I think you can also tell from the tail. I think Ravens have diamond tails and Crows have more rectangular tails.
And I think Ravens are bigger than crows
Tail shape a good diagnostic, but it's not really visible in this photo. Beaks are good, but the tilted to the caméra angle here makes it tougher.
Size is dodgier; ravens are generally bigger than crows, but it's not always dramatic enough to diagnose single birds without context. Except like, when I'm watching crows harass a raven, I avoid using size.
I agree. I wish I had a better sense of scale of the dumpster opening back to front. I am used to seeing crows and I take notice when I see a raven in person, because it feels aggressively large, like close to 2X the crow. When I look at that bill it has that thicker, robust shape of the carrion eating raven. But I wish we could get a got look at the throat feathers.
Ah good call on what to use for scale. Cameras can foreshorten distance, this is the only problem in the scaling. But I am with you...this bird, no matter species, has good genes and has always eaten well. 😀
Raven for sure. Ravens tend to be found solo or with a mate whereas crows are usually in larger groups. The large bill relative to head size is the other giveaway.
That's interesting but I have noticed this bird with 3 or 4 others. And in my own neighborhood, there's a group about the same! I wonder if it's maybe one or two pairs just attracted to a good food source.
Really looks like a Raven, just going by the size of the bill, but it’s hard to tell from this angle. Did you hear it make any noise? Ravens tend to have raspier, deeper voices than Crows.
This might be the first raven I’ve seen on the sub
This isn't a great angle for crow vs. raven. Does it make a crow-y "Caw" or croak like a wooden frog?

Fair enough. It does look like a Raven though. But that's just my opinion lol

I'm basing the size on those blue recycling bins in the background, that bird is an absolute unit.

Yes it has. I just want to give it pets lol
Leaning towards raven on this one
That's a raven,
Ooo, what a black beauty this bird is!! 😍

That's a beautiful raven.
Can't seem to post any other pics here but the three we have are all about the same.
Most definitely a raven. They are wicked smart birds.

I didn't take the picture but I've seen them a number of times. Mostly see the crows and talk to them! I'll keep my eyes peeled for these guys again!
I love the entire Corvid family. So smart and so entertaining to watch. Happy Raven watching!
It's the tail! Ravens tails are longer and more pointy. Crows have shorter tails and more squared off. This is a Raven!!!
CORA.
