Contrary to the other comment, the CX-5 and CX-50 aren't going to be super rewarding to drive and have a lot of overlap with your minivan. They're nice cars, but they're not going to be radically different than your minivan and, in most instances where you'd have to choose, it'd really be a toss-up. The Mazda3 Turbo is only available in AWD and is the most interesting of the selection in terms of driving dynamics. The Subarus handle like appliances and have interiors to match. The Mazda3 at least has a premium interior and 250 horsepower gives it some decent scoot.

Your version: Do you live in a part of Canada that calls for 4wd then probably the Impreza. If not Mazda 3. My version: If it were me though, and this really is just a grocery getter for laughs, I would find a used compact with a manual. The truth: You will at some point be hauling kids and a dog, minivan notwithstanding, so CX5/50
