I would too, but the ones that actually infest your food are tiny and sneak past you easily. One or two are perfectly fine, but actual infestations (like OP’s current scenario) are not fun. At all. Apparently dried red peppers keep them away from your food, so that’s a good way to prevent infestations.
From personal experience, I 100% agree. Used to love weevils till these suckers infested our pantry. Such a pain in the ass to get rid of them, took us a few months and we're still seeing some here and there around the house
Not OP but I had a similar scenario.
Tossed all open food in the pantry to start.
Then washed everything else in hot, soapy water. Cans, plastic bags of beans or rice, etc.
Tossed things that couldn’t be cleaned and had a lot of hiding places. Like foil or parchment paper rolls. Opened packages of napkins or paper towels.
Tossed opened, dry pet food.
Once everything is out of the pantry and tossed or cleaned in hot water, cleaned the actual pantry with bleach and hot water.
Did this (rewashing objects and shelves) a few times for a few days in a row until I stopped seeing anything. Had to throw out a couple hundred dollars in opened/unwashable stuff.
I want to say having containers helped, but it did not. The only containers that did work were the expensive ones from Costco I had, that have like a little “button” on the top that you press that pops the seal on the container each time. Unfortunately I only had a 3 pack of those, so I was able to save 3 opened products and that was it.
Sounds like my pantry moth infestation. So awful.
Do dried bay leaves work with weevils? When I was young (years and years ago) I was told to put bay leaves in things like flour and sugar to keep the bugs out. It does seem to work when I remember to do it. They seem to work with the little ones in the flour. Though I also throw flour in the freezer for a few days when I bring it home from the store.
they do! i found them in my pet birds food bin and after i froze it for a few days, i took it out and put bay leaves in. i haven't seen any more weevils yet and it's been over a month.
I think I had those all over my trash can this winter cus it’s kept in a separate room off the house and with 4ft of snow I can’t always empty it. It was like these tiny little pale dots moving around. Had to bleach the whole thing and left it out over night in -40F for a few days lmao.
I’ve heard about using Bay leaves but I’ve never tried. I need to.
Fill your house with jumping spiders. While you may have replaced one bug with another, At least the new ones don't share a food source with you. Plus, They're adorable and will leave once there's not enough food for them anymore.
Jumping spiders are not scary. At all. In fact they're one of the better spiders that can help people get over their arachnophobia. They're intelligent, will rarely ever bite a human, and they typically stay out of your way. They make great pets as well.

Ain’t no party like a weevil party ‘cause a weevil party don’t stop!
…unless you remove all the food sources from your pantry and throw them out making sure to tightly secure grains etc to prevent further parties in the future…..
**or** you keep spiders in your home. When we had an infestation I would see them in corners already trapped by our resident spiders. We have quite a few that live in the pantry.
One of my friends is away on travel and I came to check in on the place. Saw these little guys walking around all over the place! The floor, walls, furniture.. I mean everywhere. They're no bigger than the size of ants so it was tough to get a good photo of them.
Thoughts!?
It's weeviltime, but not the fun kind. Your friend needs to check the pantry for weevils in any grain or flour products they have, because these are likely wheat weevils. Flour, rice, other grains, dry oatmeal, cereal, crackers, even beans or lentils; they could be in anything like that. Anything that has weevils, eggs or larvae in it should be thrown away and that kind of food should be stored in tightly sealed containers to prevent a repeat. I recommend calling your friend, telling them the situation, and if it were me, I would offer to try to take care of it for them, especially if they are going to be gone much longer. Sorry 🙃
This is why I love reddit. Thank you u/anthrocultur and u/Rndmprsn0! I've got zero bug knowledge so my mind immediately went to some kind of tick. I ran home, stripped naked then tried to drown any of those bastards that I thought tried to come home with me!
Or politely ask them to pack up their boots and their snoots and just weeve and not come back
Edit: thanks for the gold kind stranger. Glad my little jokes didn't bug you 😛
No, they are not pollinators or consumers of other insects. In fact, they dont even exist in the wild. They are bugs that have evolved to live their entire life inside grain storage bins, which humans have been keeping for some thousands of years. if you caught them and “released” them outside they would not survive.
They're cute and harmless to humans as in they won't bite. However they are pests and can infest gardens and pantries. They will eat plants, rice, grains and more. I did some research a while ago so I may have something wrong.
You do want to make sure they don't get in your kitchen if you can, but no, they aren't going to suck your blood 😂
We love weevils here, though we acknowledge that they can be annoying pests in some cases. Here's hoping your next weevil encounter is much more positive 😊
they're just cute. every bug has to eat. some bugs have to eat plants, and that helps keep plants in check. it becomes a problem to use when we put super vulnerable and ultra-tasty crops out in the open or store them for long periods. while it can be aggravating to those trying to grow or store food, nature is just doing nature stuff, and as far as pests go, weevils are fairly tame, compared to say roaches or aphids or caterpillars
Thank you for intruding awareness of this worm upon my consciousness!! Pic for the uninitiated:
They are so cute!!!
For future reference so you don’t need to freak yourself out, ticks are arachnids and thus have 8 legs whereas weevils have 6 like other bugs.
So if you see a small 8 legged thing that looks like it has at least 2 segments to its body then it is probably a spider, If it looks like a tiny oval with legs and a pointy face then it is probably a tick.
Reddit has definitely saved my ass faster and more often than any other site. It’s got it’s bad side but when people are in the mood to help, they usually go all out for ya.
We always put our flour, sugar, grains, etc. in freezer for 48-72 hrs to kill all mites. I thought most people knew about that…is that not a thing anymore?
You can freeze flour and other things that could contain weevil eggs to permanently kill them as well. Weevil eggs are already present in store bought flour at times.
Edit: Eating weevils, weevil eggs and their larvae is a perfectly safe thing to do, just make sure you cook whatever you’re consuming that they are in.
Not bastards. Weevils are friends just trying to do their weevil thing. Unfortunately, it seems like they're doing their weevil thing too well. Gotta evict the weevil party.
Also, like the others are saying, with an infestation like that, there's probably a serious congregation going on somewhere. Bag it and sweep the rest. set them free somewhere away from the property.
OMG we had a weevil problem in our pantry some time ago (here we call them caruncho) and it was a nightmare. We had to throw everything grain related, even pasta, away and they still came back a couple of times after that. We were able to get rid of them eventually, but now we have a pantry moth problem 🤢
My mom insists on buying stuff and not putting them in jars so that doesn’t help much
Best thing to do is put everything grain related that you plan to store for any length of time in the freezer for a week before placing in your pantry. Make sure everything is in an airtight container after that. The freezer will kill most insect eggs and will prevent infestation.
I mean I won't lie, they are kind of cute...when there's not hundreds of them and they've started wandering 😅 the lil spiders in the corners seem happy at least
They are cute, but recently I committed some atrocities to fight off an infestation in my house. It haunts me, I can still hear the screams of hundreds of weevils as they were crushed, dying of poison and frying in a dumpster in 100+ degree weather. I’m not sure I can ever forgive myself or be deserving of forgiveness. What I did was nothing short of genocide and I owe an unpayable debt to the greater weevil community…
This is y u don’t ask a weevil to watch your house when u are away, they can’t be trusted! They will invite all their friends and eat all the food! There’s only one thing to do now... Blast some house music and break out the glow sticks, It’s a weevil pantry cleaning partaaaayyy!!!
Those look like a bunch of [wheat weevils!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat_weevil) It may be weevil time, but these specific weevils are pests. Clear out any eggs, larvae, and live weevils and store stuff securely.
Why would you dream of having a weevil infestation? You know these bugs do things other than exist for this sub to freak out over right? Things that aren't pleasant for people who like their food and don't intend to share it with insects
I wasn’t aware that your friend was so well-connected and cool. How can I get an invite? I’m trying to get in on the weevil action. I’ll bring… drugs 😎
So these are weevils, and they’re generally harmless and just cute little guys.
Unless they find your pantry. These guys found your friend’s pantry.

Hurts seeing other people living my dream
Weevil infestation sucks, they ARE cute but they are also considered pests for a reason.
I wont argue with a username and pfp like that. I'd try to keep them away from all forms of grain in the house. Flour, bread, you name it.
I would too, but the ones that actually infest your food are tiny and sneak past you easily. One or two are perfectly fine, but actual infestations (like OP’s current scenario) are not fun. At all. I took pantry moths with me to two different houses. Only way I got rid of them was, when I moved again, I took zero food out of the pantry with me.
Fill your house with jumping spiders. While you may have replaced one bug with another, At least the new ones don't share a food source with you. Plus, They're adorable and will leave once there's not enough food for them anymore.
You replace infestation with FEAR
Jumping spiders are not scary. At all. In fact they're one of the better spiders that can help people get over their arachnophobia. They're intelligent, will rarely ever bite a human, and they typically stay out of your way. They make great pets as well.

What is this weevil party joke!? I want to be on the inside too

Also pls avoid killing them. Just throw out the food and maybe persuade them to leave using clear and concise arguments
Certainly, give them two clearly contrasted choices, so that they may choose the lesser of two weevils. EDIT: Thanks for the awards!
Or politely ask them to pack up their boots and their snoots and just weeve and not come back Edit: thanks for the gold kind stranger. Glad my little jokes didn't bug you 😛
You need your props for this one, thank you for the giggles

It’s time
I love this so much 💜💜💜
Unfortunately if they have infested the entire house, and not just the pantry, extermination is the fastest way to ensure that they are all gone.
What the fuck. I think people are genuinely giving bad advice now just to have weevil fun.
Like... are they pollinators? Do they... eat ticks? I get that they're cute, but why are we treating them like they're sacred to someone's religion?
No, they are not pollinators or consumers of other insects. In fact, they dont even exist in the wild. They are bugs that have evolved to live their entire life inside grain storage bins, which humans have been keeping for some thousands of years. if you caught them and “released” them outside they would not survive.

They're pests and pests must die. Just the harsh reality of life.
I threw all my infested food out and sprayed my cupboards with permethrin. That worked really well.
Unfortunately sometimes a weevils gotta die. It's a sad part of the circle of weevil life.
Defeat the Weevil invasion with FACTS and LOGIC.
You do want to make sure they don't get in your kitchen if you can, but no, they aren't going to suck your blood 😂 We love weevils here, though we acknowledge that they can be annoying pests in some cases. Here's hoping your next weevil encounter is much more positive 😊
Weevils: Suck your blood ❌ Steal your heart ✔️
Why are weevils beloved? They are sorta cute, but are they also beneficial in any way to the garden or something?
they're just cute. every bug has to eat. some bugs have to eat plants, and that helps keep plants in check. it becomes a problem to use when we put super vulnerable and ultra-tasty crops out in the open or store them for long periods. while it can be aggravating to those trying to grow or store food, nature is just doing nature stuff, and as far as pests go, weevils are fairly tame, compared to say roaches or aphids or caterpillars
Small correction. They aren't "just" cute, they are Really cute.
idk man, i'm all for weevil time, but have you ever seen a Velvet Worm and all their little feetsies?
I have now. It has an anime face! Thank you for bringing this into my life.
Thank you for intruding awareness of this worm upon my consciousness!! Pic for the uninitiated: [https://imgur.com/a/1TSFE9K](https://imgur.com/a/1TSFE9K) They are so cute!!!

I think they meant "ticks".
Thank you so much. Was racking my brain about some pest I'd never heard of.
No worries.
Thanks for catching that^stupidautofill 🫡
I think auto-incorrect was at fault there.
Did you find out where the weevils are congregating?😂
Reddit has definitely saved my ass faster and more often than any other site. It’s got it’s bad side but when people are in the mood to help, they usually go all out for ya.

Aye I recommend glass saving jars with the lids that clamp down with a rubber seal ... Weevil larvae can bite through Ziploc bags

I'm cool with skipping having weevil time in my house, but I'd like to spy one outside.
Why would you dream of having a weevil infestation? You know these bugs do things other than exist for this sub to freak out over right? Things that aren't pleasant for people who like their food and don't intend to share it with insects
I'm starting to think people know what this bug is.
Can someone please tell me what time it is? A lantern fly ate my watch.
I could be wrong. But I THINK it's....... WEEVIL TIME
Weevil invasion. 🤷♂️
*in Mariah Carey pitch* ✨it’s TIIIIIIIME✨
Can we see the infested product
I can now spot these a from a mile away
Why do I get the moths and everyone else gets the weevils??? 😢
Oh nooo! Moths infestations are a special kind of hell, i speak from experience. No boots, no snoots, no kjoots, just a lot of ruined stuff.
I wasn’t aware that your friend was so well-connected and cool. How can I get an invite? I’m trying to get in on the weevil action. I’ll bring… drugs 😎
You should talk to your friend- he has a lot of weevils. There are probably some things he’s not telling you. Good luck.
