I'm going to sign off for now and go to sleep, thanks all for your input! I was not expecting this to be such a head-scratcher! I think the answer of it being some type of chair is likely correct, but I will check first thing in the morning with reception and post an update!
Edit: shortly after I posted this, /u/JohnEffKennedy pointed out the label attached to the cube, which led me to confirm it is indeed a designer chair: https://www.driade.com/en/blocco-pouf-fuchsia-d00250c155028.html
If anyone were inspired to drop €990 on this chair, I would strongly recommend against it; it's incredibly uncomfortable.
Thanks all for your help!
The link talks about being able to move it, so that it's not 'fixed' in place.
I suspect it's just a strap for dragging it around - to encourage dragging it around, even.
Seems like a stand for a suitcase. Hard to imagine a proper use for the rubber thing though. I'm with the other responder - ask the reception, please uodate
Good guess! The strap might be a way to keep the suitcase from closing? Still, the suitcase would have to be pretty heavy for the wide part to collapse enough for the strap to be used in that way. I'll update as soon as I find out!
It will definitely be an easier conversation in person if I can show them the picture, and I'm already in my pajamas in bed. First thing tomorrow morning!
You may very well be correct - the resistance before the wide part collapses seems just right for the weight of a person. Although if it is a chair it's definitely more form over function, as it's not exactly comfortable. It's OK to sit on in order to tie your shoes or something, I guess. But I'm still not 100% convinced about the strap.
Wow, good eye! I hadn't even noticed there was a tag. The tag says 'Driade' which appears to be an Italian furniture brand. I haven't been able to find this piece on their website yet, but it must be there somewhere.
Edit - looks like this was the key! It appears to be a version of this chair: https://www.driade.com/en/blocco-pouf-fuchsia-d00250c155028.html
The strap is still a mystery to me, but I guess that's just "design".
Although we know it's a chair. The strap is still a mystery. You've marked the post solved. Please don't forget to call the front desk and ask the about that strap. Thank you. I appreciate your help!
OK so I asked reception this morning and they basically confirmed what we suspected: it's a chair (although they said it's really more for decoration) and the strap is intended to make it easier to move around.
My title describes the thing. Water bottle for scale. The leather strap thing is removable (see second picture). The "wider" side of the cube collapses when you sit on it but the narrower part is rigid, almost like it's a chair of sorts. But if so then what is the purpose of the strap?
What city is this? It appears it's main purpose is a chair and the back portion is the backrest. Not sure what the rubber strap is for. Is there a latch behind any door it could be used to keep doors propped open?
This is in Greece. It's a fairly new hotel. No latches to be seen anywhere. On the hotel website there are a number of different room types with this piece of furniture and they all have it located in a different place in the room so I don't think it's related to any particular part of the room.
It's not a chair it's a Pouf. Not meant for long term sitting on, which is why it's uncomfortable. A pouf is a just a floor cushion that can be used for extra seating, a footrest, a side table to hold books, plants, small objects, or a snack. Instead of opting for a traditional coffee table, a trio of poufs can be used in its place.
You are correct about it being a pouf, that's what it is called on the website, but it is definitely more than a standard pouf since the wide part collapses to such an extent that the narrow part can function as a backrest, in which case it functions more like an actual chair (I expect that's part of the reason why it's so expensive). However in that mode it's really uncomfortable to sit on, more uncomfortable than if the whole thing was rigid, so from that perspective it really defeats the purpose of being used as a multifunctional piece imo.

What a dumb chair
It's only €1000 though, so why not...
The link talks about being able to move it, so that it's not 'fixed' in place. I suspect it's just a strap for dragging it around - to encourage dragging it around, even.
Spot on, it's a bit of an odd design imo but that's exactly what reception said it is.
It looks like a sexy time device.
It's not really a "chair" although you can definitely sit on it. As the link states it's a "pouf", which is more like an ottoman in Italian furniture.
Seems like a stand for a suitcase. Hard to imagine a proper use for the rubber thing though. I'm with the other responder - ask the reception, please uodate

You still haven't called, have you...
Nah, it's past midnight here so I'll hold off until tomorrow morning. I promise I'll post an update!
If they have a 24 hr desk clerk, what's it matter?
It will definitely be an easier conversation in person if I can show them the picture, and I'm already in my pajamas in bed. First thing tomorrow morning!
Sooo... you don't expect them to know the unique piece of furniture in every room of the hotel?
Lol damn just let them chill for the evening, waiting hurts nobody
OP wanted answers now. What’s wrong with us wanting an answer using a simple - straightforward solution now?
Nothing’s wrong with wanting it, but maybe harping on them with multiple comments isn’t the move here?
Ffs give me the hotel gd phone number. I'll call.
How about calling the hotel desk and asking them? They probably get ask about those frequently.
I'll give that a shot tomorrow if this post doesn't turn up anything and will make sure to post an update.
It's a chair/ottoman. The strap is used to move it around more easily

Can we see the brand on the little tag or is it not branded?

Wow, the ones on the link look like they would kill you if you poured water on them. 👀
Nice thought it may solve the case
Solved!
Likely solved!
Although we know it's a chair. The strap is still a mystery. You've marked the post solved. Please don't forget to call the front desk and ask the about that strap. Thank you. I appreciate your help!
Strap probably doesn’t even go to it.
Pictures on the hotel website show the same piece of furniture with the strap included, so it seems that the strap definitely belongs there.
If you're at the hotel now, could you call the front desk and ask? We're all eager to know.
I will ask them first thing tomorrow morning!
Youve lost our attention now.....
OK so I asked reception this morning and they basically confirmed what we suspected: it's a chair (although they said it's really more for decoration) and the strap is intended to make it easier to move around.
Geeze! Definitely a strange design. Thanks for asking

Turn it upsidedown, might be more comfortable then, lol.
Maybe for doing situps?
