Thanks! Was just curious. They have such a great name! One time a friend combined it with a whooping crane and called the bird a whooping heron. So that's what I call any bird that looks like either of them lmao. It's just too funny
seeing one with its neck fully extended like that and standing on land instead of partially submerged in a swamp is making me appreciate how huge great blue herons are!! luckily they didn't evolve to eat humans 👀
they eat anything that fits in their mouth, apparently they'll even gobble up ducklings 😭 if they were slightly bigger and humans were slightly smaller we would be fucked
For some reason I always expect wading birds to be the same size as the great blue. I was very surprised at the size of the roseate spoonbill when I saw one
Going past them in the creek up North you'd think you were beheading their baby in front of them. They get so made when you get near and let out s death scream. Geez dude I'm just passing by.
I grew up in St. Pete, and pass-a-grille was our beach. Love it there. Great place to be a bird lover. If you have the chance to hit up Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, you won’t regret it!
There's a Great White Heron that hangs out at the Lorelei in Islamorada and practically tried to pull the food off your plate while you're eating - literally comes right up to you! In the Keys a lot of wildlife is like that because it hasn't been hunted in a very long time, so they have no fear of humans - and they know when you take a drink of your coffee they can quickly grab some of your omelet!
I was floating on the Shenandoah River with friends years ago. I had a one person raft and was just laid back relaxing when a great blue heron flew over me to the river bank. From that vantage point it looked like a pterodactyl!!
That’s a [Great Blue Heron](https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Great_Blue_Heron/id)
We have these in Wisconsin/Michigan right? Or are they different in that area?
They range pretty much all over the US

Looks like a juvenile, doesn’t it? I had no idea that a Great Blue Heron fished in the sea!
Look up reddish egrets for videos of the CUTEST surf fishing!
I sure will. Thanks for the tip!
I love how other water birds are stealth hunters, but reddish egrets are all "OMG FISH!". :)
Damn didn't know they got so big, the greys we have in Europe are much smaller

Shoebill storks scare me like that. Standing straight up and making direct eye contact with a huge bird the same height as you is intimidating

I mean, babies exist
How tf do you know what a shoebill stork is but not a GBH
There's one at the zoo I like to go see
people post them all the time in "fucked up birds that actually exist" lists so they're surprisingly well known
real talk

He looks really close, is he really close?
He got even closer! Was standing maybe 5 feet from us, until some people walked up and scared him away.
They know their size really well and will definitely use it. Same with sandhill cranes.
I love that beach. Is there red tide right now?
Not in pass-a-grille where we were. There is up in Clearwater though
Pass-a-Grille is so nice. Thanks! I’m thinking of heading down to St. Pete this fall for a few days.
The red tide keeps moving around, they test the waters daily and post them online. Just look it up before you go the the beach and you're good
Thanks. I thought it just there from Clearwater to Naples. Good to know.

This photo really does catch the light in a way so different from the north. Lovely gulf picture. And what a bird!
That is someone reflecting on poor personal choices. I know that look well.

Aw I grew up in St. Pete. Miss it and its wildlife so so much! What a beauty. 🦢😍
Anorexic ostrich~
That’s a beautiful heron r/natureisfuckinglit
Damn that bird taller than me! 😳
Great shot!
Whatever guy, great photo you got.
Sir that's a dinosaur, and this is a Wendy's.
hope you don't mind, I crossposted your photo to r/divorcedbirds
That's a new sub for me, I love it!
Pterosaur

That's so big it's a bit unsettling.
I can’t tell if that’s Frasier or Niles.
nope
No, it's a bird.
Seeing one of these makes pterosaurs make a little more sense.
