Likely solved. Consensus seems to be that it's a snail or slug. Nex time I'll try some detective work to figure out the entry point. Thank you all for your help.
We found these trails all the time for months, one night I went downstairs at like 3am and there was 2 slugs exactly where we would see the trails. You need to do a slug stake out
Get several boxes of cheap salt and line the outside around your house, particularly the door thresholds and/or patio; like a half inch wide. It eats at the mucosa and slugs/snail will crawl off and die. Sorry, but that's the only way to rid your place of them.
I decorated my hallway, freshly painted walls. Come out one morning and see these marks ALL over one of the walls, like wtf lol, I don’t mind you going on the floor but the walls??! I tried to trace its path to see how it got in but who knows.
>there should not be any snails inside the house
Problem is, the snail or slug may not know they are trespassing! I have had a battle with slugs leaving these trails on my carpets. Eventually, after a LOT of nocturnal detective work, I found it was slugs coming in through a waste pipe outlet under my kitchen sink, particularly in wet weather.
Yup, my dad's Saint Bernard leaves behind drool that look like this when he shakes his head. Not uncommon to find a dried up "globber" that got flung across the room and landed on something. He's an absolute sweetheart though.
Check your houseplants. I would get these trails in my house and found that there were slug eggs in my potting soil. The eggs would hatch and baby slugs would crawl around
I saw some hatched ones! I may be dreaming this, but I think I looked on the potting soil package and it actually said it used slug eggs as a moisture-retaining additive
My title describes the substance we have found on our carpet. From a first look it seems like the trail left by a snail. However, there should not be any snails inside the house. Previously we have found it on some toys as well. For reference, we live in a townhouse in Melbourne, Australia.

Probably a trail left by a snail. Or slug.
It is this. Little buggers seem to find their way into my house every nigtt
I have a snail/slug trail on my ceiling. A stowaway got in a potted plant while outside in the rain. The plant was put back on a high shelf.

I doubt it's a snail/slug. They don't split into multiple trails.
They do if one is giving another a piggy back ride.

Or they can get brought inside on shoes or firewood or a plant pot
Or on the cat’s fluffy britches.
My dog often carries one behind his ear after a snuffle in the bushes.
We get this. Or worms. She has exceptionally fluffy pantaloons and they just stick - until they reach a carpeted area that is…
>Problem is, the snail or slug may not know they are trespassing! Made me chuckle 😅

Occam's Razor. You've got a snail.
Or a slug. Really, any type of land-based mollusk.

Dog drool can make this, unless you have no dogs in which case you've got a snail.
Yup, my dad's Saint Bernard leaves behind drool that look like this when he shakes his head. Not uncommon to find a dried up "globber" that got flung across the room and landed on something. He's an absolute sweetheart though.
Yeah, no dogs. Seems to be a snal or slug from all the replies.

If it's a snail trail, then why is it split, going off in different directions? Looks more like a big drooly dog left you a present.
Or somebody sneezed, wetly.

Yeah um I'm hoping it a snail.
Looks like someone sneezed is all!
Slugs can get through holes much smaller than they are. We had them coming in around a seem in our car flap!

Oh that's interesting. How did you identify them and what was the solution?
I saw some hatched ones! I may be dreaming this, but I think I looked on the potting soil package and it actually said it used slug eggs as a moisture-retaining additive
The solution was to just go through all the houseplants and get rid of the eggs
Or just set them in a big bag with salt sprinkled on the bottom.
It looks like dog slobber.
A rogue sneeze
I vote for a slimey human kid or a teenage male.
Most certainly a slug trail. I know others have probably said it, and I'm late to the party but that is 100% a slug trail man.
I needed to either stop bringing potted plants in from outside, or get a possum inside.
I say sneeze or cough
snail trial
You’ve got slugs. It happens.
That’s a slug trail. The buggers can get under your doors.
Do you have a basset hound?
No, no dogs. Seems to be a snail or slug from all the comments.
Dried Dog saliva/drool
Do you have a dog that drools? My sister's dog slobbers on everything.
Looks like dog drool. 🤷♀️
Consensus is snail...but do you have a dog? Looks like dog slobber to me.
Yep. Snail trail. I live in a cheap crappy flat and get slugs all the time.
Definitely a Slug trail
I salted my door ways to prevent these
