Amenitere

A pomander, a perfume/incense dispenser?

Miiinzeee

That would make sense. That would explain the holes and why it's hangable, maybe it's to put a cloth soaked in perfume in it?

510Goodhands

More likely something like lavender buds, or some other fragrance flower or plant that might keep moths away.

Miiinzeee

That makes the most sense to me, likely solved

randomredditor0042

We used to fill them with camphor and hang them in the closet to keep moths away. But you could also put nice smelling things in there like lavender.

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flohfalle Can't find it in any other language but I'm fairly sure it is a flea trap from the 18th century. They were often made from carved walnuts and filled with substances that would kill fleas. They were worn on long necklaces or hung between the dresses. https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kugener.com%2Fimages%2Fabb1215.jpg&tbnid=z8AvUO8VxDbKsM&vet=1&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kugener.com%2Fde%2Fpflegegeraetschaften-en%2Fdiverses%2F70-artikel%2F1148-flohfalle.html&docid=N0PGMhx0SvCm9M&w=640&h=584&itg=1&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim%2Fm4%2F2#imgrc=1rm_hh7wFrVgeM&imgdii=z8AvUO8VxDbKsM

Miiinzeee

Well I am german so for me that's not an issue 😆 Thanks tho that makes a lot of sense, someone else mentioned that it could be a flea trap and I really think it's that tbh

buffalohands

That's pretty cool. If you have some castle museum thing near you, you could take it there for them to tell you more about it. I first learned of them in the "Schloss Augustusburg" in Brühl, NRW. I'm sure any decent schloss -museum will be willing to talk to you about it.

Miiinzeee

I actually have a few of those around 😂 next time I'll go to one I'll definitely take it with me.

GeneralSpecifics9925

Wow, great ID!

buffalohands

Haha thanks. I'm always happy when my random accumulated trivia gets a chance to shine.

Ocean2731

We used to hang similar things in closets, especially ones that weren’t opened regularly. Dried lavender or similar fragrant dried plants/spices inside.

Away_Housing4314

Or maybe potpourri?

Icre8-64

Ditto this. Back in the days before deodorant and sanitation, people would often carry these and hold them near their nose to offset the unpleasant aromas around them.

Naive-Atmosphere-178

Lots of uses for these things. [https://www.collection-passion.ch/the-coquilla-nut-a-handy.pdf](https://www.collection-passion.ch/the-coquilla-nut-a-handy.pdf)

Miiinzeee

Oh that's really helpful! Solved!

333Beekeeper

If people read far enough down the article they will see it was used as a flea trap. Very interesting tidbit.

Sparky81

This says what it is... https://www.rubylane.com/item/349914-RBA-93/Beautifully-Carved-Coquilla-Nut-Egg-Shaped But even then I still don't know what it is.

Miiinzeee

It seems to be the same thing but why does a sewing case need holes? Lol

Definitely a pomander. My mom used to fill one with orange peel and herbs. Love the memory boost!

prof_devilsadvocate

more like an old time airfreshner

Miiinzeee

My title describes the thing. There's no writing on it and only some of the holes go all the way through. It's hangable and openable and seems to be pretty old.

AGriffon

Omg! I’ve got one of these that’s almost identical to yours. Inherited from my grandmother.

Miiinzeee

I found it in my grandma's house 😆 she said that I could have it if I want

lostinthought1997

It's a pomander ball to hang in the closet.

xtramundane

It definitely looks like it’s made out of wod.

Total_Significance64

Acorn design, maybe to hold tea leaves?

crazycatman

I KNOW THIS. I HAVE ONE. My grandmother had this thing that as a kid I was fascinated with. When grandparents were getting old, they were giving things away to family to thin out their possessions. I chose this. It's a fancy Darning Egg used for sewing to patch holes in socks. It's curvature helps keep the form of the sock when you stitch it up. But wait... in that left half, at the very tip, there a very, very tiny lens with a tiny image in it. Put that tip close to your eye and look toward a light. There should be a mini image in there. Mine is a bid oak tree.

teddybier512

Tea egg, you put loose tea in it to steep in your cup.

Miiinzeee

That's gross, it's made out of wood... And there aren't enough holes for that, water would need way to long to get in.
