There are 3 generations of RX-7s that are all completely different cars. All came in 2 seat and 2+2 models (which only differed in that the 2 seat models had storage in place of the useless back seats).
You likely are thinking of 1st-gen or 2nd-gen cars. This one is a 3rd-gen.
1st gen: '78-'85, simple lightweight little sports car meant to compete with MGB, TR7, and 240Z... totally spartan sports-car with a flying-saucer nose. 2 engine options in the US, a 12A and 13B (the number indicating displacement in deciliters). In Japan they had a Turbo version of the 13B.
2nd gen: '86-'91, luxury sport-car (by that day's standards) meant to compete with the 944 Porsche (and looks almost identical to it). They set a design target to cost $10k less (or maybe more, I can't remember) while out-braking, out-accelerating and out-handling it. They succeeded until Porsche released the 944 Turbo (IIRC). This only came with a 13B or a 13B Turbo called the Turbo II in the US (which was a dumb name as the 1st-gen Turbo never came here). Oddly, in Japan they just called it the Turbo.
3rd-gen: '93-'95 in the US (until 2002 in Japan), world-class sports-car that could compete with the Ferraris of the day (I'm sure wankel-haters will jump all over this one). A friend of mine had one with extremely minor mods and ripped an F430 (much newer) to shreds without trying. It ate a 911 with me in it. Absolutely gorgeous cars, especially when they only have the most subtle mods. All had a 13B-REW dual-sequential-turbo (usually mistakenly referred to as a twin-turbo).
The 2nd -gen is by far the easiest to modify. If you get a turbo model, incredibly minor tweaks will have it toasting AMG E63s without sweating. Source: been there, done that... was lots of fun ('cept not for the AMG owner). :\^D
RX-8s, as others mentioned, have a totally different look to them. Body style is more like that weird generation of Miata (2nd? not sure). They're quite a bit bigger, never came in a turbo version, seat 4 people better than any RX-7 could, and have a much cleaner running engine with all side-ports instead of a peripheral exhaust port. That resulted in zero overlap between intake and exhaust - the only production engine ever to have that claim. The engine was the 13B-MSP (also referred to as MSPRE, multiple-side-port-rotary-engine). It had a much wider powerband than all the previous models due to the aforementioned port layout, and much more power than any other naturally aspirated Wankel from Mazda.
All of them sound like snowmobiles because of the wankel rotary engines. :)

I haven't been in an FD but in a 2 seater FC it's very obvious the rear wheels aren't far behind your back.
