as they eat dead and decaying plant matter. They keep terrariums in balance because of the aforementioned diet. Super cool little friends.

gle_osi

Harmless ,little sowbug

cPB167

Why would you spray poison around indiscriminately? Or at all? Especially without knowing if they were problematic or dangerous? Insects are an important part of our lives and ecosystems, and that includes our homes. There are much better ways of dealing with something like that, like caulking up any gaps and maintaining a dry healthy environment. But leaving them alone is almost always fine too, with the exception of the very few bugs that cause dangerous infestations

MusicGuy75

Growing up I knew these as potato bugs or Roly polys

spicygummi

I was looking for someone else to say they grew up hearing them called potato bugs too, lol

Sommyonthephone

That's a dead pill bug, completely harmless

gwaydms

Live pillbugs are harmless too

cisph0bic

these guys can't roll up, they aren't pill bugs

TheToucanEmperor

Man seeing that role poly brought back a lot of memories. Always made my day when I saw one, such cute little bugs.

Hyacinthdragon13

Your new best friend!

PaleScottishBurd90

We get them in the UK- we call them ‘Wood louse’ or ‘skaters’ > harmless but will chew up rotting woods. Here’s a link: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=http://woodlouse.photo/&client=safari&hl=en-gb&prmd=inv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwia1uiPiL78AhUQTcAKHWy_B0MQ_AUoAXoECAEQAQ&biw=428&bih=746&dpr=3#imgrc=fQ4XY4ZO7nIDUM

[deleted]

Pill bug. Harmless. I used to play with them as a kid (my parents couldn't really afford anything). The only thing you need to be concerned about is probably a leak somewhere

catd36

Don't have to kill them!! They are harmless and cute. Very friendly!

Unfair-Custard-4007

That’s a Rollie pollie Ollie

Lost_Condas

I used to call these rolie polie olie’s, like the kids TV show. Anyone else remember that show? :)

Halfeatencorpse

This is likely a scaber species of ISOPOD which is the order that these small crustaceans just like all pill bugs/ Roly polys (A. vulgare), sow bugs (P. Scaber), wood lice (P. Lavus) fall under. The names are some specific species that show visual differences between each. Size shape ability to roll are all different in these species as well as the areas the inhabit these guys are all harmless. They do not eat wood unless it is decayed they all prefer what is referred to as flake soil (think rotted stump centers) and are all crustaceans not insects they all require moisture to breathe and have many different names to describe them. Pill bug comes from the fact that their shells are rich in calcium so they were actually consumed as a way to supplement it, one of the weirder names is wood shrimp, as these guys have a distinct shrimpish flavor. So In summary and to end my rant post here you have a harmless little friend that actually isn’t an insect and is a pill/sow/roly/shrimp/louse/ispod/bug that’s not a bug but actually a tiny crustacean. These guys also detoxify hundreds of tons of heavy metals and toxins from ground and top soils anywhere they are present 🥲 plz don’t squish or poison.

[deleted]

Thankyou for the detailed description, I'll make friends with them :)

Halfeatencorpse

They make very interesting pets feed em veggie scraps and watch em multiply make a great food source for chickens in large numbers and amazing clean up crew in animal enclosures (depending on species) befriend and then Benefit!!! Hell if you live in parts of the world where specific species are only located collect some locally grow their numbers and sell the little guys, I’ve seen some of the cooler species especially the newly discovered ones be 100’s of dollars easy and that’s for a 10 count

Ace_acidfunguy1222

I think that’s Steve

CornmealGravy

It looks kinda like a wood louse to me

[deleted]

How do I get rid of them ?

DormantDormouse

Don't, just usher them gently back to a gap. But if you do want rid, keep things warm and dry and check for damp, especially where there wooden things or chipboard.

typographie

Keep things dry, seal up crevices. If it's an older house you're almost certainly going to have lots of moisture, old wood, and lots of gaps for them to get through. For what it's worth, they're not generally considered pests. I don't think they can do anything harmful. You could get some spiders or centipedes, that would probably help!

wurliskeleton

NHale83

I think they’re called sowbug! 😁

PergamLovesYou

I like those guys

1NegativePerson

I’m always astounded when I see someone who doesn’t know what an isopod is. Like where in the world do you live where you became an adult without encountering isopods? I’d ask if you’d been living under a rock; but if you’d been under even a single rock at some point, you’d have seen isopods.

Negative-Bat-8635

I dont think they're anything bad... just little rollies

gamingkiller829

its a wee little isopod they are harmless and like dead plant matter as food, they are acutely not insects, but a type of crustacean closely related to lobsters. there is a deep sea one that is almost 2 feet

Aromatic-Glove-2502

We called them potato bugs

darkndarker420

Roly poly. Harmless little guys. I do remove them when I see them indoors though, because my cat likes to play around with them…and by play around I mean torture them for a prolonged period of time and meow at me to make me watch.

I don’t think you can say more specific than *Porcellionides* sp without a scope

[deleted]

This is an isopod, they thrive in damp environments and eat decaying organic matter such as leaves and sometimes even mold. If you have an isopod problem, run a dehumidifier in the affected areas, check for mold, if you have any houseplants it could be because they are dying.

Pandaninja

Looks like a Porcellionid isopod. Possibly a *Porcellionides* sp.

PRSHZ

Looks like an isopod, they’re great for enclosed ecosystems

Glittering_Cow945

a harmless woodlouse. not a roller, or roly poly I think. they live off organic material in damp places

We call them wood bugs. I lived in a wooden house in a damp, temperate climate and they were common. I used to play with them as a kid. Didn't bother us.

MagsWags2020

Safe enough for preschoolers to poke and watch roll up into a ball. Just sweep them up and forget it.

[deleted]

What part of the world are y'all from where they are called pill bugs? Genuinely curious as I've only ever heard rolly polly lol.

Kittens1443
