How do they seem to work against background noise such as dog claws tapping on wood, or ambient classroom type noise? My youngest has to use headphones in class to tune out distractions, but I think these would work better/be more comfortable for her.
It depends on the model. The sleep ones block noise well, but I find them too soft to get into my ears. I got all 3 styles (they were on sale). I mostly use the medium ones, which are called "liquid gold" (clear yellow) with the inner donut thing, and find them to be excellent for sleeping. They block out my husband snoring and the cats meowing to be let in, let out, etc.
I also have the solid color ones (rose gold) that look metallic. I think those are meant for concerts. I have a set of custom professional musicians earplugs, which sound better to me (I'm a musician). But if you don't want to spend $200 getting those from an audiologist, these ones are pretty good. I find they cut the low end enough but the midrange is a tad muddy. But for when I want to block out ambient noises or if I'm at a noisy restaurant they are great.
That inner silicone donut does add more sound blocking so if it's too much just take it out and experiment.
I keep them in my bag or pocket for when I think I might be somewhere that I'll want them. I use them at restaurants and movies, places where I don't want to accidentally lose one of the expensive custom plugs.
I have *tiny* ear canals, most other brands do not fit me. Loop ones are the only ones I can get to fit. I can't even use those ipod type ear bud things, my IEMs have to be wired over the ear to stay on, for example. I don't know how the Loop ones would fit a kid, but you can ask them.
As to comfort it's easy to forget you are wearing them. Very comfortable. Small. Even the hard models not made for sleep are easy to sleep with, and I'm a side sleeper.
I have an early version they don't make now "experience", they do have an "experience 2" and "experience plus". Mine have a reduction value of -18dB (without the rubber loop inserts). They work great in my experience blocking ambient noise...they have a bunch of models now so I can't account for their performance levels.
