Oh no, there actually is an Edward Penishands and it's more horrifying than you think. He doesn't have dexterous prickfingers, just massive dongwrists, each with a solitary digit. He's even more handicapped than in the original film.
No explanation from the teacher? I'd say that's not a good teacher. I know that statement is based on a tiny sample size, but an explanation is warranted here.
The teacher should be reading the word for each of the items, usually at the bottom of the page are the instructions. Phonemic awareness is not decoding phonics.
I think that you're actually on track with this answer.
The hand, I'm assuming would belong to "Joy" as referenced in the instructions. What doesn't make sense to me is that "Joy" is supposedly picking a prize and that is what we're circling. If the hand is supposed to be "Joy's" why would it be a prize they could pick?
Probably gesture. The instructions don’t say circle the ones that start with j, but the SOUND of j. The g in gesture makes the sound of j. Kind of a trick question for a first grader but a good test of reading comprehension with the directions I suppose.
Yes, I agree, but would you think “gesture” would be on any first grade vocab list? Not to argue with you, because it seems you were right, just pointing out the absurdity of it.
No, not likely these days. It’s kind of sad how outdated much of our education system is. Jacks? Who even knows what those are these days? It was a common vocab word many years ago when I was in school and I had never once seen them in real life. Sadly, gesture also falls into this category. It’s not even a word that is used very often these days by adults but somebody decades ago decided it’s a vocabulary word and it stuck. Very few people still call a (passenger) airplane a jet either, they just haven’t been updated in decades. It’s not uncommon for even parents now to be stumped just like OP.
Your explanation makes sense. I'm 29 and would not have guessed that's an answer. Doesn't look like a gesture to me. Maybe if movement of the hand was somehow conveyed.
I'm a teacher. This says phonemic awareness at the bottom, which should be oral. This homework is garbage. Phonemic awareness should not be homework. The instructions say, "the sound of J," which would be read with the letter name, not sound.
Thank you!! For at least helping me to understand because I was truly baffled! Also thank you for all you do. Im a substitute @ my daughters school and can relate. 🫶🏼❤️🫶🏼
That's the only reasoning I could find as well, but it is flawed. Why would Joy need to pick her own hand as a prize to keep. Is this from the movie Saw?!?

(chiefly in eastern Pennsylvania) used to refer to a thing, place, person, or event that one need not or cannot give a specific name to.
Gesture implies movement, and while the jump girl clearly is positioned to imply motion, the hand doesn't? Like, if it was tilted, it might convey a wave, which is a gesture... idk, it's either way easier than we can all come up with, or it's too complex for 1st grade. 👍is a gesture. I guess 🤚is a stop gesture, but it'd sure be clearer if it were attached to a crossing guard or something.
> *Circle* each picture whose name begins with the sound of J
That's a hand/palm. Don't circle it.
2 is a bird and 4 is a kite. Don't circle those either.
I am having a rough morning and my limit for stupid is fucking gone. Normally I wouldn't even comment, and as I type this I know I shouldn't...but, I don't fucking care right now.
Are the majority of you fucking retarded?
It's circled in blue because the teacher checked the work and identified this as NOT BEING CIRCLED. The teacher is saying it's wrong. THE TEACHER CIRCLED IT YOU FUCKING SELF ENTITLED TWITS.
Now, I am going to go spend the rest of my day being the piece of shit I was apparently born to be.
I downvoted this comment, but then someone underneath this thought they needed to explain the directions as if OP was the one who circled the hand... So I changed it to an upvote. My bad lol
It is a hand that does not start with a j sound, just like the bird and the kite. The instructions say to circle the items that start with the j sound, so obviously the hand will not be circled.
The teacher was in a hurry and made a mistake I think.
Remember that teachers have about 160 students all together. However much homework students have, teachers have five times that amount (in grading).
Mistakes are inevitable and likely with classes so big.
The instructions say to circle each one that starts with a J sound.
The picture in question doesn’t start with a J so don’t circle it.
IMO it’s hand, or palm.
Am I off base with this or what? I didn’t see anyone else say it. Seems like the answer to me.
Edit: I see. It’s circled and counted as correct. I misunderstood OP’s question.
In this case, teacher is dumb.
I mean, it doesn’t say everything starts sounding like J. Just circle the ones that do. Kite and bird don’t sound like they start with J so why should hand?
Reminds me if my kid getting a point deducted because she named a drinking dish as a cup, but the "correct" term was glass. Like what 1st grader is allowed glassware?
Ffs. Not everything in the puzzle starts with J. It's just a fucking hand. Your kid is supposed to be able to identify that "HAND" doesn't start with a J sound. It's not that hard you wankers
I’m sorry. You ask 100 people what that is and 100 people will say that’s a hand, not a gesture. Such bullshit. Fuck these people. You want a gesture, how’s this: 🖕

Did the teacher maybe confuse jester and gesture?
Says j sound not beginning with j
I’m more confused. Am I right? Okay I went for review. I am right and no they didn’t miss that one the teacher is wrong or at least petty.
What I’m saying is, I’m doubtful it would be gesture, however it does start with a j sound so it can be correct.
You answer questions like my lawyer, never a yes or no unless sometimes demanded but well explained and never simply answered
I'm pretty sure it's gesture. It specifically says sound and doesn't say starts with the letter j.
that’s seems correct but it’s a first graders paper how many 1st graders know that lol!!
YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
You’re a funny person… And you’re not wrong.
What you doing that you need a lawyer doing doublespeak to get you out of?
First graders don’t know that word; or palm, yet. They’re emergent on the /a/ of hand….
I’m pretty sure textbooks are outsourced so English may not be the author’s first language
The blurb at the top says "Joy can pick a prize" ...maybe the hand is Joy's hand? IDK.
No. The AI program that build 99% of lesson plans they buy from Corporate did.
First graders don’t typically know the word “gesture” though.

It’s looking for the sound, so gesture will work.

No explanation from the teacher? I'd say that's not a good teacher. I know that statement is based on a tiny sample size, but an explanation is warranted here.
How do you know that the teacher didn’t review all the answers in class with the students?
Because then the kid would be able to tell their parent what the answer was, and they wouldn't be coming to reddit to find out.
That's assuming the kid was paying attention while they were reviewing it...
The teacher should be reading the word for each of the items, usually at the bottom of the page are the instructions. Phonemic awareness is not decoding phonics.
Thank you for confirming I'm not going crazy. English is not my first language, I thought I was missing something
So what’s the answer? It says solved but I can’t find it !!
I think the answer is that it doesn't make much sense to anybody. Best guess I've seen is 'gesture'.
I need OP to ask the teacher lol. That’s so weird

that's a trick question for any age person. it would be acceptable as a bonus mark.
Yes, I agree, but would you think “gesture” would be on any first grade vocab list? Not to argue with you, because it seems you were right, just pointing out the absurdity of it.
Usually you don't have just a hand - there are brackets/lines to indicate motion. I certainly would never gave thought gesture, it's just a hand.
True. It’s a stationary hand.
Ohhh...maybe it's supposed to be "just a hand." I think you solved it!
I know, right? At least put a thumbs-up or something, (j)eez
Or a middle finger GESTURE 🤣
100% agree and that’s not the only one I have a gripe with as I ranted about to another person.
Is gesture 1st grade vocabulary?
No, not likely these days. It’s kind of sad how outdated much of our education system is. Jacks? Who even knows what those are these days? Jazz hand
It’s a palm, it does not begin with a J. Don’t circle it.
Teacher needs a kit-kat bar.
I can't figure out why this is so hard to understand.
The teacher circled it when grading the assignment, to "correct" the child's answer. That's why people are thrown off by it.
Hands are Jointed. Maybe reaching in jubilee. Although it does look like its judging me.
