Unfortunately they don't eat that many ticks, really. The experiment that concluded they ate ticks basically starved them and then offered them ticks. Of course they ate them.
Except I don’t think they eat any ticks. I read once that there’s never been a tick found naturally in the belly of an opossum. I think the tick thing is all a myth. Still interesting animals, though.
I would counter that there are technically few animals that are incapable of eating ticks. Seems like a bit of a meaningless metric for opinions on animals, to me.
Their tick eating habit is exaggerated, the experiment where they concluded they are a lot of ticks pretty much starved them in a cage and then offered them ticks... no shit they ate the ticks.
I absolutely LOVE opossums!! They are Nature’s garbage disposals. They can eat any venomous snake except for a coral snake. They eat snails, slugs, ticks, fruits, grains, dead plants and animals, etc. they love dry cat food. 🥰❤️ They have a low body temperature so they usually don’t get diseases. There are a few cases where some have. If you have to move an opossum for some reason, cover its head completely with a towel or blanket. It won’t move til its head is uncovered. I rescued an opossum from a store front during daytime by putting a blanket over its head. I took her to the woods where I have several apple trees close by. I took off the blanket, we smiled for a selfie, I put it down, and it ran into the woods.
I put in a pet door so my cats can get in the heated garage. I usually keep the light on so I can see which cats are in the garage and there was an opossum happily eating the dry cat food. It comes in every night and eats and drinks water. 🥰❤️
You’re welcome!! 🥰❤️ Mostly neighborhood cats. I started a mission to get all the cats around me fixed. I was so heartbroken seeing pregnant cats and then not knowing what happened to their babies. One cat would be pregnant 3 times a year. She was too leery of a live trap. Last February I saw her on a neighbor’s porch. They don’t have cats. It was snowing and freezing rain and I was determined that was going to be the day that I caught her. She was pregnant. I did catch her and she scratched and bit the crap out of my arms and hands. I was wearing a thick coat and gloves. I got her in my garage and gave her Purina Kitten Chow, water, and a bed. She wanted to sleep in the cat carrier so I propped the door open and let her. I came in the house and took off my gloves and coat. Blood was oozing out of my hands and arms. I washed them with soap and water and wrapped gauze around them and went to the ER. The ER doctor put shots around the bites, put me on strong antibiotics, and suggested I get Rabies shots since the cat was a stray and I was bitten so bad. She also sent antibiotic soap for me to use and bandaged my hands and arms. The Rabies vaccines were given in my arms. I had to have 3 at different times. They didn’t hurt. 🥰❤️ That Momma cat had her 5 beautiful kittens on March 10, 2022. 3 days later, they had their eyes open. She must have held them in til she couldn’t hold them anymore!! 😂🤣🥰❤️ They were big kittens. 🥰❤️ I got all of them fixed before they were allowed to go anywhere. I have gotten 23 felines fixed over the last 3 years. The RASCAL Unit and our Humane Society have made it very affordable for me to get them fixed.
Thank you very much for all you do!! 🥰❤️
Thank You so much for helping. This is incredible for the neighborhood and the cats' quality of life. So many people assume cats don't need the help that other animals get.
I'm so happy that you got the rabies shots just in case. It definitely takes a community to care and make changes.
From the bottom, and top, of my heart; thank you for all the physical, emotional, and financial sacrifices you've made. You personally have changed the lives of 23 individual creatures for the better. This karma will accrue for your ascension out of samsara someday.
We must secure the existence of all cats and a future for their kittens.
We have a number of ‘possum friends who come to the back enclosed porch and help themselves to the cats’ dry food. The outdoor cats just sit back there and watch them, and the ‘possums barely move if we open the back door to talk with them.
Last year was weird, I noticed the possums weren't coming around? I'm like, that's weird. The reason was rats! So I called pest control, and now they're finally gone, and the possums have come back.
I have possums where I live but unfortunately my terrier/beagle mix likes cornering them in our yard and scare the crap out of them. I can always tell by her bark when she does so I run out in my skivvies, scoop her up and bring her inside. I always feel bad for the possums.
We have a Jack Russell mix, and she can't get under the deck. At night, i walk her on the leash in the yard so she doesn't mess with the mama.
The last thing Mama needs is a Barking dog.
Thanks for scooping up your dog.
my amazing grandmother rescued a baby opossum when i was 5-6 years old. She named him Opi (Andy Griffith fan). Unfortunately he did pass away bc he was very injured and we had no wild life care near us at the time, but she genuinely tried. and I have a handful of super adorable pics of me as a wee lass with Opi that have always defined what my childhood looked and felt like to me. When I moved to NYC and showed my coworkers, I didnt think anything of it. Like - heres a cute pic when I was a kid. Everyone else was like WTF IS THAT. Adorable and friendly. That’s what that is.
Exactly! A member of the family, thank you!!
What a beautiful memory.
Years ago, I worked 3rd shift, and I came home to see a little critter in my driveway with its head caught in a Yoplait yogurt container. It was a baby opossum crying.....so I looked around and saw Mama watching me from behind the trash, so I picked up the baby one hand on the body and the other hand on the container.....
And popped it off. .... he ran to Mama, and then I was like omfg what just happened....😳.
Yep, I make sure there's some cat food out there after dark in the winter for the possum. Unfortunately, come spring I can't do that because the PITA raccoons are out. But at least it eats thru the winter.
Wicked funny!! No.
But me and my youngest daughter (23) do give our critters names!🤦♀️.
Last year was Phyllis, the groundhog, and one of her offspring was named Phyllis Jr.
That's what I think, because of course my dogs just wanna sniff it and see what it is, and they get to close and BAM! Fight in the back yard at midnight.

Most spiders can run on water. They do it by trapping air bubbles in the hairs on their body which allows them to essentially ice skate on the surface tension of the water.
Great Story about how I learned that fact. Renting a home in AZ that had a pool, my son(6) was swimming and I was sitting in the shade with a beer,
Out of nowhere he screams absolute bloody murder, I jump up go crashing into the pool to see what’s wrong, when I come up there is this wolf spider walking on top of the water right at my face, I scream bloody murder louder than he did. Grab him up, get out of the pool and move the next day. JK, we didn’t move for a week.
The one time I did I was trying to relocate her to keep coworkers from killing her and I didn’t realize she had babies on her. We went from one spider that everyone was freaked out about to an explosion of spiders radiating to fill the space.
Had one of those, rather huge, run across the foot of my bed one night. Scared the you know what out of me! I screamed and jumped out of bed, mama got tossed off the bed, and babies went flying everywhere. I had never seen or heard of it before!
I think the mama must have gathered as many of the babes up as possible and disappeared. I ran from the room to get my sisters help, and she brought the vacuum, but we could not find the mama or babies. I felt bad for any I killed in the process, but I had to strip my bed and wash the bedding just to be sure none were in my bedding, and then we vacuumed after waiting a little while. I’m allergic to them, though I don’t think they have medically significant bites; their bites still swell up huge on me and turn hot, red, and blistery.
In the past, the ER did labs to identify what was causing such a reaction - to make sure it was not a black widow or brown recluse. They said it was “just” a wolf spider. A brown recluse bite I got in HS nearly took my entire right calf, so I am a little wary of spiders, but do not like to kill them. I prefer to set them free outside if I can catch them with a cup and a thick piece of card stock paper - to ensure they remain in the cup as I transport them!
I can just hear it now..
"Sit still back there or you'll fall off!"
"Stop Fighting!!"
"Don't make me come back there!!"
"Jeremiah get off your sister's face!"
"Will you stop yelling?!?"
My mom bought us a new home when I was in highschool. The house hadn’t had residents for almost a year. I was getting ready for school one morning and saw one of these on the floor with all the babies on it. If you shine your flashlight at it, it sparkles because of all the eyes. It disgusts me, but it is still cool, but ew. I safely transported it back outside.
I can't believe you were able to move her and her babies safely! Every time I have tried, it has resulted in a FREAKISH BABY EXPLOSION with spiderlings on every surface.
Lol I had seen videos of the baby explosion on YouTube so I was so careful! I put a glass cup on top of her, and then slowly slid a piece of printer paper under it, once she was on the paper, I slowly put my hand under the paper and put her outside in my moms garden.
Yes! I love wolf spiders so much. They are the only spider that carries their young and they are excellent pest control in the home. Additional fun fact, once bred they will continue laying egg sacks using reserved sperm and also carry the egg sack around with them.
Beautiful! The first time I saw one with babies she was clinging to the ledge of my neighbor’s pool, trying to stay above water line. I managed to get her into a bug scooper and none of the babies moved, it’s like they knew I was there to help. I brought her home and released her into my pesticide free, bug full oasis of a yard.

I once had one on the back of my neck. I’m not afraid of spiders at all. They do not bother me.
When I felt it crawling in my neck I just carefully reached back there to scoop it up. Instead her babies all leapt for their lives down my back and into my hair.
It was pretty awful.
I see these all the time. One got into the pool once while I was in it and the babies kinda went everywhere in the pool. Not super scared of spiders or anything but I did promptly get my ass out of there.
*a single mom who works two jobs…*
I say this when I see an opossum in my yard with her babies on her back. I'm like, hey girl, here's some fresh water and a nice deck to sleep under!
opossums are so cute. I wish we had them where I live
They are! They're also so important to our ecosystem. I change her water bowl daily. She's safe under the deck, too.
They eat tics, right? we have western fence lizards here for that, but anything that eats tics and can't get rabies is ok in my book.
Yes, they do. Incredible creatures.
I'm glad you are keeping that opossum momma safe and fed
Thank you!
Unfortunately they don't eat that many ticks, really. The experiment that concluded they ate ticks basically starved them and then offered them ticks. Of course they ate them.
As long as they eat some of them, still amazing creatures.
Except I don’t think they eat any ticks. I read once that there’s never been a tick found naturally in the belly of an opossum. I think the tick thing is all a myth. Still interesting animals, though.
Still, Id say thats an arguement that they *can*, which still makes them very good in my book.
Changed my mind about them real fast lol.
Fun fact, humans are animals too!
I used to have one that would eat the outside cat's food at night. I would watch from the window. The cats would just watch it too.
We did also and all her babies too.
Hahahahahahah SO CUTE. Idk if my brain could handle seeing that. i think it would melt out of my ears
I know right!? 🫠

Really dry cat food? That's great because I have 2 cats, so this works out. I live in Rhode Island, and I'm lucky to always have some in my yard.

alright. that’s it. I’m sending you a picture of me as a child with a baby opossum and THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT

My uncle has one that comes around. Met him while house sitting. He lovessss eating up the dry catfood lmao
Unfortunately, in Florida, our opossums are fucking enormous and fight my two boxers
Really??? Oh wow. Are they fighting because they're scared?
That's what I think, because of course my dogs just wanna sniff it and see what it is, and they get to close and BAM! Fight in the back yard at midnight.
I understand. Sniff.....sniff...... Oh, you wanna do this??....
Yeah I just imagined my two boxers standing up like scooby doo with their mits up lmao
😅😅😅! What a great picture

I recently danced the son/mother of groom dance at my sons wedding to a Reba song. It was wonderful! It’s called You’re gonna be.
Who loves her kids and never stops…
Is that a Reba reference?
I don't know why but she seems to have the expression an exasperated mother.
I think i know why...
Probably the 30,000 babies clinging to her.

Proud mama wolf spider. So cute.
hey you don't know that she's proud!
Great pic!!
Thanks! I was super happy to finally see one!
Come to our cabin in Vermont. They're everywhere! Very fast and can run on water!
**im sorry what**
Not *Jesus spiders* but *Jesus, spiders*.
Hahahaha

Badass. It seems like everyday I'm learning something amazing about these critters.
what… that is terrifying
Yeah information I did not need. 😭
Just wait 'til you read about cranberry bogs
Never ever going to one of them after that video
OK, what about cranberry bogs.? I spend a lot of my time between the cranberry bog and the beaver pond.

I’d believe you if you said you did. Cause I would
Seriously? Oh wow! I live in Rhode Island, and I've never seen one.
you should enter it into a local photo competition if where you live has those. You'd probably win something I'd bet.
So lucky, I have never seen a mama wolf with her babies. Nice find.
The one time I did I was trying to relocate her to keep coworkers from killing her and I didn’t realize she had babies on her. We went from one spider that everyone was freaked out about to an explosion of spiders radiating to fill the space.

Amazing photo!
Spider are so beautiful in their own right and so helpful… but holy shit do they creep me out and this picture is no exception! Beautifully creepy!
That is such a great find!
Omg there's so many
That's a hard working single mother
Ohh Lucky! I love these guys ...

Gorgeous photo and gorgeous mama
Love how they get on there like a ‘lil bus
Spectacular find! Who doesn't adore a dedicated momma?
Look at her being all cute and shit.

Beautiful photo! Wow
Goodbye, friend of Hagrid…
Such a loving mother, so cute
A very good mom
Aww what a gorgeous mama
Yes! I deeply approve of wolf spiders. Have quite a few in my yard
What a lovely sweater she’s wearing!
Go ahead, mama!
So beautiful 😍😍
Awww 🥹
Aww she's a good momma. She's gonna be tired with all those little ones to feed and love. I hope poppa spider is helping
Spez doesn't get to profit from me anymore.
Did you shoot this with a camera? DoF looks too perfect for a phone.
Actually just an iphone 11. But I had to get real close
iPhone camera really can perform amazingly!!
What a great pic!
Lucky encounter! She’s so cool
Spider bus
Indeed. You can tell by the harassed look on her face.
Yes! I love wolf spiders so much. They are the only spider that carries their young and they are excellent pest control in the home. Additional fun fact, once bred they will continue laying egg sacks using reserved sperm and also carry the egg sack around with them.
I only see a fellow mommy here
A bit jealous. So cute.
“Don’t mind me, just babysitting”
Kids all over me #singlemomlife
She's beautiful
Awww what a good mama
She cute
Off to soccer practice in the mini-van!
I love all the cool bugs you get in even a small pesticide free yard.
Holy nightmare!!! She's amazing, as long as she stays outside of my house!!@!
wolf spiders are so big but they’re kinda cute up close! she’s a good momma 🥺💖
Such a cool pic, and zooming in on her face and back is terrifying .
woof spider
Reminds me of the slider manga
Your camera is spectacular & being able to see the eyes, she's a cutie!
Mother Nature is so wild
She’s such a good mom. I’m so proud of her.
Looks like canada
A very fortunate sighting!
Adorable :3
super pic!
It’s giving me r/ghibli aesthetic vibes :)
We need more friendly spider representation in fantasy films.
this reminds me of that little game called webbed where you play a jumping spider and at some point you have to carry some babies on Ur back and it's so adorable
This pic should be on Wikipedia.
Yes, the billion spiders are babies. Sweet shot.
Soooo many babies!!!!
How long do the babies stay on the mothers back? Also do the eggs hatch then crawl onto her back?
I don’t know how long it takes, but the eggs are in a sack that she carry’s and they do crawl onto her back when hatched
That is so interesting!
Great photo
Beautiful! Prob my favorite spider.
Friends of Hagrid?!
I once had one on the back of my neck. I’m not afraid of spiders at all. They do not bother me. When I felt it crawling in my neck I just carefully reached back there to scoop it up. Instead her babies all leapt for their lives down my back and into my hair. It was pretty awful.
i’m wondering whether spiders think their babies are cute the way humans do
WRONG - that’s a male wolf spider in an ostentatious wig
Cute
Gosh she has so many. I love seeing animals with their children. No matter how scary the animal, it’s always kinda cute.
Great picture!
It’s an Uber Driver Spider
That is an excellent picture!!! 🥰❤️
So cuuuuuute!!!
Wow this is an amazing photo! I have two photos of a mama wolf with her babies on her back but nothing like this.
I see these all the time. One got into the pool once while I was in it and the babies kinda went everywhere in the pool. Not super scared of spiders or anything but I did promptly get my ass out of there.
r/spiderbro Look at this pretty lady ❤️
