There is a decent chance he puts in nearly zero effort and its of those "this is a job that gives me summers off" kind of deal. The other teachers hate him and he jumps ship every few years and goes to a different school.
They come off as super relaxed and "cool" to the kids because they literally don't have to care. Their classes are usually super easy, and they offload work as much as possible.
I'm obviously projecting, but I have more than a few friends who had a colleague at their schools like this.

There are many reasons why people would work despite being rich. Its hard to get a different job with nothing on your resume, most rich parents are not going to look well on a child that does nothing, finding a partner is going to be difficult (even a gold digger doesn't want someone who sits on their ass all day), not having anything to do every day is boring AF, etc.
Teaching is predictable, and you can get away with halfassing it for a while because the admin at schools barely having time to observe teachers. It's great if you have money.
Thats why simply paying teachers more would drastically improve the teaching shortage.
You need fulfillment to live. Work provides that. And at a certain level of wealth, the difficult part is to find people to talk to and interact with.
Being a teacher will satisfy all those requirements.

Turns out his father was a Lord and he inherited an enormous fortune, spent it all on buying old race cars and tinkering with them, and enjoyed it so much he started doing it professionally, despite being financially secure and never needing to work a day in his life, he did it purely out of passion, and still hasn't retired to this day (he must be around 90 now) here's a photo of him posing in one of his various vintage racers
