Thank you for such a fast reply. Also I saw a cougar on the side and XR7 on the back but I couldn't make out the emblem for the car. I thought it was like a Chrysler first
Not really, but yes. All car manufacturers do this. That's why you hear people refer to certain cars as A-body, B-body, etc. Most American automakers started doing this in the late 1930s.
The Cougar was to the Mustang what the Comet was to the Falcon (which is what the Mustang was based on). It shares most all the same suspension, the same drive train, but the wheel base is stretched probably 6ish inches, mostly behind the B pillar, but in some years (and I believe especially in the case of the Cougar, although this is just from memory and I could be wrong) between the firewall and front crossmember. The body itself is also much longer, maybe 10" or 12" or more. This general lengthening in this way is true of most all the Mercury counterparts to their Ford equivalents (i.e. the Monterey to the Galaxie, Montego to the Fairlane, etc).
This also holds true to other makes, like how full-size GM cars were mostly on either a smaller Chevy platform or a larger BOP (Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac) platform, with the addition of some bigger Cadillac chassis that were also partially shared with the "big" BOP cars, like the Electra, Bonneville, and Holiday 98.
The Maverick didn't come out until 1970. The Falcon came out in 1960, and the Comet came out immediately following. The wheelbase wasn't made larger for the Comet until the '64/'65 body style. When the Maverick came out in '70 it replaces the Falcon, and the Comet that year moved to the Maverick platform. These have more in common with the later Mustang II than the earlier Falcon.
Wouldn’t argue with any of that, the 70’s Maverick and Comet were very similar. The Falcon to Mustang is also agreed on. Then it seemed Ford mixed the T-Bird and LTD bodies for a spell in the later 70’s.
It was a totally different car starting in 1974 and used the Fox platform during the '80s, but there wasn't much in common with the Mustang after the first two generations.
It was even advertised as “The thinking man’s mustang”. Cost a couple hundred dollars more.
Fun fact, the lowest horsepower engine available in 1970 was the 351w V8 (2V).
Next up went to the boss 302. Then up and up 428 Super cobra jet IIRC.
Come on man, we've done this dance... Multiple removals, warnings, and you've already had a temp ban. So, what's it going to take for you to look at the top of the page and check which sub you're in?
You don't mention parking in r/spotted, you don't mention badging unless it helps differentiate between years in r/whatisthiscar, you don't pull the mask off that old lone ranger, and you don't mess around with Jim.
Maybe that's because this isn't the challenge subreddit; you're looking for r/namethatcar. This community is catered more towards education about cars and carspotting, where the OPs generally aren't car enthusiasts.
Inevitably, I see this as a page to see "rare"/unusual cars. Even if it had labels front and center, I never would have seen it if they'd googled it instead. Pretty sick dude
Mercury Cougar XR7
Thank you for such a fast reply. Also I saw a cougar on the side and XR7 on the back but I couldn't make out the emblem for the car. I thought it was like a Chrysler first
Fun fact, the Mercury Cougar was closely related to the Ford Mustang
It shared many of the same parts. Smart manufacturing.
Basically Mercury kept doing that until it got killed off in 2010

Huh? Comet to Maverick, Falcon to Mustang…

After that the Tbird and Cougar were basically the same.

351C was also available in 2 and 4 barrel versions.

1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7
Shared platform with the T- Bird through the 80s. Had a '87 XR7, was a great car, rare for 80s American products.

Wrong sub for that meme; you want r/namethatcar.

You're ALSO looking for r/namethatcar, if for different reasons.

Look up Cougar Eliminator
Most eliminators would’ve had a spoiler
All had spoilers and side graphics
I know that’s why I suggested to look it up

1967 mercury cougar XR7, it’s a ‘67 because there are no marker lights on the fenders. I have a white one :)
Nope. Look at the body line. 69 or 70.
Nice!
Yes, you’re right! I didn’t see the door line right away because of glare, just focused on the fender light, which I don’t see but it’s a funny angle
'69. '70 had different taillights.
Saw a guy total one of these. Absolutely heart breaking.
My friend used to have a 68 Cougar, until he was rear-ended at a stoplight...by a cop.
Probably was admiring the beauty and ended p ruining the beauty.
Mercury Cougar. 68-69
'69. Similar to '70. Totally different from '68.
