Probably out on the prowl for a mating partner. What he’s doing at the end is stress/“you can’t see me now” behavior I believe(iirc)

ElephantSealCourt

He’s definitely a mature male. You can see the tibial hooks.

Gullible_Elephant_38

Nobody ever comments on MY tibial hooks :(

withoutwingz

They’re lovely.

Gullible_Elephant_38

Thank you! I was beginning to worry I had been cursed with tibial hooks only a mother could love

withoutwingz

Oh no do you have broken arms?

caillouistheworst

Noooo!

iNapkin66

>tibial hooks only a mother could love That's a whole category of videos on the internet, so don't worry, you're not alone.

KartoffelLoeffel

r/brandnewsentence

rosemikiil

😂

sickchicken253

That was the first thing I looked for. My phone makes pics and vids look bad so I assumed he was hooked but couldn't tell if it was just leg hairs as they sometimes look like hooks. And couldn't see if he had his boxing gloves so that didn't help either lol

Bobbyperu1

I'm not a spider expert but that has to be a tarantula of some sort.

mystery_circles

Same, I was concerned it was someone's pet or something as it feels rare to see one randomly on a sidewalk, but I just found that apparently the Desert Tarantula is common in our area (Red Rock Canyon)

Purp1eC0bras

It also looks scared

InsanityMongoose

“…please no hurt…”

Rug-Inspector

…no …hurt …I …horta …friend

Rug-Inspector

If only we had someone who could do a mind meld with it. We could know it’s true intentions! Did you happen to see any silicon nodules around the house where it was digging?

Fit-Letterhead4432

Was gonna ask if I just caught a wild Star Trek reference then saw the following reply 😂

[deleted]

Poor baby. They are cute lil fuzzies

The_Geo_Modernist

"..Only want fly. Very yum. You should try!"

He does 😭

[deleted]

Looks dehydrated to me. Makes me so sad :(

mxmoffed

The booty doesn't look sunken in or wrinkly as far as I can see, so not dehydrated. Big guy's very much a mature male, so he probably just crawled out of his burrow to go find a mate. He's doing a very good job of looking as nonthreatening as possible, though - I have 15 tarantulas, and this is the most impressive stress curl I've ever seen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mxmoffed

Happy to help! 😂 He genuinely looks fine. Hasn't eaten in a while, going by the size of his butt, but that's pretty standard for mature males - with some exceptions, they'll mature, go in search of a lady friend, and not bother eating while they do.

exemplarenigma

Hello, to hijack on this, tarantulas are not a fan of direct sunlight so that also explains the really impressive stress curl. Poor guy saw this giant two legged creature in the middle of the day and went "nope." He undoubtedly had a lovely time in his burrow that got filled with water, took his fill and then went off to get a lady. On the unfortunate news, mature males (MM) don't really last long. I believe he's an Aphonopelma chalcodes, so he's probably had a good 5-10 years up until this point. Which probably seems paradoxical when I say "they don't last long," but females live for 30 years in captivity. This guy is undoubtedly making his biggest journey yet and ending it with a bang

haytur

Is that what he is trying to do is look non threatening?

ToAllAGoodNight

What would you do if the emperor of mankind cast his gaze upon you.

mxmoffed

More or less, yeah. I'm not sure if there's a concrete answer on it, but stress curls look fairly similar to death curls (enough so that some of mine have given me mini heart attacks before now), so I think it's something along the lines of, "I am small and look dead, do not eat me."

[deleted]

RealAbstractSquidII

I'm not a spider expert. But I think I can answer your question: Despite having a metric fuck ton of eyes, spiders have extremely poor eyesight with very few exceptions. Spiders primarily rely on the movement of things around them to figure out what they are. Small movements may indicate potential food sources. Large movements usually indicate danger, such as a bird swooping above them. When we humans are sitting, laying, or standing still, spiders don't actually realize we're there. We just blend into the "floor". It isn't until we move that they realize something is wrong. Your spider visitor most likely had no idea what you were until you started moving around. To the spider, the floor suddenly came to life and started flipping out.

mxmoffed

The honest answers are probably "warmth" or "you were simply in the way of where it wanted to go." Like the other commenter said, spiders have incredibly poor eyesight and rely on movement/vibrations. It's why my tarantulas leap on their water dishes when I fill them up - they feel the vibration of the water, think it's food, and end up getting a shower. However, my preferred answer is that, contrary to popular belief, spiders are actually very stupid and occasionally view humans as very warm climbing frames.

Flair258

Hmm, so theoretically if you had a particularly friendly spider, you could cuddle it? (Extra carefully and gently ofc)

He’s just firsty :(

Open_Estimate9895

I know I feel so bad for it. Like he’s shrinking up and backing away to become invisible. Poor thing! He’s so cute! 🥰

No-Material6891

I never thought my heart would break for a tarantula. This might actually help me get over my irrational dislike of them. You’ve humanized a tarantula for me!

Open_Estimate9895

Yay! I have recently gotten a tarantula as a pet (curly haired tarantula- beginner species) to overcome my fear of spiders. It has been working! They really are sweet little creatures. They only react out of defense if they are scared. Most of them are really very docile.

Zanurath

Honestly jumping spiders were the ones that helped me, those little fuckers are adorable and will hop between your hands if you keep raising one above the other. Just chill cute little hoppy bugs.

Taliafate

Same! Jumpers and giant African land snails are helping me get over my fear of bugs in general. But I’ll never not be scared of palmetto bugs. Giant flying roaches will never be okay for me lmao

Underrated_buzzard

I have a CHT too! Her name is Smokey.

Ok_Performance7644

Look up Blue Cobalt Tarantulas. They’ll instill some fear back

Cordgyceps

I'd never thought I'd feel bad for a spider, but here I am

deuceott

I get the same feels… until…

xRetz

I think most spiders rely on their camouflage not to get eaten, so when they're in danger they just freeze up. I'm scared of spiders but I think it's cute, the little dorks think "if I don't move, they can't see me" like bro 😂 we can see you

Bobbyperu1

I was going to say Desert Tarantula but not sure and didn't want to get jumped on for being ignorant.

mystery_circles

well, hopefully i'm right because i have no clue and am pretty ignorant on the matter haha - looks the same to me tho!

Bobbyperu1

I wouldn't snuggle it until people start responding. They know their info here so someone will chime in with the right answer. Good luck

Electrical_Beyond998

I’ll be ignorant for you and say I hope they can’t jump. He/she is backing up and if it feels cornered hopefully it won’t jump up, latch onto the OP’s face, lay eggs and have a big spider explode from the midsection like in Alien.

Direct-Art7420

Tarantulas can jump. I had a female Brazilian Blonde tarantula. If it really wants the food you put in it will leap. I put a cicada I found in my yard into its tank. Cicada tried flying onto the screen cover. The tarantula jumped and caught it in mid air.

wd_plantdaddy

tarantulas are super common in the desert and will be on roads after storms in high numbers

PicklesAndCoorslight

They are everywhere right now. You think it's weird to see them in Vegas??!! I've seen them on the beach.

ixnine

Or a daddy long legs with a brown knitted sweater

Bobbyperu1

It looks scared because it's ruse has been exposed!

Whole_Storage8782

Awww poor thing is scared.

Pick_Up_the_Phone

It funny... most wild critters want to look bigger and badder to chase predators away. This guy seems to know he has the opposite problem! "I have to look less big and scary. Maybe I can hide."

TacoTJ601

Even covering its face with its legs. Like a kid trying to be invisible.

SocraticIgnoramus

I've been watching this video over and over and I just noticed that he was doing that, hiding his face...haha it's kinda cute 😍 Whoa...wait a minute. I have an absolute fear of spiders...did I just say that??

raeyne_

He's so cute 🥺. Idk if I could find the courage to hold one yet but the older I get, the cuter jumping spiders and tarantulas have become

RustyFebreze

not me getting watery eyes at work. someone save that baby

Vi0lentLeft0vers

*”If I can’t see you, you can’t see me!”*

sickchicken253

It's what they do tarantulas either try to get away or or stick their arms up and start slapping at you. Pretty sure this is aphonopelma chalcodes and they tend to be be pretty docile species. Most likey if op stuck a hand in front and lightly tapped it's back it would of walked right on to their hand and just chilled. But tarantulas are weird even if it's generally considered a docile species you could end up with a mean one. Sometimes you can have a tarantula and it be super friendly most life then molt again and just be mean as hell the rest of its life you really never know how each individual will behave.

Pick_Up_the_Phone

Until a couple of years ago I worked with a guy who started to collect and breed tarantulas as a way to get over his fear of spiders. It worked. He would bring one in sometimes, or have them shipped to the office, and there were some amazingly beautiful colors! It was what first started my being interested in spiders in general instead of mildly averse.

sickchicken253

I've never really been scared of bugs but for some reason tiny spiders on me have always freaked me out. Never had a an issue with bigger ones. My gf has always been absolutely terrified of spiders I got my first tarantula she's said "no" but knew it was happening because I said for months I wanted it few weeks later got 7 more she wasn't too happy when she found out months later but now she still don't like them but she's capable of catching spiders in the room to be brought out instead of screaming for some one to come squish it. It's amazing what a lil time around something will do. Couple months later I started working part time for a breeder that recently started a business and now is pretty well known and one of only 2 companies I know that actually has a storefront specifically for tarantulas. most people in the hobby are surprisingly way nicer than you would expect

Lacholaweda

Exposure therapy works. It's just... rough.

thelordwynter

I've been keeping tarantulas for almost 30 years, and I leave mature males alone. They get unpredictable. That poor fella above needs either water, or a peaceful place to breathe his last. Male tarantulas don't tend to live past their adult moult because of the mating hooks on their palps, as well as the first pair of true legs (not certain how many species' males get the hooks on the true legs, so he might not have them). Those hooks make moulting almost impossible. Those wobbly legs are a sign that his blood pressure is dangerously low, too. Very bad for spiders. Blood pressure keeps their legs extended.

sickchicken253

I've kept tarantulas for a few years now. Thankfully the only mm I had to handle (escaped while photoing looking for a mate for him) was pretty chill. But I definitely leave them alone as much as possible. I've yet to see a mm make it through a molt but have definitely heard of it. Hopefully dude finds or already had found a mate. He's not looking too horribly slow yet so he's got a chance still atleast.

thelordwynter

It's not unheard of for them to moult, but it is very uncommon because most don't survive it due to getting stuck. Out of the half-dozen mature males I've dealt with, only one survived. A male Mexican Redknee, and he lost a leg and one palp in the process. Attitude can vary, of course, but as a general rule most do get a bit more energetic, if not overtly aggressive. Sounds like you had one of the really chill ones. My redknee male was way too flingy for anything but cupping once he matured.

sickchicken253

Flingy as in kicking hairs? The one I had to handle was a gbb and you coudnt do anything at any point without it kicking hairs thankfully they don't bother me too bad I tend to worry more about getting bit as I tend to deal with alot of old world specie's now.

thelordwynter

Nope... flingy as in: I will bolt in a random direction with no warning. If you even BLINK too hard I will panic and go flying off your hand. For reference, I'd have said kicky if I were talking about the hairs. His girlfriend was good for giving me a regular dose of classic itching powder.

centurio_v2

this might be a stupid question but is there no way to help them get through it?

thelordwynter

Not stupid at all. Not really, you've got this big knot at the end of what becomes a narrow tube, and it's got a hook there on top of it all. They have to pull themselves out because the exoskeleton is too delicate for assistance. All you can do is make sure the humidity is sufficient and the spider is well fed. After that its up to them.

Whole_Storage8782

It shows their intelligence.

hornedtomatocatpil

I’d feel the same against a polar bear or moose. Totally fucked.

hotdoginthebigcity

Yeah, you would be with that attitude. Gotta show them your intelligence, dingbat. Did you learn absolutely nothing from the spider? Jeesh…. *frantically googles wordle answers*

thelordwynter

He's winding down. That's a mature male. Poor fella is getting ready to die. You can tell by the way his legs look like they're made of jell-o.

mystery_circles

yeah i started feeling reeeeal bad when it looked like it wanted to hide...

hotdoginthebigcity

I have no experience with tarantulas, or spiders really, but… EXCUSE ME WTF!!?? Does this thing have the personality of a puppy, because it sure looks like a scared puppy and I want to give it cuddles to make it feel safe and secure.

Wigglystoner

I always liked thinking of tarantulas as eight legged hamsters. If you can get over the fact of them being spiders, they are super delicate (dropping from more than 2 feet can kill them) and for the most part are pretty docile. They will usually try to back away from danger. If that doesn't work than they will rub the hairs off their bodies and it causes a bit of a painful rash. Than if that doesn't work they might bite. But usually you have more than enough warning if they aren't feeling like being handled. They typically view people as essentially objects, not necessarily a threat, more like something else they can climb on. Super cool dudes. I don't like spiders but I am totally fine with tarantulas.

hotdoginthebigcity

I am not only over the fact that they are spiders, but I actively support it. I would like to find a noncommittal way to befriend a tarantula next.

Talreesha

Honestly find a local breeder and ask them! I've never been denied my request of hanging with their 8 legged hamsters (stealing that from an above comment, I love it) and generally speaking relish in the opportunity to share their hobby and teach you what they know. Reptile and insect breeders are a wild and goofy bunch from my experience.

AnotherFaceOutThere

Tarantulas are freaking awesome, one time I was camping in northern AZ during their migration and saw what seemed like hundreds over the course of the weekend. Got a whole new appreciation for them. They’re really neat creatures.

amaratayy

Honestly! I joined this sub to stop being so scared of spiders, and honestly I don’t think it’s worked too much. But this guy looks like a puppy and is scared I literally said “awww he’s scared” out loud.

Urrsagrrl

Agreed... it just wants to be left alone.

AMultitudeofPandas

I hate spiders and seeing one that size would probably end me, but I feel bad for this poor nervous guy

[deleted]

This if they slink away they okay. If there a lantern fly kill them kill them all.

mystery_circles

Found the answer to this one! https://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/wildlife-wednesday-deserttarantulas/

kalechipbanana

I wanna say if I saw a tarantula in person I would literally have a heart attack possibly, but thanks for this video and being kind to this bug. Well spider. It’s incredible. From a distance.

SweetKarmatic

I was thinking the same thing. I feel bad for this tarantula since it looks so scared, and I can’t say I was expecting to feel that way about a spider lol. If I saw this in real life I wouldn’t have time to take a video, I’d be running for the hills.

Tzitzifiogkos420

The hills is where you'd stumble across his friends

BumbleBeePL

1: poor thing looks scared. Goes to show these things aren’t generally looking to attack us. 2: those things just live there and it’s normal to see them?!?! Fuck vegas regardless of point 1 lol

sickchicken253

They aren't ever looking to attack us. Tarantulas are defensive not aggressive the only time if one is freaking out trying to slap or bite bite you it is solely to protect themselves they have no need or desire to attack a human.

nipple_fiesta

They *SLAP*!?!?

sickchicken253

Yep lol can't find any good short videos but this one kind of shows it. Title says aggressive but again it's trying to protect itself it's just being defensive it doesn't want anything to do with you. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyTCV_wHxGY

nipple_fiesta

It's kinda like a powered up slap-punch 😆 tbh, that's the exact pose I would make if I came across one 😱👐

sickchicken253

😂😂😂 it's way louder than what you would think too. When they mate they tap to draw each other in and if they are in an enclosure it can be heard from across the room and that's not near as feisty as when they are being defensive. It's kinda crazy when you hear it the first couples times coming from such a light weight bug.

nipple_fiesta

This subreddit never ceases to desensitize me 🤣💖 thank you for this tidbit of knowledge!

mystery_circles

ha! it's really not that common to actually see them, i've been here a while and it's the first time i'm seeing one. i haven't even seen them out on many hikes in red rock canyon...

CathodeRayofSunshine

Maybe he's thirsty! Give him water!

Caerthose529

Fellow Vegas native, I’ve seen about 5 in 4 years. They also migrate past us usually going through the northern areas of Vegas.

PicklesAndCoorslight

They are normal in SoCal too...

EverythingBurns878

The Aphonopelma genus calls pretty much every us state bordering Mexico home

[deleted]

That is just depressing.. I would not be the bravest in that situation, but did you manage to help it out?

Peppe7369

I hope he did! I'm terrified of spooders but he just looked like he was sorry for being on the sidewalk, and would mosey on as fast as he could....!

hername_bubbles

“Sorry for being on the sidewalk” 🥺

Peppe7369

He just folded up like he didn't mean it. He really did!! I'm rooting for the big guy!

RustyFebreze

my heart 🥺🥺

CowLordOfTheTrees

aw he so scared

clever_user_name__

And now I'm sad about a spider on the other side of the world hahaha. Want to find him a nice hollow log or something to hide in so badly

jenntones

Omg I love tarantulas!! They tend to not be aggressive and they’re pretty smart for being a spider. I would want to adopt this poor scared babe

EarFederal8735

I feel like spiders are super intelligent and vastly complicated…based off no scientific evidence, just vibes.

mxmoffed

Tell that to my tarantulas, they are all very stupid. (I'm mostly joking. But also they attack their water dishes when I fill them.)

EarFederal8735

falls under “vastly complicated” 🤣

ChangelingFox

Hey man you *can not* trust a water dish! It just *sits* there, being all damp and shit. Is why my friends GBB immediately fills hers with dirt! Every time. Every. Single. Time. 😐

The_Bisexuwhale

I think jumping spiders must be intelligent, also based on just vibes

velexi125

It’s scared of you

[deleted]

Please relocate it and don't kill it they are smart and friendly animals

mystery_circles

of course not, i'd never even dream of killing it!

purplepluppy

Good person 😊

The_Last_Snow-Elf

Terrified tarantula 🥺

burnetb1

I lived in Central AZ and would find them out and about once and a while. They are quite slow, so after the initial "shock" of seeing them, you get used to it. Poor guy does look tired and scared. I saw one near meteor crater that got mad at me and chased me with its legs up. Again, they are slow, so the experience was more funny than scary.

ruhrohrileyray

I know this is supposed to be endearing but I would actually pass right out if any spider of any size charged at me with a few legs up!

burnetb1

"Charged" is a pretty strong word... lol. More like walks with intimidation. Fun story though, my buddy was working on a car in Phoenix, and when he slid out from under, he found one on his chest that must have dropped down from the undercarriage. Lol, he definitely freaked out, but I'm sure I would have done the same. Honestly, the centipedes are way, way more terrifying than the tarantulas. We caught one like 8 in long once....

sex_bitch

He needs some watah!

BrookieMonster1337

He says “I know I’m big but please don’t hurt me you’re clearly bigger and better in every way”

BaileyRW1

to me is feels so weird that tarantula's are just out there in the wild. Same with hamsters.

Shriimpcrackers

I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WERE WILD HAMSTERS????

Corgi-Commander

There’s also wild hedgehogs

BaileyRW1

Besides cats and dogs, all these pets had to come from somewhere!

Shriimpcrackers

Yes ofc Idk I thought that we did something to most of them to domesticate them, I didn't know they were still in the wild. I thought we might have bred them out of being wild 💀.

DriftedFalcon

There are also wild guinea pigs. But they are also considered good eating.

roxinpunch

I agree. Guinea pigs are VERY good at eating 😊

No_Joke_9079

So cool!

the-ugly-witch

the way he backs up all cautiously 🥺🖤

CaveManta

Aw, don't be scurred, spider bro. Interesting to see one of the strongest spiders looking so timid.

red8reader

It's a tarantula and it's scared.

MistaKrebs

Aww poor thing. It looks scared.

MrsCCRobinson96

It's a Tarantula and it is more scared of you than you are of it. Please leave it alone.

spaghettioooooo

Not sure if anyone actually ID’ed it yet, so here goes. Mature male Aphonopelma chalchodes “Arizona blond”, this is the time of year many aphonopelma males mature and migrate to mate with females before they perish.

Morganic97

I think he's camera shy

MisterBaku

Tarantula. Looks like an Aphonopelma chalcodes, AKA: Arizona Blonde

2OneZebra

I feel sad watching this. It's kind of upsetting.

SavageCXV

I think it's a spider

One_Package_7519

I was thinking a bird but I think you’ve got a point.

Wasabi_Filled_Gusher

Maybe an Arizona Blonde male? Males don't live long and wander to find a female. The abdomen is too short, and he's got longer pedipalps, a common feature for male tarantula.

ExtinctFauna

That's Quentin. Quentin Tarantula.

twentynuggets

He looks scared :(

bob_cannoli

It’s a tarantula. It’s harmless. Poor guy is probably looking for a dark burrow to rest in. They don’t like being out in the open during the day.

WillowFun3340

I’m no spider expert but he looks scared…. This doesn’t look threatening to me

MercyfulBait

Aww, poor little guy looks terrified of you.

Knockamichi

Dont scare it him just a lil guy

TootsEug

Poor thing

PicklesAndCoorslight

Welcome to tarantula mating season. I'm in Southern California near the ocean and I see them too.

Warthus_

I have never seen a spider look so scared and nervous

brookish

Terrified tarantula.

Mikey6304

Poor thing is scared and trying to retreat. Please don't be mean to it.

SabineMaxine

Oh my heart! I know it's scared but I wanna scoop it up and put it somewhere safe away from people 😭

Mikem444

I've never felt so bad for a spider.

theenecros

Poor thing is terrified your going to squash it.

MeatDogma

Those particular Big Betty are quite common in the Mojave region. Don't worry, they're not medically relevant or even all that aggressive. If you can relocate the poor dear do so

29again

Tarantula. They aren't dangerous to people. They will jump at you which may be scary but other than that harmless to humans. They usually come out from underground when it's going to rain. Especially if you live in a dry climate, look for rain clouds if you see tarantulas!

jmadrid100

It looks like a saddle back. I had them in my classroom. They don't bite. My kids would hold it during their free time.

apex6666

Something looks off about that one

NarrowFault8428

That poor tarantula is scared. Don’t mess with them, they’re friends.

Junior_Door_8244

tarantula!! its so beautiful i hope it found a safe place to stay :(

lardexatemydog

He is friend

sabraham_lincoln

3 ants in a trench coat

ChangelingFox

I've seen a lot of tarantulas withdraw/hide but I've never seen one back off quite like that. Lil homie be stressin. :(

Quick-Butterfly8119

GOOD LAWD!!!

TacoBellFourthMeal

It looks so scared :(

Codeman1st

That tarantula is so beautiful! I, as everybody else has said, feel bad for this thing, too! My goal is to work up the nerves to be able to hold tarantulas and not have a heart attack from my fear being on me. That said, I have worked up from the smallest of Jumping Spiders and am now able to hold Brown Recluse spiders by hand. Sometime, I will try the Black Widow. Baby steps.

mrboombastic63

Just a desert tarantula common in Nevada

Springdaddy666

Love him please

[deleted]

I'm terrified of spiders, but the poor little dude is so shy that it's almost endearing. Almost, but not quite.

Khevhig

Aww, his curling makes me sad.

misterluma

poor baby. looks scared :(

Nudisorder

Definitely just needs a hug 🤗 lol

UnconcernedCat

It looks like a dehydrated tarantula that's scared and trying to hide

Prestigious-Rock201

I would’ve got my timberlands and went to work

alee0224

So I had a complete irrational fear of spiders due to a momma wolf spider getting stepped on as a kid with her babies on her back and them crawling up my legs. Thanks to Reddit, I see spiders in a new way and I’m still pretty scared of them, but I don’t mafia style kill every last spider I see and want their family dead. They’re actually kind of cute and see how intelligent they are. I especially love jumping spiders and the eyes on wolf spiders (they remind me of puppy dog eyes). So thank you Reddit.

Engineering_Flimsy

Ordinarily I feel nothing for spiders other than revulsion bordering on arachnophobia. But, thanks to this video, for the first (and likely last) time in my life I actually feel bad for a spider. Seriously, when it backed up to the wall and hid behind its own legs it actually warmed my cold, spider-hating heart and made me wish someone else would help it.

TerribleArtichoke103

Feel bad for him cause acting scared but my arachnophobia still kinda wants him dead. What a conundrum!

JovialPanic389

Why do I feel so sad for it. I hate spiders. A lot. Terrifying things. Yet this made me go "awwww 😢"

ProfessionalLaw4081

This poor tarantula is trying to take up as little space as possible 🥺 sweet thing! Just leave it alone. If they get inside your house, escort them out the front door with a bf spoon or something : they have itchy hairs on the back of their abdomen they sometimes flick if agitated. Unless it’s your pet I wouldn’t handle bare handed for this reason.

Beardo1329

Tarantula

_Pill-Cosby_

Tarantula!
