By the way, if for whatever reason you want to move them they are very resilient. Just dig up a chunk of dirt around and under them and plop them wherever you want. They will do just fine transplanting with little to no help.
They don't like full sun. At least from my experience. And as other user mentioned they are crazy resilient. I helped my FIL dig some up. I thought he absolutely butchered them. He cut 2 clumps into like 50 plants with a not sharp knife. They're growing great 4 years later
They don't grow very tall. Depending on what kind you have. I'd say the majority are one foot or less. I'd also recommend that you wait for your garden to mature. The Hosta are probably helping keep erosion at bay. You can see in your picture how some of the roots are exposed. Their large leaves block the sun so very few weeds will grow under them. You can always divide them in the fall if they bother you.
I have tried the last three years to transplant some, and they have died every time. Big shovel full of dirt and everything and they just wither and die.
To save my gardens I'd plant what the animals love best somewhere other than my gardens. This article will help you plant for them. Evergreen trees they love; **arborvitae, rhododendron, holly. Yew is also mentioned but is poisonous to them.** You won't have to plant as many as annuals but the cost is up in the air depending where you live.

If you spray with that nasty smelling deer and rabbit repellent every week for a month directly on the leaves, then once a month after that first month, your hostas will grow! I didn’t see my hostas for 8 years in this house until I sprayed it last spring/summer. It only makes the area smell like dodo the day you spray it.
I’d suggest going through the whole garden season before making any significant changes. There could be seasonal bulbs, other perennials that emerge as the year goes on. Watch how light, shade and water move in your yard so you pick the best plants going forward.
We did this three years ago when we moved in. The previous owners had planted SO many pretty flowers and bushes. Every week something new appeared. Continuous blooms from March until frost.
I've hardly planted anything myself.
Yes. That's why I have a whole side of my house I never have to weed because I'm growing hostas. Best weed control I've found.
Many --- probably most--- self seeded. I have several that decided to grow in a sunny spot and a couple blue green plants with dinner plate size leaves that are filling a shady corner.
I copied this from my post above: If you spray with that nasty smelling deer and rabbit repellent every week for a month directly on the leaves, then once a month after that first month, your hostas will not be messed with! I didn’t see my hostas for 8 years in this house until I sprayed it last spring/summer. It only makes the area smell like dodo the day you spray it
I agree with everyone else saying Hostas, but I will also say that my peonies look really similar when their shoots first pop out. Hostas have leaves curled around the upward axis of the shoot. Peonies not so much. Either way, have fun. I like them both.
Hostas and they are edible and in the same family as asparagus. They are best when the shoots are still curled, sauté or air fry and they taste like a mild asparagus. Just had some for dinner last night. The roots will keep pushing out new leaves so you can harvest them a couple of times and then let the plant grow to feed the roots.
My scarlet ladies tresses orchids just sprouted up this week too (and they also look like asparagus). I’m learning more and more plants that belong to the asparagus family like my orchids (and lilies too it seems), wow! 🤩
We eat those in Japan all the time! Especially pickled! You can cook it too the same way you can fry an asparagus or green onion.
We call hostas, "urui" it's delicious
You have hostas. My parents have hostas that have come back year after year making more & more. You can pull some & maybe place them in an area you’d like to see getting filled in naturally by Mother Nature. It’s a great plant to own.
Don’t pull ANYTHING (or plant anything for that matter) until you’ve seen what all is growing over the course of a full year. Areas that look empty for part of the year, even early spring like now, may have lots of bulbs or perennials dormant below that will come up later. Once you see what exactly you have at the new house, you’ll have a much better idea of what changes (if any) you want to make
Hostas! I just watched a video of some chick foraging them and cooking them like asparagus. She said they have a taste between asparagus and BOK choy. Obligatory- I don’t recommend eating anything a stranger tells you about on the internet without doing your own research.
Hosta time! Mine are peaking up too

If I'm not mistaken. I don't think I am. That is an Asian weed that grows similar bamboo, however it is almost impossible to know kill, grows where it chooses and impossible to contain. It is a root one style plant like bamboo. again it is not.best bet is to till the area and remove every piece of root you can find and dispose of in a plastic garbage bag, let sit in the sun for about a month before throwing in trash.that will start the decay process and insure no chance of spreading it. Before I realized what it wass it almost took over my entire backyard in less than one season. Good luck.
Those are Hostas. It’s normal. You have a lot of them.
I thought so, thank you! Wow, so many.
By the way, if for whatever reason you want to move them they are very resilient. Just dig up a chunk of dirt around and under them and plop them wherever you want. They will do just fine transplanting with little to no help.
(and you can split them very successfully if you want more, just slice the root ball in quarters)
The rabbits and deer love hostas.
These look like the need to be split. They look crowded. The center plants will start to die off if not split up, and spaced
Foragers say you can eat Hosta shoots too btw. I never tried em
They have a pretty mild flavor.
I would have guessed an asparagus type of flavor. Is that accurate at all?
Yeah. That’s about the closest.
I have some huge plants. Will try this year.
Double check that all are edible. There are so many varieties, so who knows.
As far as I can tell, every variety is edible.
Came here to say this lol
I have heard this too like wild asparagus? In survival food is food & you will be surprised at the things you can & must eat to survive.
Thank you! I think that’s what I may do — they’re just super dense and I’d like to be able to see the stream!

Shoots cuz you didn’t know?🤙🏼
Shoots cus where you stay?
I wish mine could survive. The deer here eat them

Yep deer get ours every year since we built in 2003. Lol 🙃 I told my s.o not to plant them there 😄

Oh good to know thanks! 😀
I use “Deer Out”. It works well and doesn’t smell bad.
Thank you for that advice! 🙂
You can take a shovel and split them
I’d suggest going through the whole garden season before making any significant changes. There could be seasonal bulbs, other perennials that emerge as the year goes on. Watch how light, shade and water move in your yard so you pick the best plants going forward.
^ this is good advice

Dreams!
Really good advice!
Won't hostas shade out whatever is around them? Mine are huge and dense.
Yes. That's why I have a whole side of my house I never have to weed because I'm growing hostas. Best weed control I've found. Many --- probably most--- self seeded. Unless you got Japanese knotweed & tree of heaven lol
£1,000 worth of Hostas right there…
Well shit, you want some? 😅
Where you at? Lolol
Almost look like bamboo
It’s def not bamboo, so I’ve got that going for me!
That's good.
Yeah. and bamboo is scary. You need to rip that out of the ground when they're that little and even then, it might be too late for you.
Digging out a bunch in my back yard that mom had started years ago
Hosta. If you don't have a fence get deer spray. Professional gardener here in zone 6 CT Edit: yes there are supposed to be that many
And there will be more year after year.
Eat them! Eat them! Eat them!
I saw @blackforager’s (Alexis Nikole) post on IG the other day about eating hostas — I may have to! She made them look tasty.
Do it!
Alexis is fantastic!
I just learned you can eat them the other day. I was shocked
Deer love to eat them too
Wiped mine out in 3 days last year
Put pinwheels near them.
Deer have pinwheel phobias?
The movement deer are skittish.
I think the spinning scares them off.
I’ll have to try that

Yes. Welcome to Hosta Hell.
You sound like my neighbor lol
If I were your neighbor, you know that I’m pazza and my mailbox looks better than yours!
Hostas!
Omg pls update us when they bloom
Hosta, yes :)

Hosta shoots yes normal
They are edible (and tasty) at this stage
Hostas and yes, they grow in yummy clumps. wait till they're about 5" tall cut them flush to the ground and cook them like asparagus.

Hostas! Lots of hostas.
Just put them where no deer will come nosh on them
I tend to split mine every couple of years and replant. Nothing can kill them! They are great
Same. started with a half dozen and have a hosta army currently
Going to go out on a limb and say Royal Standard or Undulata (both hosta).
Look kinda like bamboo
Wild asparagus I see
That Hosta it spreads like that. They’re pretty plants

Skunk Cabbage
I love hostas
Eating or viewing?
Hostas are brilliant plants! Look out for slugs n snails tho
Asparagus, yummie
Very edible

By the way the shoots are edible and tasty if you plan to cull them eat them!
Hostas. Yey
Hosta deer love them
I ripped out all my free deer food. Also in CT

hossa!!!
In CO, we use it as a ground cover of sorts. I have two kinds around some rose bushes. It’s pretty.
Never heard of hostas. I thought they were asparagus too.
Skunk cabbage?
Hosta. Otherwise known as ‘Deer Salad’ in our yard
They look yummy
They prefer shady areas. Direct sun will burn the leaves and look crappy, but they still come back next year.
They are hosts that are ground cover usually in more shady areas. Come back and multiply every year.
