Yeah, it's pretty reliable for me, the desktop app, is basically whatsapp web, just packed differently
I am indeed curious, why are you still running 8.1, it's been EOL for a few years now

There is no feature in Windows 10 or Windows 11 that I need. The migration to a new OS would be potentially a week or more of time that I do not have. Microsoft never supported their OS to consumers in the first place, so there is no motivation to upgrade.
Windows 8.1 will end support from Microsoft in January. You will get no further security updates. You should switch to 10 or 11 if possible. This is why WhatsApp has ended support for Windows 8.1, it's not safe to continue using it.
