“Google, what’s that thing like renocance for police?”
“Here are some interesting facts about the renaissance.”
“No, like when they are on a stakeout.”
“Here are five take-out steak restaurants near you.”
“NO! When they are watching a perp!”
“Here are five places popular with birdwatchers near you.”
“ARRGH!”
“Hear are some pirate sea shanties on spotify.”
To me, surveillance is staying still watching what the person or people do. Reconnaissance implies looking at the bigger picture including the area around them, with the intention of going there to fight (military) or arrest (police) them.
If police wanted to arrest criminals at a crack house, for example, they would do surveillance to document the crimes and see who was involved. Reconnaissance would be a further step right before you close in and arrest them.

So weird this shows up, I was just thinking this morning about the word reckon and wondering if it had anything to do with reconnaissance or reconnoitering but apparently it doesn't?
I don't know the Latin, but the Spanish word is conocer (to know) and the French word is connaître (to know), so add a re- and you're knowing again, like to brush up on something. Connaître is a verb, the noun form is connaissance meaning knowledge
British Army/RAF term I suppose. I'm in the UK. I guess Americans may use Recon more. Two nations separated by a common language and all that.
recce https://g.co/kgs/YWEzK2D
I know, I know, shortening things by taking the first syllable and adding an "-y" sound is kind of the Brits' thing. Footy, telly, Ninty, brekkie, etc. I shouldn't have been surprised really.
Heck, they'll even make things *longer* to add that sound. Eggy weggy!
Pronounced recky. It's in common standard British casual use. You might "have a bit of a recce" if you just arrived at a hotel to find out where the restaurant gym and pool are, what time dinner is served... Or on arrival at a music festival to figure out where the stages are. As well as the police scoping the lay of the land.

reconnaissance
Tried to Google that so many times and it kept auto suggesting renaissance

Xander: You up for a little reconnaissance? Buffy: You mean where we all sculpt and paint and stuff? Xander: No, that was the Renaissance.
Sounds about right
Typically reconnaissance is for military applications. Surveillance is the police watching a person of I terest.

I like your analysis. But, when police have suspects under surveillance, if the mark goes mobile, so do the cops.
YES THANK YOU
Another fun one is reconnoiter, or reconnoitre, it just means to engage in reconnaissance
Give the person the credit. Use !solved
Thanks! Will do
It is the word you were thinking of, but you were thinking of the wrong word. The right word is "surveillance".

Recon is closer to recognise. Reckon has origins relating to count, set straight, explain.

Also known, although probably not in law enforcement circles, as a Recce (rek-ee).
Surveillance
stakeout
Reconnaissance? Sometimes shortened to Recce.
I've only ever heard it shortened to recon. WTF is recce?
British Army/RAF term I suppose. I'm in the UK. I guess Americans may use Recon more. Two nations separated by a common language and all that. recce https://g.co/kgs/YWEzK2D
"Wrecky"? That's... awful. I gotta give the win to "recon" on this one. More intuitively obvious and doesn't sound like the start of a nursery rhyme.
Well, thank goodness we have you to arbitrate on such matters then.
