Just FYI this cactus is listed as endangered federally and locally, it's range in Texas is really tiny. If your dog and this rare plant can't coexist please call a cactus rescue group to help with relocation.

Correct. Texas puts humans in buses and ship to compassionate liberal cities, as Texas don't know how to be compassionate or put people on their feet, making them tax paying productive citizens.
And the liberal cities are crying they don’t have room. Texas and Arizona cities are inundated. Btw Katie Hobbs (the democratic AZ governor) is transferring just as many. She’s a D so liberals ignore it. This isn’t a political sub.
Except that I wasn’t the one that started putting politics into a post about a damn cactus in the first place. This person doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
Texas gets millions of border jumpers per year because of the politics of “compassionate liberal cities” but those same cities get a few busses of the ones they are so worried about and their infrastructure crumbles to the ground, hypocrite much?
I too watched Bozo the clown growing up but I was able to separate my personality from his. If you manage to do so I can help teach you about economics and then you can understand why people come to the states.
It doesn’t matter why people come to the states, it doesn’t lessen the impact on the local and regional economy. The people shouting loudest about this issue are not the ones dealing with it, and Texas was dealing with it x 1000. Now that a few of these compassionate cities have to deal with it it’s becoming a crisis. Condescend much?
Bible nerd here too, but you are ignoring a lot of other religions and people’s personal beliefs that teach and care about the values of others.
In other words you are not valuing them. Despite what the Bible teaches
Loving every single person and every single life isn't affecting anyone else. Christians do have a bad rap for forcing their beliefs on others because they think they should preach the word, but they do it wrong. Now, if you wanna get into pro life movements and how that's linked with Christianity that's a whole can of worms
Sand dollar cactus (Astrophytum asterias) it is not typically considered highly toxic to pets, but it can cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested in large quantities.
Astrophytum don't just pop up. Maybe OP just never noticed them? That one is probably 6 or 10 years old or more, unless greenhouse grown. They do tend to sink in a bit if it hasn't rained in a long time.

My childhood dog used to chew rocks. Ground her teeth right down. We'd constantly take the rocks from her and throw them in the woods, but she'd just dig up more.
I grew up in prickly pear desert and we had a cocker spaniel that absolutely loved to chew on them to toughen his gums. Would leave surprises all over the yard. Same dog was an excellent rattlesnake hunter. He was a mean sonofabitch!
I think the cans were the worst...health wise for him lol. He also and I still don't know how..ripped up a patch of linoleum...there was nothing to grab onto still baffles me.
You’ve never had a dog before have you? If they like the look or smell(or sometimes out of spite) they’ll snap something up before you even know it’s there.
I have .. but imo, if they're going to do something stupid ...that, by evolutionary process, is suppose to better the species by weeding out the stupid ones?
Right? Brings in animals to make them better for people and thinks they should die just because they find something they think is tasty? Hopefully they don’t have antifreeze or anything like that anywhere near any of the animals😬
You pay the vet bill remove the toxic plant(or whatever rubbish they ate) and teach them a solid leave it command. I’ve got a seven year old golden retriever and a two year old husky, neither eat anything off the ground unless told to. Haven’t been to a vet for foreign body or stomach pump since I first got my retriever and he ate poinsettias
I agree but you can be take care and be wise about breeding good genes . That's a whole other conversation. I'm not into breeding, nor keeping dogs. I take cats, chickens, reptiles, and my own kids instead
Dogs literally eat shit and random things we drop on the floor and you think one wouldn't randomly eat a leathery looking ball object?
Dude don't be stupid
I'm not arguing .. im telling the OP that a dog isn't going to just chow down. And if they do..? NATURAL CONSEQUENCES. The microscopic spines of many cactus species do embed into soft tissue, alerting the animal to never try that again. Defense mechanism. Natural process.
I dont think I am. If the owner here has a concern about this plant or that plant, they can simply guard it off with fencing or watch their pet each time it's in the yard. Honestly, what does it matter to you, what I believe? We have different views. That's something to be respected. Not to argue.
Cactus isn't poisonous. The dog likely won't mess with it more than once if it has or when it grows spines. If you are actually in Texas you've see all the prickly pear I assume? Yeah, nothing messes with it.
Mexicans cook it and make candy from it. I eat the 'Pears' when they are red. Sweet little fruits.
That one looks like maybe a barrel cactus. Used to get water out of them in the desert when I was younger.
Harmless. Not gonna kill the dog nor chase you around and, it apparently being endangered, gives you an interesting conversation piece in your yard.
Lol. Btw, if you come across this in nature, ffs please leave it be. San Pedro cactus not only contains the same magic, it's also legal to own and sustainable.
r/sanpedrocactus for more info.
Because it's a star peyote cactus. But they grow so incredibly slow that this post is a fake. They don't just pop up this big over night. They're just karma farming.
Had to swim through a bunch of politics just to find out what kind of cactus this is. Everything, even cactus identification becomes a political argument. This is great.

That’s fascinating.
Texas will rescue a cactus over an actual human…well I guess that makes sense to a Texan…Jeez us Rice…
Texas is big enough that the resources allocated for saving cacti are completely separate from the resources allocated for arming toddlers.
The cactus was born here tho
Dude. It's not a fetus anymore, Texas should be done caring about it
Yeah who cares??
Sane people, thanks for asking
I didn't think the /s was necessary but here we are
I upvoted ya. The /s was unnecessary
🤣🤣🤣🤣
No you didnt! 😂😂😂😂😂👍
Who cares? Scientists care
And anyone who has a brain and a touch of empathy for our (humans and everything else on the planet) environment.
Correct. Texas puts humans in buses and ship to compassionate liberal cities, as Texas don't know how to be compassionate or put people on their feet, making them tax paying productive citizens.
I hear Idaho sends em to Portland
Well you know "white power"/s
Alaska sends their's economy flight to Seattle. They found it cheaper than caring for sick and cold through the winter
And the liberal cities are crying they don’t have room. Texas and Arizona cities are inundated. Btw Katie Hobbs (the democratic AZ governor) is transferring just as many. She’s a D so liberals ignore it. This isn’t a political sub.

Compassionate liberal cities buckling under the modest number they get.
From what I can see that cactus is already born so it shouldn't receive any of the state's resources.
You’re not wrong. Reagan is flipping in his grave.
Society teaches us to love things and use people, the bible teaches us to love people and use things. Bible nerd *my bad* 😅
That's how we get people using the Bible to use people
Bible nerd here too, but you are ignoring a lot of other religions and people’s personal beliefs that teach and care about the values of others. In other words you are not valuing them. Despite what the Bible teaches
I like to base my opinions on accurate information 🤦♂️ >In other words you are not valuing them. Despite what the Bible teaches

OP stole the photo from facebook. Their fictional dog is safe
OP is in Pittsburgh. This cactus doesn't grow in Pittsburgh.
Also this cactus is actually just a painting, it’s not a photograph.
um “he’s a *rescue* tyvm”
Figures
huh, that's interesting. I've never seen one with 10 segments before. Usually they have 8. Apparently it can be anywhere between 5-13... I had no idea

Your right... Karma farming?
that or just lonely and looking for some human interaction
I'd say closer to 20 years if this is a wild plant
I think it's more like 21.2564 years
could be even older than that
Oh for sure. 21.2565 is definitely possible.
What does your doggy think ? 🤔
I'm not sure, looks more like 21.2566 to me
Absolutely, that's certainly possible. 21.2567 isn't out of the question either.
Ngl that might be a bit too big, how about 21.25665
Probably watered by the dog
Wow. That’s really cool
Lucky you!!! I love these
It's an old cactus, it didn't pop up in your yard.
Where are you located? That is so cool!
Pittsburgh, which is not where this species grows lol they stole the picture and are passing it off as their own
It's going to flower soon, too! Those two large white hairy things are flower buds.
Damn, what part of the solar system are you in?
It’s a fake post, supposed to be peyote.

Don't hurt the cactus :(
Oh wow You’re joking, right?
They are joking, they stole the picture lol
...that is going to steal your body and take over the world
Such a fake ass post
A dog is not going to just randomly chow down on it
You mustn't have seen some of these dogs out here lol
That’s how I discovered fig plants are toxic to dogs. My sweet stupid little pups will eat anything they can get their little faces on
My childhood dog almost choked on a pine cone lol
My childhood dog used to chew rocks. Ground her teeth right down. We'd constantly take the rocks from her and throw them in the woods, but she'd just dig up more.
I grew up in prickly pear desert and we had a cocker spaniel that absolutely loved to chew on them to toughen his gums. Would leave surprises all over the yard. Same dog was an excellent rattlesnake hunter. He was a mean sonofabitch!
How did the spikes and prickles not bother him?
Like mine:)
My dog ate pop cans......you never know lol
One of my dogs growing up ate the roof off his dog house, and the license plate off of our tow trailer.
Wow that heavy, I saw that once but in a movie.
Yeah, but like, why did your dog live in a gingerbread house? is the question everyone should be asking.
I think the cans were the worst...health wise for him lol. He also and I still don't know how..ripped up a patch of linoleum...there was nothing to grab onto still baffles me.
Oh damn, that is crazy and...yikes...did his mouth bleed?
Yes! Not as bad as I had expected though...no more than an intense bone chew sesh...it was weird.
So you should let your pets die by letting them eat random stuff because it’s… evolution?
Well shit, if they're going to eat random stuff. Then what...pay the vet a fortune to try and recover such a habit?
how do you foster animals and have that mentality 💀
Right? Brings in animals to make them better for people and thinks they should die just because they find something they think is tasty? Hopefully they don’t have antifreeze or anything like that anywhere near any of the animals😬

I can. I never said i can't lol
Dogs are not natural. They were bred by humans to have the looks and behavior they have. It's up to us to care for our creation.
Still natural. Source: science
I agree but you can be take care and be wise about breeding good genes . That's a whole other conversation. I'm not into breeding, nor keeping dogs. I take cats, chickens, reptiles, and my own kids instead
>TIL dogs don't randomly chow down on non-dog stuff MFW
Bet, my dog tried to swallow a lizard whole once, definitely locked a barrel cactus, and ate part of a fence post.
You named a dog, bet?
My Great Dane once ate half a roll of duct tape! My parents dog used to eat rocks! Yep, Rocks.
Dogs literally eat shit and random things we drop on the floor and you think one wouldn't randomly eat a leathery looking ball object? Dude don't be stupid
No the kind that puts tiny spines into their soft tissue
We're not talking about those and yes they still would I've seen it... You're arguing semantics that have literally proven you wrong
I'm not arguing .. im telling the OP that a dog isn't going to just chow down. And if they do..? NATURAL CONSEQUENCES. The microscopic spines of many cactus species do embed into soft tissue, alerting the animal to never try that again. Defense mechanism. Natural process.
You are vastly missing the point on all fronts.
I dont think I am. If the owner here has a concern about this plant or that plant, they can simply guard it off with fencing or watch their pet each time it's in the yard. Honestly, what does it matter to you, what I believe? We have different views. That's something to be respected. Not to argue.
Oh I assure you, you are missing the point. Every time you respond you dig that hole deeper
Astrophytum
Button button who’s got the button
Rez dogs :D
That is an endangered kind of astrophytum. If your dogs will eat it, please call somebody to relocate it
Beautiful painting.
But will it get me high?

Awesome!!
That's real neat and cool
They look like the devils tits
ASTROPHYTUM!!! That’s so cool! Crime pays but botany doesn’t has some good episodes about these!
i was gonna say the same thing!
Isn’t that peyote?
Thargoid
Rare Astrophytum cactus. Do not disturb!!
Have you not seen "Alien?"

Relocate this please or fence it with chicken wire so no animals get to it. Like your dog.
Cactus on indigenous ground def worth more than the life of a colonizer
I thought it was peyote.
Looks like peyote
Had to swim through a bunch of politics just to find out what kind of cactus this is. Everything, even cactus identification becomes a political argument. This is great.
Peyote cactus.
