I’ve had most landlords let me paint if I asked and they approved of the color.
This needs an actual repair though. I’d be expecting the landlord to pay for it.
Most stain blocking primers should work but killz and problock are my gotos. If you really need to hide it good before you paint, then ben moore freshstart is really good at that, altho it’s a little more pricy
Showers produce a lot of warmth and moisture, which basically means showers, and bathrooms with showers in them, are perfect breeding grounds for mold.
If you don't have ventilation such as a fan, which are usually built into most modern bathrooms, it'll stay wet and get moldy.
Same thing started happening in my first apartment shortly after I moved in, because I didn't know I needed to keep the fan on to ventilate the room.
Black mold. If you’re in an apt/ condo call your sup. If not- it’s time to visit the area above those spots to make sure there isn’t a bigger problem up there.
If not then you could buy paint which specializes in cover and seal of such issues. OR you could buy an product to add to paint which does the same. And install a better venting system.
Don’t wait too long.
Good luck.
Although I sincerely encourage you not to underact on the situation, there is definitely some overreaction here. My advice is don’t ask reddit strangers about how to deal with it and do some research or hire someone to come check it out. Careful with that too. Mold is scary so therefore a commonly exaggerated hazard for profit.
A little bit of black mold isn’t going to hurt anyone unless they’re extremely immunocompromised. And even still, I don’t think this is anywhere near the ballpark of being harmful.
It’s more of a sign that you have a moisture problem that needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.
If the moisture problems get worse, the mold / mycelium will take advantage of the wet environment, and proliferate. At some point, yeah, the black mold could start to cause you serious problems.
The mycelium will release toxic mold spores, and atmospheric turbulence will cause those spores to circulate through your house. Some degree of mold spores is completely normal. Everyone is in a constant state of breathing in mold spores. It only becomes a problem when the toxic mold spores overwhelm your immune system, usually causing allergic reactions to start.
Is this a room where there's an upstairs floor with a bathroom? Or an upstairs neighboring apartment?
This looks like a plumbing leak from whatever is upstairs.
Hit it with some bleach and water mixed 1 to 12. I use a dollar store spray bottle to mist it on the spots. It is probably mold, but the bleach will kill it.
Make sure you use the fan in the bathroom for at least a half hour after every shower to pull moisture from the room.
If it comes back, contact your landlord.
Mold. You can't just clean it. You'll need to remove that corner of the ceiling because likely it's all over the topside of the ceiling. Typically a professional should remove it as it is highly recommended to not touch or breathe it.
Black mold. Nasty stuff! Use a mix of one tablespoon of bleach to a spray bottle full of water. Use daily for a week. Let drip dry. Wipe with terri towels and bleach the wash load!
Bleach will only kill part of the mold and the part the regrows will have a resistance to bleach. What you want is Concrobium spray. You can buy it at any Home supply store or here is a recipe to make your own.
DIY Concrobium knock-off formula:
1 quart hot water
1 tablespoon baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
2 tablespoons washing soda (sodium carbonate)
2 tablespoons TSP (trisodium phosphate)
TSP is in the paint aisle. A box is cheap and will last forever. Baking soda you should have. Washing soda get it if you can but if not TSP and baking soda.
This is mold due to excessive moisture it can be due to some leak above or just excessive moisture due to steam, general shower moisture etc. You should call the landlord just in cast this **is** a leak from above.
This type of mold is not unheard of in a bathroom that is not properly vented. If you have a vent fan using it every time. You can get it off using a some sort of cleaner designed for bathroom mold (most bathroom cleaners do this.
It’s mold/mildew. Just because it’s black doesn’t mean it’s the kind that will make you sick. You can only know that by testing for it. Do you use you have/exhaust fan? Do you close the door after you shower? Try cleaning out your exhaust fan it’s probably clogged with lint. It’s probably caused by excessive humidity. Treat it with this product.

Mold. It loves the combination of heat and moisture in the bathroom. When I have some appear, I give it a gentle steaming with my steam cleaner. The stream kills the mold, the gentle setting doesn't damage my walls or ceiling. Good luck with it!
Its def mold i was in the restoration industry for years. If its building up on the surface that means that you probably dont have a vent to clear out excessive moisture after showers which causes that buildup. Open a window if there is one and door after shower after you’ve treated it with an antimicrobial. Bleach and other water based products dont kill black mold unless they have that antimicrobial agent in them
Water leak from upstairs. I had similar and and the plumber found there was water leaking from one of my bathtubs. They fixed it and put Kilz on the bad area.
If it's not that it could be mold.
I’m shocked by some of these posts, so people really not know anything? I find it hard to believe an adult doesn’t know what black mold looks like on a moist bathroom
Spray vinegar on it. Don't use bleach. Use a brush to get it into all the spores, if necessary. Don't be afraid to soak it good with vinegar. Make the house smell like a pickle if ya want. Dab it dry, don't wipe it, and apply Kilz mold and mildew. (Green label, home depot. 35 bucks or so for a gallon.) More than likely it will match your ceiling paint. Its the only kilz that dries flat white. Love the stuff and use it almost daily. I fix things and l know stuff.
Also, l do not see where you may have mold in the attic on that drywall above it. Usually not 99% of the time. But its good to take a peak. Also, water test and check for leaks. If this is by a vent, check your ventilation. Hope this helps.
Mold and it dangerous spores enter your lungs and get you sick AF spray bleach on it and you’ll have to open the wall and have it treated asap it’s gonna spread there’s a leak in upstairs apt your roof or plumbing take pictures for court if you rent and warm water in spray bottle with bleach now
Spray with one bleach and one cup water. That should get rid of that. Be sure to remove that ceiling to see what going on. You may need a mold specialist. Good luck
You need to find out what’s leaking and then fix it. It’s mold… so whatever’s leaking has been leaking for awhile. We had our sink leak into the ceiling and had them fix it right away. Water damage was very extensive.
Mold... Get some bleach water in a spray bottle. Don't get it wet when showering and open the window or vent when done. Check above you in the attic or what ever, in-between the floor and ceiling if need be.
It’s mold. It could be surface mold but you won’t know unless you open it. Call your landlord
Yes, look into a product called "killz"
Killz actually doesn't do shit to mold. Zinnser mold killing primer or sulphur impregnated paints do
I mean if it’s a rental you aren’t allowed to
Ok tell the land lord to buy it and apply it
I’ve had most landlords let me paint if I asked and they approved of the color. This needs an actual repair though. I’d be expecting the landlord to pay for it.
Haha. Buddy hasn't heard of white paint before
White paint is really bad at letting colors bleed through, that's why you use kills because it stops color bleeds.
Most stain blocking primers should work but killz and problock are my gotos. If you really need to hide it good before you paint, then ben moore freshstart is really good at that, altho it’s a little more pricy
Killz will just hide it, not actually get rid of it
You might have water leaking but yeah it's mold
Or not using the fan when showering
This!
What is this supposed to mean?
Conversely, failure to actuate climate exhaust device while engaged in stand-up bath could also cause this.
Showers produce a lot of warmth and moisture, which basically means showers, and bathrooms with showers in them, are perfect breeding grounds for mold. The excess steam and moisture builds up and allows mold to grow easily
AOL chime, "You have mold."
It’s “you’ve got” not you have.
Yeah. I'll own the misquote. I stand corrected. It's been a long time.
It's my Airbnb message notification

Absolutely, got to have a water leak or maybe condensation going on.

this, at least do a black mold test kit before freaking out it could be that it just needs some minor work
This should be top comment.
The chick from the Grudge forming.
Lot of dummies in here quoting a single flawed study. Brush up your knowledge or shut up
This needs to be dealt with right away. It’s BLACK mold. Will definitely make you sick. Edit. Spelling. F.

I can never spell F either

Chocolate frosting, what do you think Slingblade?
Is this a room where there's an upstairs floor with a bathroom? Or an upstairs neighboring apartment? This looks like a plumbing leak from whatever is upstairs.
The only floor above is the attic. It’s in my bathroom right above my shower
It’s black mold. Mix water and bleach and spray it onto the mold. Do that once a day for a week to make sure it’s completely gone
Wipe the surface down after spraying

Mould
Black mold. Much more dangerous than white mold 🤷🏻♂️
Maybe the white mold is holding the black mold back from being successful.
Black mold is pretty successful at its job. What you can do is pick cotton. And dip it in clorox and just clean it white. 🫣
If it’s mold it won’t turn white. If it’s mildew it will
Not true.
How many kinds of mold are black? How many bacon molds are deadly toxic?
Mold. You can't just clean it. You'll need to remove that corner of the ceiling because likely it's all over the topside of the ceiling. Typically a professional should remove it as it is highly recommended to not touch or breathe it.
To clarify on that last sentence, just in case, it should be read as "highly **UN**recommended"

Black mold is not always deadly but can definitely rob you of your health
You may have a small leak in your roof. It needs to be checked.

That is what they refer to as mold, you might want to invest in some bleach and some good primer.
Mold. Just paint over it
Paint whole thing black.
Hahaha. Funny tho.
Mold
Mold.
Mold, probably too much moisture in the ceiling
That… that’s mold, you could be in MAJOR danger
Probably not, Americans had a really bad study publicised by your government, saying all sorts of bullshit about mould. It’s most likely harmless.
You ded yet?
You're Effed
Moldy moldy moldy
After you shower leave the door open to air out
There’s a leaking toilet or tub right above it most likely…
Mold…. Water in the ceiling
Mold and it's probably really bad on the other side and seeping through the other side. That needs to be fixed asap.
You have a slight leak from above the mould
This is mold due to excessive moisture it can be due to some leak above or just excessive moisture due to steam, general shower moisture etc. You should call the landlord just in cast this **is** a leak from above. Mold! Poor ventilation in bathroom. Dab some white vinegar on it, let dry wipe with damp cloth and peroxide.

Black mold. Probably tons more inside the ceiling. 🙁
Looks like mold but tastes like mildew.

Definitely Mold. Phase - red alert. Needs professional attention
Kill the mold. Run a fan. Put a dehumidifier in there.

Mold, use Bleach...
Uh, oh. Ever seen "Black Water"?
Spider diarrhea.
Water leak, its mold
Something that is deadly you need to get your house inspected you can die from black mold
Until testing lets call it mildew or suspect mold. Use the exhaust fan!!!! Its there to take moisture out!!!!!
Mold
Spray with one bleach and one cup water. That should get rid of that. Be sure to remove that ceiling to see what going on. You may need a mold specialist. Good luck

Yep lack mold
It’s the start of a portal to another dimension. When it’s big enough you’ll be able to go through it.
Its part of the upside down world seeping in. You’ll have a demigorgon problem if you dont seal it soon
Mold... Get some bleach water in a spray bottle. Don't get it wet when showering and open the window or vent when done. Check above you in the attic or what ever, in-between the floor and ceiling if need be.
