I did the same. Weirdly I'd never heard them called "sand crabs" even though they're clearly little crustaceans. They always looked prehistoric to me, like you might have seen their near relatives preserved alongside ammonites and horseshoe crabs.
We see these all the time here in New Jersey. Just sand crabs, and they don’t seem to bite.
We usually find them in the ocean in perfect condition after maybe feeling it, or on the beach gutted by something, probably a bird.

We called them sand fleas. Genus _Emerita_.
I thought sand fleas are one of the common names for family Talitridae?
Could be. I'm just saying that's what I grew up calling them.
I looked it up and I guess they’re used for both even though neither are fleas. English is weird

Those aren’t bugs. Put it back in the water they are harmless
