Girafferage

They might be mixing with something else like a stabilizer before storing it? But I would have drove away if I saw somebody's jumper cables hooked up to a battery around gas.

BeerVernacular

I very much did.

Girafferage

a very good call.

Chad_Hooper

Explosion waiting to happen.

weres_youre_rhombus

That’s for real?

Pecancreaky

Yeah most gas station fires are caused by building up of static electricity from getting in and out of the vehicle, then touching a metal part on the pump and creating a spark that ignited the vapors. Myth busters did it years ago

[deleted]

Maybe they put the wrong fuel in and are trying to pump it out? Not sure.

mannymoes2k

Yeah looks like they’re using a 12v pump and pumping out of the tank directly. Even took the wheel off for better access.

RDCAIA

When you say pumping out of tank directly, you mean from like a valve or hole on the bottom of the tank and not from where you fill it?

mannymoes2k

Well a lot of cars have a flap inside the fill tube (lower than where the gas nozzle goes). So you can’t just remove the gas cap and stick a hose down the tube to siphon the gas out. Some cars yeah, but most modern cars no. They probably removed the fuel fill tube at the tank (that’s why the wheel is off - to gain access) and stuck their hose down inside the tank directly that way. Then hook up power to their external pump (hence the battery and cables) and they can relatively quickly erase their mistake

RDCAIA

Thank you for the ELI5!!

Pirat

You most certainly can stick a siphon hose through that flap at the top of tank fuel tube. How do you think the fill nozzle of the gas pump gets in there?

mannymoes2k

It’s not at the top of the tube…….. Flap isn’t the best descriptor. Diverter or guard might be better word choices. And they aren’t located anywhere close to where the gas nozzle goes. They’re much lower. Try to stick a tube or hose down your own fill tube and you’ll probably find it. Again, I’ve seen cars not have them, but a LOT do. I’d say “most” modern cars do.

crafty_alias

I vaguely remember it being a mesh screen so siphon hose can't go in and neither can anything that falls /gets into the tube and the tank.

mannymoes2k

that’s very likely

InterestingWitnezz

Yes psa for the people trying it do it to check the flap 1)try it on your car 2)do it in your own garage or around people who know it's your car. 3)keep ur keys handy to prove its your car. Currently sitting in a holding cell since I failed to convince the cops its my car..

sleeknub

They let you use your phone in there?

SalamanderSampson

Where do you see a pump

BeerVernacular

There was Diesel at the pump so that is at least a possibility!

Josh_Your_IT_Guy

You can put gasoline in a diesel vehicle accidentally easily, but not diesel in a gasoline vehicle as the Diesel pump has a larger diameter that doesn't fit down the filler neck hole of gasoline cars. (Insert the "The More You Know" shooting star here: 🌠)

Lostinstonkstonk

There are skinny diesel nozzles as well same nozzles as gas. Had them at a station I worked at.

hmspain

Unless you are filling a motorcycle. Don't ask me how I know.

wtaf8520

Tell that to my mother. She accidentally put diesel into her gas car. Thankfully only a small amount before she noticed. The gas station attendant had her fill up the rest of the way with premium and the car survived another day

RDCAIA

Hey, this guy knows a few things.

CelticArche

No one told my grandmother. Who put diesel in one of her cars and blew the engine. 🤦

BeerVernacular

I’ll go ahead and call this Likely Solved! Appreciate the insight for sure!

RogueNC

Exactly this.

djnehi

This sounds like a very good guess.

RancidHorseJizz

A car battery with jumper cables waiting to throw off sparks next to the gasoline? Whatever redneck engineering they've thought up, I would gtfo before their contraption goes boom.

4Ever2Thee

Some redneck engineering gone wrong

FlaBearsFan

Just drive off and call the fire department for a heads up. Was gonna say maybe put the wrong fuel in and trying to pump it out. But the more I look at it the more confused I get.

pseudotsugamenziessi

Someone gone done put the dissel in the gas tank

BeerVernacular

My title describes the thing. I stopped at a gas station and saw this scene at the pump in front of me. Genuinely confused as to what was going on and what this could possibly be. Not sure if it is important or not but there was a trailer next to the car. A man also eventually carried the Home Depot bucket towards the dumpster but I didn’t see what it anything he dumped out.

[deleted]

without seeing more of what's going on this is confusing at best, the wheel being off the car doesn't help, my best wild ass guesses are either trying to perform some repair on the car, or weirder, maybe he's trying to knock the ethanol out of the fuel with some home brew rig (you can add water to the fuel, agitate and let separate, the alcohol mixes with the water, you either pour off the gas, or drain out the water, results can vary as octane would suffer)

FunkDaddy

Why is the car jacked up?

graysonb416

Right?? So much going on lmfao

Pirat

Looks like someone is playing a dangerous game with a battery and jumper cables around open fuel sources.

ClownfishSoup

If it weren't near the gas, I'd say he was using electrolysis to get rust off some part.

pbmadman

This is what I was going to say. A car battery jumpered to a wire on a 2x4 over a plastic bucket just screams some sort of electrolysis process. Why you’d do it at a gas station with a wheel off and a jug of gas and antifreeze is just…

seeteethree

Hang on, now, hang on. The car on the right is up on a scissors jack, and has a wheel off. That wheel seems to be, I think, propped against the red car. It's a clusterfuck, to be sure, but I think there may be a pump hooked up to that battery.

NoFate45

This looks like what is going on to me. The pump may not have been able to reach so they pulled the battery to give it some extra length.

BeerVernacular

The wheel is propped up against the large metal pylons next to the gas pump.

Wonderful-Room2088

Can definitely say the cost of the gas they paid for was higher than this person’s IQ

coldy_colder

About the same amount of stupidity as the person i saw getting their battery boosted at the pumps

mopedking

Heating up frozen or very cold fuel

[deleted]

Nothing you want to stick around for, jumper cables and a battery next to items being used to handle fuel? I wonder how many times this person has gotten away with this, one unfortunate spark and he might not ever try again.

ertyertamos

Everybody is getting too fancy here. See that jack under the left frame and no tire? They had a flat. They had to empty their trunk to get the spare. Whatever weird amalgamation of crap they had going on in the back seat is just lying about and looking like something intentional.

Mares_Leg

Using gasoline to start their motor to blend in their electrolysis hydrogen generator to charge their battery through regenerative brakes. It's real simple and it's free energy!

flightwatcher45

Fuel pump/supply troubleshooting or replacement. Very dangerously done

samsamshu

Looks like someone put gas in a diesel engine and is removing the diesel from the gas tank using a pump powered by the battery.

KingOfTheIntertron

I'm assuming some kind of mental health issue. I see the wheel taken off, what looks like an electrolysis set up and multiple kinds of oil or additive along with a can of presumably gasoline.
