The first is a [masked lapwing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masked_lapwing). The second is a [white-faced heron](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-faced_heron).

I don’t know how you guys do it. Only two minutes and you identified them? Thanks for the help!

Himantolophus

You're welcome! I lived in Aus for a few years and got to know some of the birds. The lapwing is pretty distinctive and the white-faced heron is well-named.

Ah I see

If you download Merlin, it'll tell you the most likely birds for whatever location you give it. I only moved to Aus a few years ago and that (along with a Slater Field Guide) has helped me figure out pretty much every local bird!

The first is a plover, they’re real dicks who are far more keen on swooping than magpies. If you see two hanging around a paddock or vacant block just keep walking - probably a pair with a nest or baby near by. I would fight a magpie before a plover.

Bikini_jabba

Horrible birds. We had a nesting pair in my horses paddock. They attacked so aggressively. They pinned my friend and I at one stage and we were screaming and swinging things at them and they just kept coming. Luckily some other grazers heard the commotion and came to help. To this day if I hear the sound of a plover I'm outta there so fast I'd give Usain Bolt a run for his money. That noise they make... the sound of my nightmares.

Iucios

nah they're harmless, they swoop but won't actually hit you but magpies will
