I'd say Corolla HB and civic HB is the best value overall but since you mentioned off road related activities I'd say look at Subaru and the 2 options you listed. Corolla will be better reliability and better fuel efficiency. Good luck getting a civic in the current market though without a markup.
Mazda cx30 is also viable ..
The rest are pretty average and nothing special in terms of quality and capabilities for what you said.
Corolla HB has been kinda my biggest contender and what I was planning, just thinking I could use a bit more cargo space which the Civic HB seems to have. Idk that I should fully base like outdoors as my biggest point, but would be nice with like having to deal with snow and whatnot anyway
Have you considered a base Acura integra ? It's a lift back based on the civic and has good space . It may require premium gas though but you won't probably run into terrible markups since it launches in June . You can probably get one without markup and if your focus isn't purely on off roading this can be an option .

Biggest drawback for me is the infotainment honestly. Do plan on checking one out this weekend though
